View Full Version : Is the Patriots season a sham???

Talking to some folks who are fans of other teams, this thought came up.
Looking at what has been happening, and given the leagues penchant for loving the Patriots we got to talking about the league trying to give back some credibility to the Patriots and their championships.
The first thing mentioned was obviously the blatant cheating by Belichick. Looking at the punishment VS. the act, it really doesn't seem like it was fair. The Patriots cheated to gain an unfair advantage over their opponents, yet they were fined dollars, but nothing to offset the the on field advantage. IE: suspensions (Belichick).
The double standard was pronounced in light of the 5 game suspension for Wade Wilson who did nothing to gain a competitive advantage on the field. As a matter of fact, it was a personal health matter.
In addition, we see an abnormal amount of non calls against NE during their games. This is not to say that they would lose these games, but you just don't see the calls against them, especially in critical situations. They are in the top 10 in fewest penalties with 37 called.
In addition they also are in the top 3 on 4th down attempts with 12. The other 2 are the Jags and Saints who have been playing from behind all year. This also tells me that they are trying to run up the scores on most teams when as we know they have led in all of their games the entire time except for the game against Dallas.
All of this points to, in some people's minds that there is a league focus on giving the pats all the room in the world to operate and not holding them to the same standards that other teams must be held to.
The running up of the scores is also, something that is an on field thing and if the Defense can't stop them, well then that's just the way it is. But with everything thing we have seen, with all the scoring and Brady having the kind of year he is having, nearly setting records at the half way point, it just makes you think that maybe, just maybe something is really wrong here.
They are the leading scoring team in the NFL. The second place team, Dallas is over 100 points behind them. Given, they have played one more game, but still, 100 points?
Maybe the league is trying to send a message that the Super Bowls the pats won are legit in wake of the cheating. Maybe the Pats just want to run the noses of the rest of the league in their own cheating scandal. I don't know, but the lack of punishment where they receive no on field punishment for their on field advantage and their blatant double standard makes one wonder what is going on.
Oh and the draft picks they are supposed to lose? A first rounder if they make the playoffs? They also have the 49ers first round pick this year, which looks like a top 5 pick. Some punishment huh?
EDIT: Sorry, I posted this in the wrong forum. My bad.

FWIW-I saw just as many calls that went against them just as they did against us.(i.e. a block in the back on Tyson's long KR, Witten's PF on Rodney that kept a TD drive alive, and no, I didn't see any "holding" calls on either side not seen by the refs)

I think running up the score is just a team thing, not a league thing. However, you cannot watch their games and conclude that they don't get special treatment from the refs unless you are a moron.
They don't even get called for blatant fouls most of the time.
This is comical -
Michael Irvin did more pushing off than any Wide Receiver that played this game.
Maybe the Pats are crushing NFL teams week after week. I believe we were the only team that had a lead on them in second half.
They are blowing teams out, no conspiracy - lol

My dad is a Colts fan an he's always said this about the Pats. Now that I look, I see it in all of their games....not just ours. That Randy Moss push off on the Redskins was as obvious as it gets.
Pay more attention to their games and I promise you will see more. We are naturally biased when it comes to our Cowboys, so make sure you look at other teams.
Everyone is starting to hate these guys!

I know you are a closet pats fan but :D ...
When Irvin was doing this, it wasn't as stringent as it is now. There was more leeway given. But then they made the rule more applicable because of Irvin, hence the Michael Irvin rule.
You cannot dispute the disparage of points, penalties and preference this team gets. The thing that is comical is that some people can't see it.

I'm not a Pats fan, but nonetheless, I find it funny how Bill Polian went on for years crying sour grapes at the officiating when his team played the Pats, but he's been awefully quiet over this "Spygate" incident. Really-there's been speculation that Belichick put cameras in goalposts to record Manning's audibles, so where's Polian's outrage?

Why is it considered "crying" when you state the obvious?
And it's not Cowboy fans, As I said, I talked to fans of other teams about this. Redskins fans, (Before their game) Titans fans, Eagle Fans and Charger Fans.
Especially the charger fans. They have seen it first hand for a few years.

Yes he did but didn't the rules change because Belicheck complained how corners were putting their hands on the recievers or something like that?. I have to call and get clarification but it was either Belicheck or Dungy that complained to get the rule changes. It just doesn't seem like Dungy.
Bottom line is that the rules have changed since Mike played.

Well that's a new one. But it's funny no one who defends the pats addresses the double standard the league has shown. No on field punishment. No suspensions. Nothing. And no one finds that odd?
Randy Moss is a total freak - he has made a career of going up and getting the ball. That Brady has 30 TD's and only 2 picks is because NFL, officials, ESPN, East Coast syndicates are fixing play on the field!
Seriously - get a grip in 1990's these same powers that be were in our corner.
Or maybe great teams win lots of games. The whining and conspiracy taunts are comical.

Actually-you may be confused with the Erik Williams rule-where OLs could no longer block defenders by putting their hands under their chinstraps.
As for receivers being able to be physical and even push off a little bit, it was never legal. DBs were able to a bit, but never the receivers. Somehow, Irvin was pretty elusive about it.

