View Full Version : Is the problem on offense REALLY the guy calling the plays ?

Ok..

Haven't heard this mentioned yet as far as I can tell, but I'm going to throw up an obvious question.

Since we are having all these problems scoring in the Red Zone, running to move the chains and controlling the TOP..

Is it time to remove the responsibility of the guy calling the plays and hand the job off to the next guy..?

Is it time to take the headset away from BP and the clipboard and let Sean Payton or Maurice Carthon takeover the game plan and execute it..?

I'm serious. I've been thinking about this since last season. I felt our offense was very predictable and well scouted in the second half of last season and it's certainly being defensed too well this year.

Is it just that BP has been out-schemed because he's not that good of a playcaller..? Could it be he isn't in touch with what needs to be done..? He's not in touch with his players and their abilities as he thinks he is..?

We certainly have had evidence all season he's calling a poor game at crucial times this season that has cost us games, even in his own words.

So, why not let Sean Payton just handlle it and BP step back and be headcoach and not head offensive man..?

Or Mo Carthon..? We just rolled over Payton's contract and Carthon's too, I believe. And I'm sure they have tremendous input in preparing the game plan, suggesting plays during games, etc.

But maybe we need a change of pace in the coach calling them. It's my understanding that BP is the guy calling the plays or approving the plays or whatever.

If I'm mistaken here, then somebody here on the forum who knows how the playcalling goes and who is responsible can shed some light, please.

Who is responsible..IF Payton is more responsible, then maybe it needs to be BP more. Or Carthon more.

Maybe what's going on is that the offense is being run much like our running attack is.. being run..BY COMMITTEE .

And unfortunately, we know where the running attack is. Maybe this concept extends to the play calling, too. Too many chiefs and not enough indians so to speak. I'm not sure how it works.

I've never heard BP clearly state how it works.

Maybe it's time to open up the question and ask him. If it's BP more or less, maybe he needs to delegate for authority to the other two guys..or..maybe they to him.

Whatever.

But it seems to me, around the league, when offenses struggle, there is usually some changes in the guys calling the plays or preparing the Sunday gameplan to shake things up.

Why hasn't this been suggested here or in the media..? BP is my man, but sometimes, you get in a rut and you need help. Maybe somebody else who hasn't had sufficient input into the plays being called needs to be inserted.

What do you guys think..?

While everybody searches for answers with the problems and we are examining what the answers could be, maybe it's not as much a player problem as much as it's a playcalling problem.

Does this make sense..?

It does to me.

Sometimes a head coach becomes a pedestrian play-caller because his other responsibilities keep him from dedicating enough time and effort to that phase of his job.

I think we should make Payton the specific playcaller, with Parcells telling him, the formation and whether to run or pass.

Parcells needs to focus on who starts, what packages we use, evaluating coaching and developing players. Payton can worry about specifics of the playbook.

Well considering theres a brick wall at the 20, and has been for a number of years now whether it's been Zampese or Reilly or Coslett or Payton or Bill or whomever, I'd say handing the job off to the next guy wouldnt necessarily change anything.

We're not talking a 4 or 5 *game* slump here, we're talking a 4 or 5 year one. At least.

Payton (if I remember Big B correctly) is the play caller unless He is specifically overriden. But Bill is a big believer in the top guy is always responsible. :D

Wasn't Payton's playcalling responsibilities taken from him by Fassel with the Giants one year. I belive Fassel simpified the offense and the Giants went on a wining streak.

You are correct, sir.

I was wondering when somebody might chip in with that observation.

I recall the same thing.

So..if we have Payton directing the offense behind the scenes, are we going down that same road as the Jints did with him. I'm sure it's not being lost on their fans that Payton was relieved of his playcalling job partway into that very season and that's when we picked him up...he wanted out of the NY situation the following off-season.

Jints fans must be snickering about now about our Pop & Stop offense and Payton having his hands in it.

Now. it's not finger pointing I'm trying to get at. It's just trying to see where past problems maybe causing present problems. Now maybe some people here on the forum are more familiar with how Parcells handled things in New England and with the Jets as well as the Giants.

I seem to remember Ron Ernhart (sp.) whom I believe is now with the Steelers used to be one of his Offensive coordinators. He's Cowart's (sp.) guy, now..yes..?

Anybody recall who did what there with the Jets exactly..? Or the Pats or the Giants.?.

We all know about Belichek (sp.) defensively..but little do I recall about the O coordinators for Parcells.

And have no idea of any history of how offensive playcalling was delegated.

BP implied they might run more and simplify the offense to cutdown mistakes..which seem the right thing to do with our 2nd string WR starting and so many guys new on the OL and backfield trying to work things out..not to mention the QB new to everybody in his huddle...except Key.

We'll see. But something has to beshaken up quickly, or this season is over in two more games for this team.
