And while there has been an outpouring of support for the U.S. troops from athletes in all sports, no other high-profile professional athlete has followed Tillman's selfless example. In fact, former Cardinals teammate Simeon Rice, now a member of the Super Bowl champion-Tampa Bay Buccaneers, disparaged Tillman in an interview on Jim Rome's radio show last month.

Pat Tillman has been alone among today's professional athletes at the highest level, giving up his career to serve his country.
"He really wasn't that good, not really," Rice said. "He was good enough to play in Arizona, [but] that's just like the XFL."

After several more promptings from Rome, Rice allowed, "I think it's very admirable, actually. You've got to give kudos to a guy like that because he did it for his own reasons. Maybe it's the Rambo movies, maybe it's Sylvester Stallone, Rocky, whatever compels him."

I listened to that program. Rome was shocked that Rice would say stuff like that.

Rome is having a tribute show to Tillman today. It's very good. Chad Hennings was just on and talked about what it's like to be in harm's way in the Middle East and also play in the NFL. Hennings was a great interview.

This is so tragic.

I almost hit a tree when I heard him make those comments, I was furious. One thing for him to not want to go, another for him to trash the guy.

I can only imagine what Rice is thinking now...

I think you give him too much credit. It is apparent that he doesn't have the capability to think!

it was one thing to disagree with his decision, it was another to put him down for it.

What you do in life always comes back to you. Today many remember Tillman as a hero and Rice as an idiot.

Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony.

Amen to that. Rice is a classless moron and will always be remembered as one.

Simeon Rice is living proof of the old saying....
"It is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and erase all doubt."

When you take into account where this came from, does it really surprise you?

I hope Simeon Rice has a change of heart and takes back his words. I won't hold it against him, because you can predict what will happen in the future. I bet Rice is feeling bad right now, he's only human. I'm not saying to forget what he once said, but i'm sure he by no means wanted him dead.

Pat Tillman embodied what this country used to be about. In WWII athletes and celeberties joined the armed forces out of a sense of duty. Now some of these guys are ungrateful for what they have. Simian Rice is not worthy to be mentioned in the same breath with Tillman.

Simi Can sure sack the Qb, but if you hear his quotes, they are true master pieces, that make you go *** was he trying to say.

I mean you want to go Samuel Jackson on him and say "English MF, English MF".

Anyway, he obviously now proved himself to be idiot. Whatever reasons, Tillman had for doing it, he did it because he wanted to. He might have been bit strange in turning down money and all, but you got to admire a man, who pursues things that he believes in no matter what. He is indeed a true hero, Pat Tillman that is.

rice isnt alone in his opinion though. when tillman joined the army, a bunch of writers said he wasn't a very good football player. and of course no one will say that know. i've got nothing but respect for tillman. i think it was a great thing he did. R.I.P.

Rice can say what he wants, he is entitled to his own opinion, as am I. With that in mind, IMO Rice is lower than a flea on dead goats balls...

Partly true. I.e. Tillman wasn't going to be a Pro-bowler anytime in his Life Probably. But he was a sollid starter at the very least. He was an NFL player and was offered decent contract for a decent Starter money.

Its one thing to disparage his playing skills but another to disparage his motive for doing what he did, IMO. Not that you are saying anything different.
