ESPN PUTS THE STAKE IN SALISBURY
As you likely already know, Sean Salisbury is out at ESPN. (I was out of pocket when the e-mail from ESPN announcing the departure came through the line.)
The move was, in our view, long overdue. Per USA Today, Salisbury's contract had expired. He likely sealed his fate with that disgraceful on-air dissing of John Clayton last month, during which Salisbury called Clayton the "Cryptkeeper."
As regular visitors to this site know, we don't care much for Salisbury. He's loud, he's a jerk, and far too often he speaks in sweeping absolutes. Also, he reportedly was suspended for showing cell-phone photos of his penis to colleagues at the network. Frankly, we're surprised he lasted there as long as he did.
True to form, Salisbury is crowing about his departure.
"I have grown as much as I can at ESPN and decided to expand my horizons," Salisbury said in a statement. "I have created a brand and it's time to expand into other opportunities in TV, radio, Internet, publishing, movies and public speaking, among others. My resume speaks for itself as a football analyst, and I believe I can talk all sports with the best of them."
Hey, Sean -- a periodic cameo in an Adam Sandler flick doesn't make you an actor. A web site that looks like crap and that rarely was updated before it went off line won't turn you into an Internet mogul.
Publishing? Please. (Unless, of course, you've got a proposal for "Cell Phone Porn for Dummies.")
Sean Salisbury needed ESPN far more than ESPN needed him, and unless he plan to handle weekend sports at the UPN affiliate in Tallahassee, his broadcasting career is officially over.

ESPN HIRES CRIS CARTER by Michael David Smith
ESPN announced today that former Eagles, Vikings and (briefly) Dolphins wide receiver Cris Carter will join the network as a TV analyst on April 1.
In its announcement, ESPN said Carter will work as an analyst on the NFL Draft and on NFL Live, SportsCenter and other shows, but it did not say if he will work on Sunday NFL Countdown. Whether Carter joins the Countdown crew may depend on whether Keyshawn Johnson stays with the gang in Bristol or leaves broadcasting to return to the NFL, where he is believed to have a standing offer to sign with the Miami Dolphins.
Carter previously worked as an analyst on HBO's Inside the NFL. All of the other Inside the NFL analysts last year were moonlighting on HBO and had high-profile jobs on other networks, but HBO was Carter's only gig, so when HBO decided not to bring back Inside the NFL for the 2008 season, he was left without a broadcasting job.
Now Carter joins a crowded field of former players who are now studio analysts that includes Mike Ditka, Merril Hoge, Tom Jackson, Mark Schlereth, Emmitt Smith and Steve Young.

Did you happen to see him host "Jim Rome is Burning" last week? I was gonna post it here but i didn't. He wasn't as bad as i thought he'd be but twice he compared other athletes to himself and how he was this or that, just pimping his own prowess. He really came of a a conceded little b**** to me.

wow. Shocker.
I am suprised they hired carter though. I watch inside the nfl every week and he is pretty much awful. Him and marino were stealing money from hbo. It was blatantly obvious neither of them knew anything about 90% of the teams. All carter ever talked about was moss and the patriots. Everything he said went back to how great randy moss is and some angle on the pats.
Marino, well he just acted like he couldnt give a damn.
It will be interesting to see if carter is more prepared on espn. They havent exactly set the bar too high with their commentators. Ray buchanon was a disgrace when I watched him.....his comment on the cowboys before the skins game in november that they would win because they were mad ballin and off the hook was basically about as close to garbage as you could get.
Anyway, Anything to get keyshawn off my tv is good. Carter at least doesnt act like an egomaniac on tv even though he is one.
and I wouldnt be suprised to see Salisbury end up at 103.3 espn here in Dallas because he is on there alot and does his national broadcasts alot from the studio in arlington. I believe I was told he lives in Plano.
Can espn throw qadry ismail off next please.

I'm not a fan of Salisbury but Carter wasnt that great on Inside the NFL. Maybe he'll be better on ESPN.

