to say that if Tony Dungy retires that they have Jim Caldwell waiting to replace him....interesting. Discuss....Yet we can't say that Jason Garrett is next in line?

Is Caldwell black? Well, how many damn redheaded coaches are NFL Head coaches?
:laugh2: I hate all these brown/black/blonde haired coaches! We need a "Hair Color Rule" too!!

That's why I don't like the rule; I think the person that is hired for the head coaching position should be the best qualified canidate regardless of race.

Problem is that the players are inordinately black and the coaches are inordinately white.
I understand the idea behind the rule, but I think the rule has major flaws in it. The problem is that there is no easy solution.

This 2008, with that being said, an interview should not be based on the color of a persons skin but the person ability (job performance) should be the determining factor.

The purpose is to get these coaches an oppertunity and their name out there. It's not affirmative action. Case in point the coach hired in Pitts last year. He was there only to meet the rule and he blew them away so they hired him.

I will agree with you, but there are good white and black coaches in the NFL and in the college ranks. While I understand why this rule was implemented I think the rule has been misused.

Sure. That's an ideal.
But over the years the league showed it clearly wasn't doing that which is exactly why this rule is in place.

That is the intention of the rule but the reality is that is not always the case. Case in point Miami.

Correct, I just wish that everyone could be on a level playing field in regards to the head coaching position.

Very good point. Without the rule however, you can bet the house he would've never gotten called for an interview.

Actually this is Affirmative Action.
People totally misunderstand what affirmative action is -- AA is about monitoring to see is hirings match qualified applicants (e.g. if 25% of the qualified applicant pool is African American then you would expect about 25% of the jobs to go to African Americans), then if monitoring shows a discrepancy, actions to address that discrepancy. These actions ALMOST ALWAYS involve increased recruitment, training, and sometimes more extreme acts like required interviews.
In EXTREME cases would organizations be required to give preference to minority applicants over whites when qualifications were equivalent.
Under no circumstances are QUOTAS legal. This is an idiotic myth that is put forward by opponents. The law is very clear about this.
(substitute women for men above for cases of gender-based AA).
Also, I don't think that Pittsburg had Tomlin out to "only satisfy the rule" since their owner is the one who wrote the rule.

Well, persons with disabilities should be concerned as well. As far as a persons sexual orientation that has nothing to do with football. And at some point in time we will see our first women coach (head, offensive coordinator, defense coordinator) etc.

Also, don't forget, abersonc, that whoever does get hired the players need to not like him or hate him in some way. You know, you cannot work for someone you like, right? :laugh2:
Damn! And in the Garrett announcement when he said he was staying, he said Romo asked him to go play basketball at 4:00 that afternoon!! :bang2:

I think we all believe Jason Garrett will be the Cowboys' head coach at some point.
With the Rooney Rule, I was wondering if the Cowboys could name Garrett their coach without interviewing a minority. According to the league, yes, the Cowboys can. The rule allows for a team to have a contractual arrangement with an assistant coach to be its next head coach. I'm not sure if that language is/was written into Garrett's new contract, but when he was asked last week if Jerry Jones talked about him being his next head coach, Garrett said, "No."
And there's this scenario: the Cowboys get off to a slow start in 2008 and Jones wants to make a change before it's too late in the season and names Garrett his guy. Not the interim coach, but the coach.

I think this was discussed with the Gregg Williams thing in RedSkins land...
If I read it right, The Midget could name Williams the next coach without having to do the "Rooney Rule" thing....

IMO Garrett, Mora, Caldwell and Williams are all worthy coaches to take over and these kinds of deals would be smart.

Why? Speculation is much easier and makes for a story when none exists. I doubt that any owner would go to that extreme for an assistant -- stupid to enter a binding contract with someone like that.
Tony Dungy is a lame duck, he will be looking over his shoulder, he is just a puppet now blah blah fart blah ZZZZZZZZZZ
Does anyone not notice the difference?
Tony is saying he has one more year. It's HIS choice to only have one more year. The Colts therefore are already naming his replacement.
Here in Dallas, it's rather obvious Jerry has Garrett next in line, but we have Wade as HC and I don't think Wade is wanting to go anywhere.
Hence, apples and oranges.

Yeah as an African American I'm still upset there has to be such a rule in place... I believe teams should hire the best guy for the job, regardless of color. The NFL and NBA have set the mark for coaching standards but it's time for Division 1A college football to catch up.