The 90's Cowboys did not dominate like this, nor has any other team. Also, if you don't think there is a double standard, address the suspension issue or the punishment issue for the cheating.

Nah...it was between NE and Indy.....Ty Law rule fits the bill (thanks cajun). I just don't think Mike could get away with it these days. He did push off...a lot.
Sure the league is gonna protect it's product but right now. The Pats are pissing everyone off with their behavior....every week.
The only major problem I have with the NFL is the Rodney Harrison/Wade Wilson thing......there is no explanation there!

It was in fact Dungy. People have short memories. The Colts are the biggest whiners in the league. They only stopped last year when they won. Now, they can do no wrong. If they lose, just listen.

I'm not whining but you guys ARE acting like bullies. I agree with Charles Barkley, if you were up by 40 late in the 4th and still trying to score TD's.....I'm taking somebody out. Somebody might do that and I don't want to hear any whining if it does happen. Karma is real.
We could not be stopped in the early '90s but we didn't go around the league pushing people around to show our manhood. We just won and moved on.

Dungy and Polian. Polian in fact was overheard saying "break their legs" when the Pats won I believe an AFC game. And Manning is a whiner as well. Big time. And lost every big game he was in until last year. Short memories. The Colts are no angels. I will not use the word class because it is old and tired.
And this crap about running up the score. We were up 21 points last year in the AFC title game, and we lost. Think Belichick doesn't remember that. And you know what happens when teams have bye weeks -- takes a while to get started again. And do you think Belichick is thinking about the Colts and making sure his team is ready to play completely??? Yep. I think you will see a different team if we get by the Colts. I think it is a pretty even game considering it is in Indy. Either team could win.
And lastly quite frankly, I don't think Belichick gives a damn because no whatever he does he is going to listen to crap. He took Brady out after the first series in the 4th quarter. What, should all the players just sit down or take a knee.
You folks need to start thinking about the Giants rather than the Pats. They are the real challenge to you getting to the SB.

The 90's boys were the best in the modern era IMO......you guys are scaring us!

Suspension issues always been in the league, all teams attempt to steal signals
And yes no team has dominated the league like the 2007 Pats are doing. And they are doing it in th1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters.
We are only team that made a game of it and they put a 50 spot on us.
Still think with a break or two we will beat them in rematch.

Other than a few routs in SB our 1990's teams controlled the ball and we won convincingly a lot. But if we scored 40 points in Super Bowl era 5 times I'd be suprised. Aikman never threw more than 23 TD's.We were not a big play, air it out team. A grind it out and posession offense with a very good D.
What Pats are doing to NFL IN 2007 is pure dominance. Calling it like it is.

I only have one comment. Be proud that you had that time. Be very proud. Some teams have never had it. To me, I think of the Bills and Browns. Two very, very proud organizations. Nothing. I have a very soft spot for those teams. Would love to see either one win the big one.
I have no idea what the Pats are going to do the rest of the year. Seriously, none. We lost Morris. Big loss. But this Brady to Moss thing is something I have never seen before with the Pats. I just will enjoy it while it lasts. If we continue to do well, I think Moss will ask for the world -- me I think he deserves it -- but I have no idea what the FO of the Pats will do. I was flat out mad, like Brady when they let Branch go. I am just a fan.
Moss is just as good as Brady. These guys are something else. I know Brady has gotten a lot of praise, but how Moss was not appreciated, well, I cannot figure it. The first game, I said this guy is slow, but why is he running past everyone??? And anything near him, he brings in. Moss is a really, really good player. 4th round. Nobody wanted him. I just do not understand it.
And yes, I really think the Giants are going to be the team YOU need to beat to make it to the SB. Nothing is a given. Nothing.
Colts for us. We are pretty evenly matched. We need the win tomorrow for home field advantage. If we lose, then, we will just have to try harder in the AFC game.

Moss is a very good player. Outstanding hand eye coordination. Still very fast, if not as fast as he once was. He was an unbelieveable pickup for a 4th round pick.
I usually try not to say "I told you so" very much because I think it's unbecoming... however, I knew instantly when I heard Moss was going to New England that the rest of the NFL screwed the pooch by just letting him waltz right to Boston.
Really, I don't think Moss would have been nearly as good a pickup for almost any other team because he needed exactly what New England had to offer him: A team that polices itself and would put up with none of his crap that he's pulled elsewhere. A team that would be competing for a super bowl, or at the very least, winning a lot. A team which is set at QB. A team where no player is bigger than the team.
Indy would have worked for him too. Maybe Dallas. Maybe Pittsburgh. That's about it.
Anyway, the thing that makes him so special is his height, jumping ability and most of all... his remarkable hands. He catches everything in the same zipcode as he is. He has wonderful athleticism and hand-eye coordination next to noone.
I knew that putting a motivated and re-energized Moss in a disciplined environment with a very strong coach and a pro bowl QB would mean trouble for the rest of the AFC and indeed, the rest of the NFL.
IOW, I hated seeing him go to a team that I saw last year fall short of its 4th superbowl only because it had terrible WR's. I knew he would make a huge difference in your team. I was hoping some other team would come along and offer more for him than you guys.
Fortunately for you guys and unfortunately for the rest of the NFL, it never happened.
