The Boston Globe wrote this before the release, but the message board/comments on the same site say that WEEI has reported it has happened. Looks like Gholston could or should be the pick by the Pats at #7 instead of a corner. This team seems to be losing a lot of players this offseason.

In a move that appears to be salary-cap related, the Patriots are expected to release outside linebacker Rosevelt Colvin today, according to a league source.
Colvin, a marquee free-agent signing in 2002, was scheduled to count $7.6 million against the salary cap and earn a base salary of $5.5 million. The 2008 season was the final year of his contract.
Colvin was a starter at outside linebacker in the Patriots 3-4 scheme. His 2007 season was cut short by a foot injury sustained Nov. 25 against the Eagles, and the Patriots seemed to miss his pass rush coming down the stretch.
The 31-year-old Colvin was credited by the teams coaches with 28 tackles last season, while adding four sacks.
With Tedy Bruschi and Junior Seau scheduled for unrestricted free agency, the Patriots have the following personnel under contract at linebacker for 2008:
Eric Alexander (2008, exclusive rights free agent)
Larry Izzo (2008, verbal agreement confirmed by agent Drew Rosenhaus)
T.J. Slaughter (2008)
Pierre Woods (2008, exclusive rights free agent)
Mike Vrabel (2009)
Oscar Lua (2010)
Adalius Thomas (2011)

That was a very poor acquisition when they made it, I think. Expensive, and never worked out. We've had some of those, but never seemed to master the cheating aspect that is necessary to offset poor free agent acquisitions. Something to look into since the penalty is so slight for the future.

Patriots fans say hello to Vernon Gholston.
Agreed.
If he's still there....
Good news is that it would leave another cornerback on the board for us!

Agreed.
If he's still there....I think he will be. People are overrating his Combine performance. It was a good performance, but it wasn't in the league of a DeMarcus Ware or Mario Williams performance.

Or where I could find it?

I think the Pats might flip picks with the Iggles and pick up Lito Sheppard. At 19, they could look at Derrick Harvey or Quentin Groves, or even Avril from Purdue. They really need a first round corner and OLB if they don't acquire one elsewhere.

I did not think it was a bad move to get Colvin when they did. They just ended up with poor results. Actually, not poor results just not spectacular results. And most of that was because he unfortunately suffered a major injury his first season in New England. That is part of the sport, but signing a 26 year old LB that was making plays in Chicago seemed like a good idea at the time and would in many cases. Better than counting on him now at age 30.

Its kind of amazing for the guy his size. I have seen him couple of times now at Colleyville's Lifetime Fitness. I guess he is regular there, especially on Saturdays. Oh, and he always seems very approachable, but I never did try to talk to him so far. I just don't like bothering people I guess.
He just doesn't look that big to me. So for him to be able to lift that kind of weights etc. is amazing.

Colvin was the mouthpiece most of last year endorsing the "Patriot Way" and explaining the family environment. Insert foot in mouth.
