View Full Version : VT`s Game Sun. - Still Plenty of Hope!!!

Hello All,
No doubt, there`s still some fans who aren`t over it yet and look at that fumble ONLY and blame VT for the loss to Pitts. To such fans, I say the following:
1st, Dal. should`ve been running the ball. The reason is that everyone watching, including the announcers, knew Pitts. was down to this last play and were going to come with a heavy blitz! Meanwhile, running the ball on 3rd-long had picked up several Key 1st downs earlier in the game, especially when Pitts. blitzed!!!
However, on VT`s part, here`s a sampling of the kinds of plays he made which good QB`s make in games like this,
On 3rd-9 at the Pitts. 41, VT comp. a 16-yd. pass to Johnson to the Pitts. 25 and comp. other key passes on the opening TD drive ; on the Dal. 46, VT comp. a 22-yd. pass to Bryant to the Pitts. 22 and had a few other key pass comps. to keep this FG drive going, toward the end of the half ; On 3rd-17 at the Dal. 48, VT comp. a 20-yd. pass to Glenn and had some other key comps. on this go-ahead FG drive ; on the Dal. 32, VT comp. a 48-yd. pass to Glenn all the way down to the Pitts. 20 ; after Dal. lost 2 yds. on a running play, at the Pitts. 22, VT comp. a 22-yd TD pass to Johnson ; on the Dal. 20, VT comp. a 16 yd. pass to Glenn to the Dal. 36 while running the clock out ; on the Dal. 36, VT comp. a 6-yd. pass to Glenn to the Dal. 42 while running the clock out ; on an ALL-IMPORTANT 3rd-3 at the Dal. 43, VT comp. a 13-yd. pass to Witten while running the clock out.
It`s obvious that VT had a good game! Including ALL the great, Key plays mentioned above, he comp. 23-36 for 284 yds. with 1 TD pass and 0 Ints. So Dal. wouldn`t have even been in position to win this game, if not for VT comp. numerous Key passes including ALL the ones listed above! There`s also a much better chance of VT playing like this, and like he has much of this season, than there is that a Fluke fumble like that is ever going to occur like that again! Another HUGE positive is that Dal. also played extremely well and good enough to beat most teams, not only last week, but most weeks!!!
But let`s give credit where it`s due. Pitts. is playing very well right now with a QB that`s extremely hot!!!
I never thought this was a must-win game, though. IMHO, there`s no such thing as a must-win game this early in the season when the team is 2-2. In fact, it seems like Dal. is improving as the season continues and Sun.`s game was, IMHO, their best overall team effort so far. If VT and Dal. play the rest of the yr. like they did Sun., they should make the Playoffs, most likely as a Wild-Card! But, if the team continues to improve and gets on a roll like Parcells, VT, etc., and the Jets did in 98, then it`s still early enough to easily pass the Giants and quite possibly catch the Eagles much like the Jets caught and passed Mia., the Bills, and the Pats in 98 to win that div. after a HORRIBLE start! That was probably tougher than this one to win, being way back in the standings not just to 2 teams but 3 at this early point in the season. And, of course, once in the post season where VT`s played very well, anything can happen!!!
However, as far as I can tell, the media`s been fair to VT about that fumble play so far. But there`s still some fans who were counting on Dal. to beat Pitts. So the`re blaming VT entirely for the loss based on just that one fumble play and this is very sad indeed!!!

This is not 1998. That was 6 years ago (which are like dog years). Back then Vinny was 35 years old. To put it in perspective, Aikman retired his battered self at 34.
I love your optimism however chances are we self destruct.

Not to mention the Terry Glenn incompletion. He was clearly pushed out of bounds, and not one ref made that claim. i wonder if Parcells knew he couldn't challenge that.

The problem isn't exactly VT, it's that there's not enough explosiveness from the playmakers. This team can still win and still do well on offense, but it simply cannot afford to make penalties (Dallas leads the league in offensive penalty yards/game) and can't turn the ball over. They just don't have the explosive playmakers that can make up the difference.
The biggest problem I see is the play of the running backs. Anderson is constantly screwing up. If Dallas gets down by 10 points or whatever, they typically wind up using a single back formation to get back into the game. Anderson just isn't the threat as a runner and pass receiver that you need to get back into the game.
The other problem is that when the Cowboys are ahead and need to run the ball and get first downs, Eddie George isn't even coming close.
I think passing the ball in the Steelers game was the right move. It was really a bit of a fluke play and Parcells was giving the Cowboys the best chance to win the game.

The problem is, that GreenBay will be thinking that this is a must win game for them. This isn't a good week to be going in a hornets nest, if we lose, next week WILL be a must win for us. I don't know if we want our backs against the wall.

Actually I already did stop by and saw someone complaining about how we treat poor VT here.
In the Zone's defense, the overall reviews of Testaverde's performances have been very fair.
He's like any other player - he wins, he's in.

Great post. I'm in the minority, but I really expect this team to enter a winning streak now. We are actually playing better than our record, and have had enough bad luck already. I can see us running off a few wins, including the first team to knock off Philly.
I like Henson, but I think Testeverde will be around most of the season. I'm still looking at 9-7.

I know it`s not 1998. But VT`s kept himself in great physical shape and can still throw the ball 65 yds. in the air! Sure he`s lost a little bit overall in that he doesn`t move around quite as well as he once did, but he never moved around that well to begin with. Despite that, VT`s been passing the ball much like he did in 98 most of the time this season! In fact, his QB rating for 19 out of the 20 qts., (the entire season up to this point except for that nightmare 4th qt. against Cleve. where he threw 3 picks), he`s played, is almost the same as it was in 98 when he won the passing title!!!
The biggest difference is that the rest of that Jet team played well with VT at QB! This yr., Dal. hasn`t played well in several phases of the game much of the time!!!
But if this team continues to improve like it has since getting blown out by Minn., I say we make the Playoffs and possibly come from behind to win the div.
