View Full Version : Cut Roy & Franchise Hamlin

Cutting Roy on June 1st he will cost about 3.5 million on the 2008 cap.
Franchising Hamlin would cost about 4.5 million.
Roy is set to cost 7.5 on the cap this next year if he is on the team.
It would cost .5 million to cut Roy and Franchise Hamlin. I don't think there is a fan here that would rather have Roy over Hamlin.
Get it done Jerry.

First, :welcome:
Second, really don't believe the Cowboys will cut Roy. He will be a Cowboy for at least one to two more years.

Roy Williams will be back next year and Ken Hamlin SHOULD be back next year. Hopefully Campo can express to Jerry the need at FS and the lack of talent we have had at that position since Woodson left.
If Campo is going to be the secondary coach Im sure that he would prefer to have Hamlin there next year. And Campo in his PC yesterday expressed the reasons they braught RW here and that he still has it in him, he said he plans on working with him and getting him back to the old RW. I think that could be the difference next year.

Talk about a cap hit

I believe your numbers are off because if they cut him then the remainder of the signing bonus they owe him all goes into this years cap, just like if they traded him, instead of just this years portion of the Bonus.
You're numbers are figuring only this years portion of that bonus in and if it were that simple Dallas might think about dumping him and upgrading.
However, since it's the escalated portion you're talking about his cap hit, if you cut him, still being around 7 million. So you'd be hit with the 7 million from him, plus the 4.5 for Hamlin on a Franchise, and you wouldn't even have Roy on the team, meaning your short a Strong Safety, and you still have money out there on your cap for the guy you got rid of.
One more time, to go along with all the other threads with ideas like this, this is NOT Madden. You don't get to 'turn off' the salary cap and do whatever you want.

Keep Roy and move him to weak side outside LB.
End of problem. End of story. Keep the "system guy" and "semi" safety blitz on every pass down...................
There...........Roy retires as a Cowboy and becomes and all-pro at two positions...........................

So you're going to pay him the contract they have with him to be a back up to Ware or Ellis at OLB? Not to mention that he'd likely be behind Spencer as well in that position.
I seriously hope that was a joke.

Continuity....................
Roy is more "part of the solution" than "part of the problem".
Find a place for him. His days playing "back there" are over. Obviously. But he's a serious run stopper and a *****in' blitzer. He's tough as nails and brings monster hits. he's big enough to play a small linebacker, and would be the fastest linebacker around. Move Ware to MLB and let him play "monster" LB. Let him have access to "sideline to sideline" play, where he's excell.............
Let Roy Williams do what Dexter Coaxley used to do...............speed at outside linebacker. And let him blitz, cover TE's and RB's comming out for passes, and BLITZ some more.................

:bang2: I dont see how someone could type that and think that it was a valid point.

The problem, probably THE biggest problem in this new NFL of Parity, Salary Cap, Free Agnecy, Coaching Carousel, etc............is the lack of "CONTINUITY".
Used to be (and I could STILL name the starting Dallas offense and defense of the 70's and 80's), that year after year after year, the same guys played for the SAME teams, and schemes were built to suit those RETURNING players............season after season after season. That's how Dallas went to the the playoffs for some 21 consecutive years, and went to 16 NFC Championships games between 1971 and 1996 (of which they won EIGHT of them).
Now, take your average "Roy Williams". A veteran, all-pro, and standard bearer in the Dallas defensive unit. Are you better off with him , or without him? Huh? Well? We're waiting? Only two choices now. Pick one.
I say, we're better off "with Him". But, he is now a liability at free safety. No doubt about it. But can he contribute and be helpful on the defense still? No doubt. So find a way to not only have him on the team, but to start and contribute. I ain't the only one whose been calling for him to move to linebacker for a couple years now. Quit acting like it's some NEW idea. It's been in the works for at least two years now. I say, give it a shot.
Hopefully, that answerer's your "rolling eye's" disbelief question...........
Be creative man...................

If a player is cut June 1st the bonus will be prorated over 2 years. That is why you see so many cuts on that date. I know we would also have dead money on 2009, but we could franchise Hamlin for a second year.

Roy was not very good stopping the run this year, which is more sad than the coverage issue.

Gotta agree.
Mods, seriously... would it be too much to ask to create a "Roy" section of the forums?
I'm one of the realists that knows Roy's coverage "problems" aren't any worse than any other SS in the NFL, but I almost want him cut just so all the threads will end.
Yes, I know, I could simply NOT click the thread, but I still get tired of reading all the "Roys sucks" type titles.
I swear, he could run into a burning building and save 57 puppies from burning to death and you ignorants would blame him for not saving the 1 kitten.
