I'll be honest. I thought we had a chance to pull off one of the greatest drafts in Cowboys history in 2002. It seemed like the ultimate blue light special draft. Lots of top talent at bargain spots, but I guess we all know now why they dropped so far. Roy Williams is a stud and will continue to be the man but I thought we had a lot more first round talent steals after him. I guess the only guy we should have ever drafted with "character issues" was Randy Moss, and not the 2nd/3rd round guys.
Derek Ross... gone
Antonio Bryant... gone
Jamar Martin... gone
Pete Hunter.... IR
Andre Gurode... doing better but will lose his job next year to Peterman?
Tyson Walter... late surprise? (but probably going to lose out eventually to Al Johnson)
It's official, Jerry Jones is absolutely terrible at the draft, he never did get any better. I hope to god Bill Parcells is telling him who to pick these last few years. At least Jones can save some face with that 2001 draft now that Tony Dixon is starting to play a little better.

you cant blame him for players who get injured...I still would have kept Jamar Martin or Darian Barnes because the guy was a vastly superior blocker...I dont care if Barnes can play some special teams, I want a FB who opens holes and occasionally can catch a pass...Bryant is a good player, he just couldnt work with this coaching staff...Ross was a bust, but we drafted him in the 3rd rd when most regarded him a borderline 1st rd prospect...Gurode seems to be playing well and Tyrson Walter was a good later rd pick...Roy Williams is a good player now and once a defensive coach with half a brain gets ahold of him he'll really flourish

I know that JJ puts the final stamp of approval on every decision but he's been getting some bad advice from whoever is doing the talent evaluation.
You can blame Campo or Jones but I don't know why Lacewell and his cronnies have been getting a free pass for the last 10 years.

Brutal drafts by Jerry....there was much talk that he had finally turned it around...not so....Jerry never really got better...he simply had more quality picks than when we were a good team...but if you look at the value we have received, for the selections, its pretty awful.
I don't blame Jerry for the 2002 draft. Those were talented players, and guys worth the risk IMO. Nearly everyone on this site loved the draft back then, as did all the media outlets. To proclaim Jerry an idiot for drafting players everyone was in favor of is hypocritical.
But, selections of Kavika Pittman, Shante Carver, Sherman Williams, Tony Dixon, etc, etc, etc....etc, were downright silly from the get go.

Dale, I never said Jerry was an "idiot"...I might have thought it, but I didn't say it. :)
But, that said, this is why people who grade drafts after they've just been completed, or even the following year...are misguided. It takes a few years to grade an entire draft. Some individual players will be easy to grade but an entire draft is a different story.
On another note, I never quite understood the mindset that says because a fan says a draft is good...or a player move is good...and then criticizes it after it backfires, that it stamps the criticism "invalid" because the fan has contradicted him/herself. It doesn't change the fact that the move wasn't a good one.
They are paid to be the experts...we aren't. It's our job to be fickle fans... :)

I think those guys are talented but unfortunately, they just didn't fit Parcell's requirements. Another coach might be able to salvage these player, but for BP, they obviously didn't measure up in one form or another.
The one I hated to see go was Jamar. Derek and AB - you can kind of sense they weren't going to be around for long. We were going to find out about Pete this year until his unfortunate injury. Andre just makes too many mental lapses and Tyson, he's kind of "jack of all trades, master of none" kind of player.

That's if you count Hunter. Better than average I'd say.

I agree I was pretty excited and the Cowboys got straight A grades from everyone on the draft. Looking back, we picked two attitudes, and I'll bet they hoped at least one would work out for them. It was worth the gamble though.

Dale, couldn't agree with you more.
TB, what exactly makes you think Peterman can beat out Gurode? Peterman didn't look all that impressive this year and now has to come back from a serious injury. He will need to work his @rse off just to get back to where he was, much less improve.
