PORTER PLANS TO LEAVE RAIDERS

We thought, as did everyone else, that the Raiders were phasing out guys like Tim Brown and Jerry Rice so that Jerry Porter would have a chance to fulfill his enormous potential.

Now, with Brown and Rice gone, Porter looks to be the next man out.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Porter indicated on Thursday that he plans to leave when he becomes a free agent after the season.

"I've got 10 games here to do whatever with,'' Porter said.

Though the team denies that it tried to trade Porter, Porter seems to believe the reports. "I saw it printed in the Sporting News," Morgan said. "Tried to trade me for Quincy Morgan or something like that. I'm like, 'Damn.'"

Coach Norv Turner says that Porter hasn't fallen out of favor in Oakland. "He has really been good," Turner said. "In terms of what people think of him, Denver put Champ Bailey on him. I know they felt he is the one guy that Kerry [Collins] has a comfort level with and they were going to make sure that Kerry wasn't able to get in a rhythm."

Porter was drafted in the second round of the 2000 draft after a college career at West Virginia in which he played a variety of positions, including defensive back, receiver, and quarterback.

If/when he hits the market, we're not going to assume that the Bucs and Jon Gruden will be first in line for his services, or that Porter will be interested. Porter's relationship with Gruden during the receiver's first two seasons was rocky at time.

Talking in 2002 about Gruden's efforts to motivate him, Porter said, , "It just seemed that, with us, motivation turned into confrontation real easy."

In the end, that might be one of the reasons the Raiders are willing to part with Porter. He's one of the few Gruden guys who won't necessarily make a bee line to the Bucs.

Ive always thought that this guy is as talented physically as any WR in the NFL. We are talking David Boston pre knee injury type of physical ability. I doubt he would sign here though with our depth at WR. I would rather have him though than spending a first rounder on a WR. That being said though I bet he ends up in Baltimore or Kansas City next year.

I love this player. He'd be a great addition.

Dan Pompei did write that early in the week the Browns tried to trade for Porter. AB was a consolation prize.

Its good to see some potential targets next year with our available Cap Space.

Jerry Porter, Shaun Ellis, John Abraham, Gary Baxter

Why didn't Dallas trade Bryant straight up for Porter?

If Oakland was seriously baiting him, Dallas would have known.

That is true. Jerry has always been willing to make a deal with Al Davis. Maybe Porter wouldnt sign an extension like Morgan did.

I bet it was because the league knows what a problem child Bryant is and Oakland didn't want the headache.

We have decent depth at WR. Our problems are DT, DE, and RB ... those are the most pressing. CB and WR are a distant second.

We don't need Porter. Key and Glenn will be around for at least another year, and QMorg should give us considerable play for years to come.

WR won't be an issue for at least another year.

We had cap space this year and did virtually nothing, unless you count Wiley.

What FA's would have made this team better and NOT put us in a sh*thole of a salary cap mess in two years???

They will need that for Charles Woodson. I know McCalister signed a multiyear deal in Baltimore but I don't think the Raiders did the same with Woodson.

Exactly. I don't think Wistrom or Winfield would have helped all that much.

Porter is a good player with a lot of talent. I doubt he comes here though, I bet his asking price will be too high.

I was referring to Wiley in my NOTHING. What has he done, what did he do last week and what has he done so far

A whopping 9 Tackles, no assists, No sacks in 5 games. Tell me we couldnt have done better for 4 years and 16 million. Ekubust Doesnt look so bad and was 2 years younger

EG was a waste of money so far as well. I think we could have gotten something better for what he cost us ($660,000 with a signing bonus of $1.54 million). Tell me we couldnt have found better for 2 million

6 million for 2 players who have basically shown NOTHING. I'm sure we could have found even 1 player who could have more of an impact then these 2 for 6 million this season

If there wasnt anything better than why even bother spending the money

well we could talk about how freaking retarded it was not to go after S Davis last year or Corey Dillon this year when we knew we were going to sign a veteran RB anyway. (not that we as fans knew but BP and JJ knew)
I think it was dumb not to go after Wistrom. He's a good cat. Even though it would've cost us a lot more, we all know he would've been a solid upgrade over Ekubust and we wouldn't have to talk about going after Abraham or Ellis next year. I mean Wiley is behind Ekuban in sacks this year.....are you kidding?!?!?!
What a pathetic waste. I haven't seen a game yet this year where I noticed Wiley was even on the field. Coleman, Ogobu, and Thornton might as well be getting the snaps, heck wiley doesn't even make tackles on running plays!

I don't think Porter and AB are even close in terms of raw athletic ablity. Porter runs in the 4.3s at 220 lbs. AB is right at 200 and has always been a 4.5-4.6 type of guy.

I absolutly think that Porter would be a good fit here. I too am in serious like with Porter.

I think Key is the number one guy. Move's the chains, gets the tough yards. I think Porter would be the deep guy and a real tough match up opposite Key. I think Glenn becomes the third guy, which actually works with what BP wants because he doesn't think Glenn can be used as much due to his physical stature. Glenn, all of a sudden, becomes unstopable. Who's third CB is going to cover him? Witten continues to develope, Campbell comes back healthy as the down and dirty TE and JJ's speed at RB. You get Porter and all of a sudden, I see real big time potential for this offense. How much easier would that make it for a young QB like say Henson? This team could become very dangerous very quickly.

Well you won't notice him on passing downs much any more because Thornton plays in the obvious passing situations over wiley.

Anybody else notice that by each passing game Thorton has been getting a little bit better? Whe I first saw him 3 games ago, all I saw was a speed rush from the outside. Now, last game, I saw him do a couple of inside moves. He also had his best game last week as well.

I doubt he will be allowed to hit hit the open market. Somebody will trade for him before FA starts or he will be tagged.

Ekuban wasn't a bad player, he was retarded by the retarded "contain" D we use.

He's on pace for a 10 sack season. That's not too bad for Ekubust. If he did that in Dallas, we'd be kissing his feet ... and the DE problem would be solved.

21 catches 269 yards and 0 TDs will not get you franchise tagged. He has all of the physical attributes of a number one WR but hasn't done it yet for whatever reason. Oakland will not pay him like a top 5 WR in the NFL unless they are crazy. That will also eat up a large chunk of salary cap space. I think a transition tag is more likely. I really like what he could bring to the table and it would free us up in the draft to address one more position. God knows we need it.

Bababooey is right...Porter should keep his mouth shut, otherwise the Raiders will franchise or transition him to get some compensation while keeping him off the FA market next season. Al Davis doesn't like his team being badmouthed in the press by punky players, and he probably didn't want another punk in AB.

I don't think so. Woodson is going to be an issue for them. Perhaps transition but I don't know about franchise. They gave Porter his last contract based on what they thought he might be. Bottom line here, if Porter wants out, I don't think the Raiders can stop him unless there willing to let Woodson walk. Also, they are going to be trying to sign Ricky Williams. You can bank on that. Figure they need sever help on both sides of there line and all of a sudden, it's starts getting real interesting.
