Capers take on Cowboys

Dom Capers had his chance to come to the Cowboys and turned it down. And now he's in New England.
Why? Well, we had some moles on his conference call with the Patirots media today. Here's what coach Capers had to say.
"You never know how these things are going to go and I learned a long time ago that it's important the staffs fit together," Capers said. "It's like putting a team together. You have to have a feel for what everybody's roles are going to be and what they can contribute. That's what makes a good football team and I think it's what makes a good staff.
"I just felt going up to New England was a good fit and like I said, I've had so much respect for Bill. They're a multiple-style defense. They can play a lot of different styles. I think that's what you have to do in this era."
Take that for what you will. The question, in case you're wondering, was this: Why did New England work out for you and not Dallas. As my man JJT wrote a little while back, part of it has to do with the kind of guy Capers is.

This proves that we don't mix it up enough. We get picked apart in zone def.
and don't offer enough different looks. It's the same problem we had with Parcells.
The Offense often made adjustments, but the defense got picked on because
we stayed in the same formations.

I dont know if him commenting about what New England does is an indication that we dont mix it up enough.

He's just biding his time until next season when Jerry and Jason bring him in as DC.
No - Capers was a man and didn't want to undermine our DC.

I don't see what's the big deal with Capers honestly... He's always been an average coach.

haven't you realized that the most popular coach in Dallas is the guy coaching another team? he is always better than what we have.

You know I've noticed that too... Always blame the guy coaching if the players don't make it happen on the field.

This "proves" something?
...or perhaps he felt uncomfortable looming over another coach's shoulder, perhaps?

No - Capers was a man and didn't want to undermine our DC.I rarely agree with you, but on this, I think you hit the nail right on the head. He knew the impression would be he was here to take Brain Stewart's job and he has too much respect for the man to undermine him.

I didn't see much, if any, of a comment on the Cowboys.

How true...
The not so subtle insinuation in this case is that Capers has too much integrity to work for the Cowboys.

We just missed him, but thankly for us, Shalise Manza-Young of our sister publication, the Providence Journal, caught up with Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart in the hallway (http://www.beloblog.com/ProJo_Blogs/PatsBlog/archives/2008/02/more_on_capers.html).
He was asked about how, had the Cowboys hired Dom Capers, it may have put him in an awkward position. That's why he appreciated the respect Capers paid throughout the process, and particularly in turning the job down.
"It shows what kind of class he has," Stewart said. "Like most leaders, he has a way of not just looking at the moment, but looking ahead as well."

..while the press has jumped on the Stewart thing as to why Capers choose not to come to Dallas..
..that may have been just an excuse that could be used publically.
To look chivalrous and keep his rep in tact.
Nothing wrong with that.
The "fit" Capers is talking about and the reference to using more multiple defenses is probably a reference to Phillips, since we know Phillips REALLY runs the defense, not Stewart.
And him having said that, Capers maybe felt there was nothing to learn from the defense Phillips runs.
Pure and simple.
And that there was the possibility that Capers might run into feelings of being blocked and not having enough common ground with Phillips to make the 'fit' work.
Phillips is in control alot more than many of us want to admit. And Jones to me looks more and more like he is committed to Phillips as the right coach as we see these things happening like Capers not coming here.
I'm glad of it.
And that is where I think 'the fit"..
..didn't fit.
And that's fine for all concerned.
I also think there is some ego going on in his decision and that's fine as well. Not sure Capers could get the ego stroke he would need in Dallas.
There is a clearly Phillips staff shaping up now and Capers at this point in his career probably still feels he's HC material. And with Dallas heavily salted with so much offensive firepower with Garrett in control there and Jones as the overseeing owner..
Capers will not get any clear credit for any improvements the Cowboys would be making if Capers were here. Especially if it was in some sort of advisory role.
Again, for Capers, that's not a good fit.
The position in Patriotland as DC under Bellecheat is a much better upfront position allowing talking to the cameras in that position move if he in fact improved the Pats defense next year and more HC positions open up.
He's just more visable in New England that he ever would be in Dallas.
That's also just ego and what he needs in 'fit" for himself over coming here.
I'm just glad he didn't come here.
I had a hard time figuring out what he was going to contribute and with whom.
I guess so did Capers.

Or maybe Capers felt there was less chance of his signals being taped if he was with the Pats!!:)
