Moss’ go-route could land in 5 places

The Randy Moss rumors grew more dire last night, with word that the Packers and maybe even the Cowboys were considering runs at the star free agent receiver and NFL.com reporting that Moss has grown “frustrated” with the Patriots lack of movement.

Although it still seems to make the most sense for Moss to stay in Foxboro, the money has to work, and right now it doesn’t. The NFL.com story also noted that Moss doesn’t plan to take another discount to stay with the Pats.

If Moss leaves, where might he go? If he’s to be taken at his word about wanting to play for a winner, his options narrow considerably.

And judging from his misery in Oakland, he’s probably not going anywhere with a subpar quarterback.

Those two factors eliminate much of the league.

Here are the five teams most likely to offer the right mix to Moss:

1. Cowboys - Owner Jerry Jones is rich, so that’s not an issue. And Tony Romo is a Pro Bowl quarterback, so that would work, too. Don’t be surprised if Dallas puts on the full-court press. Jones already is on record saying he wants to make a splash this offseason, and the Cowboys thus far have been surprisingly quiet, beyond re-signing lineman Flozell Adams.

2. Packers - The Pack should have faced the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, but they couldn’t seal the deal at home against the Giants. QB Brett Favre is supposedly mulling retirement, but as the NFL Network’s Adam Schefter noted, nothing would energize him like the presence of Moss, whom he campaigned for last offseason.

3. Steelers - Big Ben Roethlisberger already has won a Super Bowl and last year made the leap from game manager to game changer. The Steelers are always in the hunt, though they appear set at wide receiver with Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes.

4. Giants - Although Eli Manning may not yet be an elite QB, he’s got great bloodlines, and many expect him to blossom after what he did in Super Bowl XLII. That said, caveat emptor - he ranked 25th in quarterback rating.

5. Saints - They’re coming off a down season, but with QB Drew Brees, RB Reggie Bush and WR Marques Colston, the Saints are an excellent candidate to bounce back, especially in the weak NFC South. Their interest in Asante Samuel proves they’re willing to spend this offseason.

The Seahawks (Matt Hasselbeck) and Browns (Derek Anderson) mildly fit the formula, but it’s hard to picture Moss in either uniform. Then again, it’s hard to believe he couldn’t reach a deal with the Pats, so anything’s possible.

Note that the Philadelphia Eagles are not listed. I just don't buy the Eagles part of the rumor, they are notoriously thrifty spenders and haughty in their belief that they can make any wide receiver work in that system.

It's only 6AM, but here's a toast to Jerry putting on that full court press.

Some of you need to get it through your pea size brains, Randy Moss isn't coming here, period!!!!!!

Dallas has 3.5 mil in cap space as it is, which includes money for signing the draft picks, so no money for Moss, period!!!

All these rumors of Moss coming here to visit are nonsense and made up, if anything Moss is just trying to get more money offers from teams to go back to New England for a better deal, MOSS WILL BE PLAYING WITH NEW ENGLAND NEXT YEAR!!!!!

I doubt he comes here, too. But, Jerry and Stephen have always been able to make the money work. What Moss wants more than money is a longterm deal. Teams structure contracts all the time that have escalating salaries.

Here's a thought that would put more money into the pot. Restructure RWs contract. His playing time is going to diminish anyway with Thomas being the better pass coverer (if that's a word) than RW. Why pay millions to someone who isn't going to be playing but maybe 2 downs out of 4?

I think to completely dismiss the possibility of him coming here is lunacy.

I'll try to explain a few things in a way even you can understand.

1) This is a fan message board. This is the place to play NFL fantasy football.

2) The 2008 Dallas Cowboys potential FA acquisition of Randy Moss does not fall into the NFL Fantasy category.

3) We have or can easily create plenty of cap space for Moss.
Ex: Owens is on the last year of his contract. It pays him and will count against the cap for about 9 mil. Many have speculated, including Jerry Jones, on the likely extension of Owens' deal. He's earned it.
OK we rip up 2008 and give Owens a 4 year deal worth 36 mil 12 mil SB for 2008-2011. The deal can be structured to count against the cap like this: 2008 5mil, 2009 8mil, 2010 10mil, 2010 13mil.
Note that we have reduce Owens' 2008 cap hit by 4 mil.

There's your cap space for the impossible Moss deal! NOW GO GET YOUR SHINE BOX!

I doubt he would want out of NE.

But, by some chance he does because he sees a dwindling talent base up there, and he can co-exist with TO, then I say we make a run at him.

With TO and Moss on the field - that would be downright scary.

When owners really want to make cap room to sign a player, it can be done in numerous ways..

The Steelers part is bull ****. Everyone in the leaugue knows the Steelers never go into Free Agency, and when they do its to sign a 3rd string player. They're just like the Bears, Chiefs, Colts and Packers.

Would luv to see JJ pull the trigger on this one. I really wouldn't be suprised if he did. If Moss visits VR, it's a good chance he doesn't leave. JJ is a helluva salesman...

Dan Snyder must be kicking himself right now(or maybe that is what he pays Cruise for) because Moss is available and he was no cap space. I still wouldn't rule them out.

That's OK, owners can create cap space whenever they want, supposedly.

Lil' Danny's legs are too short to kick himself.
