Thoughts on Office 2007?

I'm possibly going to upgrade to it in the next few weeks, because, I can get it for pretty cheap.

I'm using Windows XP. Doubt I'll go up to Vista for awhile, but I don't mind upgrading Office.

I didn't like it. The new menus made it hard to find simple functions like a sort or highlighting.

If you do install it don't uninstall it. I had to reload my system at work because of it.

I think 2000 is good enough for whatever you want to use it for.

Office, IMO, only adds a few things here and there when they give a new release but in the end it is still the same basic program with just a few bells and whistles added.

Then again I got used to the 95 or 98 one and it took some time to get used to the 2000 one. So I am comfortable with it and do not feel the need to upgrade.

It does what I need it to do even if it is just for limited uses.

Just so you know, Office 2007 (in classic Microsoft fashion) saves files in a new proprietary XML format (.docx for Word files, for example) that's not backward-compatible with previous versions unless you do a "save as" in the old format, or unless the person trying to open it in an older version has already installed Microsoft's "Compatibility Pack."

If they have a Mac, they can forget opening the new format files unless they have Office 2004 (and even then the converter's still in beta testing and buggy as far as I know), or wait until Mac Office 2008 comes out. Or, if they have Apple iWork, they can open the files, but some of the formatting doesn't work right.

I get Word/Excel files from a lot of different sources every day at work, and it's already a headache.

A coworker of mine blew up one of boss' access databases by opening with 2007. :muttley:
