What do you do? THis is a very likely scenario.
Assuming Steven Jackson is gone.

Kevin Jones
Vernon Carey
Shawn Andrews

My vote is to take Kevin Jones. Impact player who will make a scoring impact on this team immediatley.

I don't know, I would like any of them, but I would prefer Shawn Andrews among the three, only because BP is around, to shape him up if he goes fat again.

I personally would prefer trade down and pick extra picks if they dont pick Shawn Andrews, and maybe pick up Chris Perry instead. Maybe its because I saw him more, I just feel that Perry would be more of an impact initially then Jones.

Oh you mean like he shaped up Larry Allen...

No thanks.

I'll take Kevin Jones.

I would be shocked if Andrews is still there at 22 since the draft is so weak for OL. With as many need areas as we have I think we should trade down and get extra picks. It increases the chances of getting the 3 starters that JJ & BP are hoping for. :D

First and foremost, who's the higher rated player on the Cowboys Draft Board? It also depends on how they veiw Jones and Andrews compared to the other players at their respective positions. Supposedly this is a very thin draft class of OTs who can come in and immediately help. While there's a drop-off in talent at RB after Jones, there appears to be better depth at RB than OT. I'd probably go with Andrews assuming Parcells is comfortable he'll be able to manage Andrews' weight.

I think both Andrews and Jones both warrant a 22 pick. I don't think Carey does. I thought it was interesting that Kirwan I believe say that a lot of teams have Carey as a mid second round pick and most have Smiley as the higher rated player. Jones is definately the sexier pick, but Andrews may be the smarter because running back depth seems deeper than right tackle in the draft. I would still prefer Jones though just because I like sexier things :)

I'd go with Shawn Andrews. Our Offensive Line needs help right now and he'd be a key peice to the puzzle. We can always take a RB in the 2nd round. You could look at a Chris Perry maybe falling to our 2nd pick. You'll also have Greg Jones there who I think could excel in Parcells style of running. To name a few others .. Tatum Bell and Julius Jones.

I'd say go O-line in the first unless Jackson is there.

That's my big concern with Andrews. I don't want to see another Aron Gibson type deal and watch the guy eat himself out of the league. Maybe if were to be there at #2 but that #1 pick is a must hit kind of pick and I think K. Jones is more of a can't miss than Andrews for that reason alone.

Out of those 3, KJ.

with the larry allen situation going on i'd say the safest pick is jevin jones because if those guys dont want to workout tuna will release there a$$ and it will be a wasted pick ex: hugh douglas , derek ross, larry allen talent doesn't mean sh!t to him

Absolutely correct on the draft board point. All this depends on the eye of the beholder - in this case, the Cowboys. Not to mention all the things we aren't privy to in terms of workout, character, medical, etc. And there is quite a bit, I'm sure, we don't know about these prospects.

That said, if Jones is there, I'd grab him and be extremely happy about it. Big if though.

A point on Shawn Andrews we might want to think about. He's obviously a legit first round prospect, but remember: Bill Parcells does not like dealing with fat players. In fact, it's a major sticking point with him. This is a coach who stresses weight training and conditioning as much as any coach in the league. He's almost fanatical about it.

For that reason, I just don't see us being too terribly into a guy who has known weight issues. Besides, I believe he will be off the board before Dallas is on the clock anyway.

Gibson started 16 games last year, and I read recently he has lost a lot of weight. Not that he tore up the league or anything, the Bears did bring Tait in, and I heard Gibson was part of the aborted deal to get Ogunleye from Miami.

But he's proof even a brontosaurus can wake up.

Nope, Tuna doesn't like fat guys, but he will not shy from drafting players with tendencies to balloon if they are guys he can motivate/terrorize. Ryan Young always had to battle his weight. Jason Ferguson too. Tuna managed to keep them in line. It's the fat guys with bad attitudes he can't deal with.

Andrews is much too exciting a prospect to pass up because of a weight issue that doesn't seem to be coupled with a lazy arse attitude . I'd expect Bill to weigh him by the hour, and for the kid to respond as favorably as Troy Hambrick did last year.

Shawn Andrews. He'd be the best available out of those three.

O-Line first in the first, RB in the second. I prefer Carey because he could play G or T, as stated b4 G. Jones is my 1st choice of back, if he is cleared by our doctors.

I go Kevin Jones in a hearbeat. He's the most impact player IMO from those 3. We need a rb badly. I like Andrews too but i'm sure he won't be there, but if KJ and him are there, KJ by far is my pick.

Rocco
04-23-2004, 04:41 PM
You gotta go KJ. Sure we need help on the o-line, but that can be had in later rounds too. The ratio of great late round o-line players to great late round backs definitely says take the back in the first and take your chances with the o-line after round 1. Substitute say a Perry for Andrews in this same scenario, then I'd say take the value at 22 and pick Andrews. If KJ or Jackson isn't available tho, I hope we go CB, DT, DE or maybe even WR depending on what's available..

As much as i'd like a RB. I'd take Andrews if he was there. I think he'll be a mainstay of an O-line for 12 years if he keeps his weight in check.

shawn andrews without a doubt will improve our running and passing game

instantly. Henson will hit the field quicker if we take andrews, jmo.

he can pass block alot better than people think

But not Andrews or Carey.

In the past 15 years the Cowboys have been fortunate to have two of the best O-linemen to play the game in Larry Allen and Erik Williams. I wouldn't take either of those guys over the big three: Emmitt, Troy, or Michael. The skill position guys are just way more important. So there is no way I would take Andrews or Carey over Kevin Jones. Jones is going to be a heck of a player and hopefully he will be for the Cowboys.

if all three are there you trade down and get an extra pick and get one a little later, making sure of course that no one in between takes one we want.
