I dont want to hear anything in this thread about McFadden because I dont think we're gonna pony up that much to move up to get him (as much as I would love to have him). I just want to hear your oppinions on these two on who would be a better fit or compliment to the offense and the Barbarian. I personally would love to have Stewart, I've been following him since he was a prep in Washington State. He would bring some tough running and power to go along with MB3, but maybe slatons slashing style would better suit the run game to add what jones hasn't really consistantly added. What are your thoughts on this?

Neither. If we absolutely must have a RB that early, I'd trade down and take Tashard Choice.

Jonathan Stewart runs with speed and power, I like him behind that big O-line... But I like Mendanhall a little better from the Univ of Illinois.

That is one thing that is very misleading about him and people dont realize he's a big pack that can plow through the line and is tough to take down but he also runs like a 4.4 forty. I still remember watching a game this season where it took literally 6 defenders to bring him down and they still didnt when the refs had to call the play over. He can also return KO which would be an added bonus

Guys, please remember to use proper nouns before you launch into a post using pronouns and you haven't identified the noun that corresponds with the pronoun.
Who are you talking about, Stewart or Mendenhall?
If Stewart, I think Seattle has its eyes on him. Shaun Alexander is possibly done in Seattle, and they need a replacement.

Id like to see us spend a 3rd or 4th rounder on a guy like Dantrell Savage from Oklahoma St. Seems like he's be a perfect complimentary back to Barber. He ran in the 4.3s when timed at junior college then entered the Big 12 and was a very productive back.
9 straight 100+ yard games, 11 of the last 13 games. Only 2 games under 5 ypc this season. Decent hands out of the backfield and a threat in space. Wouldn't cost a ton (thus allowing us to resign Barber) and wouldn't take a bunch of carries away from Marion either.
Plus our backfield would be The Barbarion and The Savage.
This would give us a potentially upgraded RB situation while still having our first 3 or 4 picks to address other issues.

I don't think Slaton will be a good pro. I'll take Stewart.
I actually think the opposite, because Slaton has better pure running skills
I'm leery of both however, as both play in offenses that create gaping running lanes...I watched Stewart the last couple of games they played, and he looked average at best...Slaton at least has really quick feet and breakaway speed

he does? how exactly? he's had over 200 carries every season...he's caught 64 passes in 3 seasons, scored 50 rushing tds and 5 more on receptions...he's never lost a fumble (in fact their stats show he has never fumbled at all) and he has tremendous speed and quickness and has a multitude of 50+ yd plays running and receiving
is he as big as Barber? no he isnt...but he'd be a nice complement and is a game breaker...personally I want McFadden and I also like Felix Jones, but if we didnt make any draft day moves and ended up with Slaton I'd be pretty pleased...

It's very fortunate for us that this Draft appears to be rich and deep with respect to the RB position.
We can probably get a quality RB even in the 2nd or 3rd round.
Just to sum up some of the names, in no particular order,
D Mac
Mendenhall
Stewart
Rice
Choice
Smith
Slaton
M Hart
F Jones
Allen Patrick
J Davis
Did I forget anyone?

Stewart played the last few games with turf toe, which Eric Dickerson said was the most painful injury a running back can have.

Kevin Smith of UCF.I like him, Ray Rice of Rutgers, or Jonathon Stewart of Oregon with one of our first rounders, preferably the 2nd or our 2nd round pick if RBs are falling.

My Wish List (based on position/probability/value)
1.Mendenhall--Has the entire package.(late first/second rounder)
2.Savage--Best complimentary option to Barber (third/fourth rd pick)
3.Kevin Smith--Kind of reminds me of Ryan Grant/Dorsey Levens running style (late first/second)
4.Jamaal Charles--Explosive, but his blocking ability needs some work.(third/fourth rd)
5.James Davis--another burner and a bit larger than Charles (third rd)

Hes got a little Emmitt in him.
He reminds me a lot of Michael Turner though. I couldn't figure out why Turner fell so far in the draft. I guess it was because he played at N. Illinois but he was a bad *** there.
The thing I like about Rice is his durability more than anything. Thats one of the major concerns for a RB at this level and I think he'll be straight.

Hopefully Charles will stay at UT for next season. If he does I think he will give himself a chance to go as a 1st rd pick in the 2009 draft

Being compared to Brian Westbrook is a pretty good compliment in my view. I hate Philly but I respect the heck out of Westbrook and what he brings to the table.

If hes Brian Westbrook then I hope we get him but he reminds me of a poor mans Reggie Bush.
If Barber takes a fall I wouldnt be as comfortable with him as I would be some others. Even Mike Hart i'd be more comfortable with if Barber got hurt.

I'm kinda surprised that no one has mentioned Felix Jones, especially with the Arkansas ties. I think he is the perfect compliment to Barber and he's already used to sharing the load and spotlight. Not to mention return ability and receiving skills.

I wouldn't bank on all of the top Junior backs declaring
Bizwah
12-12-2007, 09:30 PM
What's all this "compliment" talk?
I just want a GOOD RB. Who care's how he "compliments" Barber?
If we could draft Barber's clone I would do it. Wouldn't hurt at all to have two backs like Barber.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding what people are saying, but I think you get into trouble when you worry about finding a COMPLIMENT or backup. You just take the best player at the position that you can.
Stewart reminds me of Barber....but that wouldn't stop me from drafting him.
All that being said, I'm not sure there are any real top flight RB prospects in the draft other than McFadden. There are plenty to be had in rounds two through four.
Choice would be a nice prospect. I do like Kevin Smith...he's a slasher. I think he would fit in a Denver-type offense...one cut and go. There's a bunch of clips of him on youtube. One clip has all 41 carries of his game against UAB (he had like 300 yards rushing that game). He has a lot of nice runs, but he also gets stopped in the backfield quite a bit.
Sorry, I got distracted I guess....Between Slaton and Stewart, I'll take Stewart.

I completely agree with the first and second quote... and as far as Rice...dadgum but if you slapped a Cowboy #22 Jersey on him that said Smith and taped some of the moves and runs that I am not sure I would always be able to tell you who was the real Emmitt and who was the memorex...I really hate to do that to the kid... that is setting the bar far too high. But it is who he reminds me of and I am probably only setting him up for failure in my mind.