Now, if ESPN would jettison Emmitt "I can't formulate sentences properly" Smith, Ray "I have absolutely no business being on TV, including cable access" Buchanon, Quadry "In terms of" Ismail and Keyshawn "large ego" Johnson, their NFL programming would be more watchable.
Now, before someone equates this to race, I'm also black. How these educated millionaires could be allowed to sit before us each week during the season and grace us with their fractured lexicons, dialects, and grammatical errors with little consequence, is beyond me. They are all embarrassing!!

No one likes a like Salisbury. Good luck to him and maybe he can hang out with Theismann :)
Lets just hope that Keyshawn and Tiki follows them as they carry Joe Buck on their shoulders out of the booth.

I know I'min the minority here, but I liked Sean as an analyst and I also liked is total lack of Political Correctness. I think he overstepped his bounds w/ Clayton, but I'd even be willing to chalk that up to being passionate about what he's talking about.
But flashing his privates around the globe on his cell phone is a bit much. But I know a lot of guys that would do the same thing, especially if involved in a "discussion" w/ other men about the size of these things. If he's flashing the ladies that is not good unless they have asked to see it. On the other hand didn't one of the Pittsburg coaches distribute some sort of pornographic email last year? Evidentally it's pretty common...

They both often took shots at each other. It was part of the whole argument/counterargument stuff they always bring John on for. I don't see how "Cryptkeeper" is such a horrible thing. It shows Sean is an idiot, but it's not like he cracked a joke about the guys penis or something. It was just a stupid, unfunny, joke.
I'm not going to miss Sean, I didn't like or dislike him, he was just there. If they had replaced him in the middle the season, I wouldn't have asked, "What's he doing now?"

They both suck. Its like taking spam and replacing it with tripe. All this really tells me is that the networks need to start looking to broadcasting schools who produce people trained for years for this kind of thing and start bringing those guys in.
The likes of K Johnson, Chris Carter, Sean Salisbury, Dan Marino, Emmitt Smith, Steve Tasker, and a whole slew of others are a case of horrible human resources management. I am sure Syracuse and other fine broadcasting schools can produce better talent then that garbage.

They need to forget Cris Carter and just give Darren Woodson the work. He's easily one of the very best and most talented guys on the entire network. I'm sure they don't want "too many Cowboys" with Emmitt already in a prime time role, though... Which of course is stupid.

SALISBURY WANTED A SEVEN-FIGURE DEAL
How stoopid is Sean Salisbury? He's sufficiently stoopid not to know a good thing when he had it. And he's sufficiently stoopid not to realize that he'll never, ever be as exposed or as wealthy as he was while getting paid by ESPN.
But Salisbury convinced himself that he was underpaid and unappreciated by Bristol, and he says that he asked for a seven-figure salary in order to trigger a "mutual parting."
"I'm a free agent," Salisbury told the Los Angeles Times from his cell phone (snicker) on Tuesday. "I've been liberated. I knew this was coming, but I couldn't be happier."
The problem apparently was that Salisbury didn't get paid as much as more famous former football players.
"I'd grown tired of being punished for not being an NFL superstar," Salisbury said. "Analysts who don't work as hard as me, don't prepare as hard as me, and don't have my resume were making more than me just because of their ability to throw or catch a football." (Or, as the case may be, run with a football and then win Dancing with the Stars.)
"I'd done nothing wrong, and if you hear otherwise, it's not true. I did everything that was asked of me," Salisbury said, possibly in an effort to defuse any rumors that he was fired for calling John Clayton the "Cryptkeeper" on the air last month.
Salisbury claims that he has an offer from FSN, and that he might land in a "non-sports role with CBS." Maybe he's been hired to fire Katie Couric because she doesn't move her arms when she does the news.

I agree, and it always seemed that Falsebury pulled this type of tactic when Clayton started to make him look like a fool.
I don't remember if that was the case when the "crypt keeper" comment was made, but I've noticed it for years. It always made him come off as a cry-baby jock that needed to rely on his intimidation factor when he was too stupid admit that he's too stupid to be a part of the conversation.
As far as him being p***ed about the fact that he was making less than some "superstars" on the BSPN line-up: get over it! There's a limit that a never-has-been reaches when he goes into the private sector. If it weren't for ESPN 80% of the NFL fans out there wouldn't even know who the clown is. When Quincy Carter almost doubles your career numbers in the league (while playing one year less), it's hard to take you serious on any level.
