View Full Version : Former players as scouts?

In conjunction with the thread about players who became coaches, how about players who've become involved in personnel after they retire? I'm also thinking that Woody, if he doesn't become a coach or broadcaster, might be a good personnel person.
Anyway, how about players who now work in personnel? Top of the list would have to be Ozzie Newsome, who's considered up there with Scott Pioli as one of the best talent evaluators in the NFL. You could probably add Matt Millen, with his duties at the Lions. Funny how he was derided as being an idiot for so many years--now all of a sudden he's looking pretty good!
Any other former players people can think of?

I don't know if you remember the name Cornell Green...Cowboys DB in the 60's-early 70's. When he retired, he scouted for the Boyz. He has actually been scouting for the Broncos for the last 20 years and is in the last year working for them...looking forward to retirement.
I'm sure there are a number of former players as scouts. But other than the two you mentioned, I can't think of any former players who have been successful as VP's, PP directors, or GM's. Which I find interesting.
You would think that people in the game would do better at putting teams together instead of the execs who dominate the offices currently in the league.

Unfortunately, these players aren't business people. They play the game of football, but can't even balance a check book. How many of these millionnaires actually leave the game with all their money???
Same with the NBA. They actually want to start implementing a retirement pool taken from player salaries, so there'll be money left over after they retire. Most NBA morons dribble, shoot, and block well, but throw money around like it's water ... and then when it's gone, it's gone.
You want these guys as NFL execs???
hey wait, Dan Marino was a GM for a week once !

Talking about Millen, I get a chuckle about that even now. Every Media GM wanna be ( The sports talk people), were really bashing Millen for last three years. I lived in Detroit till this year and I heard the same from their talk shows too.
Suddenly he is really good now. I thought, only first year, he was kind of clueless, since he had to learn on job. But from his second year he learned and made some good front office changes that really made a good impact.
He made some mistakes ( like his calling out a player in talk show and calling Morton a you know what etc.) but he has been steadily stocking up Detroit with good talent. He made arguably one of the best FA signing last year in Dre Bly.
But by far I think Ozzie Newsome is the best of the bunch, no doubt.
