Global temperatures 'to decrease'
By Roger Harrabin
BBC News environment analyst

La Nina caused some of the coldest temperatures in memory in China

Global temperatures this year will be lower than in 2007 due to the cooling effect of the La Nina current in the Pacific, UN meteorologists have said.

The World Meteorological Organisation's secretary-general, Michel Jarraud, told the BBC it was likely that La Nina would continue into the summer.

This would mean global temperatures have not risen since 1998, prompting some to question climate change theory.

But experts have also forecast a record high temperature within five years.

'Variability'

La Nina and El Nino are two great natural Pacific currents whose effects are so huge they resonate round the world.

El Nino warms the planet when it happens, La Nina cools it. This year, the Pacific is in the grip of a powerful La Nina.

It has contributed to torrential rains in Australia and to some of the coldest temperatures in memory in snow-bound parts of China.

LA NINA KEY FACTS
La Nina 2008 Forecast (Source: UK Met Office Hadley Centre)
La Nina translates from the Spanish as "The Child Girl"
Refers to the extensive cooling of the central and eastern Pacific
Increased sea temperatures on the western side of the Pacific means the atmosphere has more energy and frequency of heavy rain and thunderstorms is increased
Typically lasts for up to 12 months and generally less damaging event than the stronger El Nino

Mr Jarraud told the BBC that the effect was likely to continue into the summer, depressing temperatures globally by a fraction of a degree.

This would mean that temperatures have not risen globally since 1998 when El Nino warmed the world.

A minority of scientists question whether this means global warming has peaked and the earth has proved more resilient to greenhouse gases than predicted.

But Mr Jarraud insisted this was not the case and noted that 1998 temperatures would still be well above average for the century.

"When you look at climate change you should not look at any particular year," he said. "You should look at trends over a pretty long period and the trend of temperature globally is still very much indicative of warming."

"La Nina is part of what we call 'variability'. There has always been and there will always be cooler and warmer years, but what is important for climate change is that the trend is up."

Experts at the UK Met Office's Hadley Centre for forecasting in Exeter said the world could expect another record temperature within five years or less, probably associated with another episode of El Nino.

Can't believe that this has been posted for 4 days and none of the "The World is ending" crowd has chimed in.

Oh wait, I guess I can believe it.

"I am El Niño! That's Spanish for...... The Niño!!" (http://www.biggeekdaddy.com/humorpages/SNL/elnino.html)

Full transcript:

Anchor: Welcome to "WeatherScope". The biggest news this season, undoubtedly, the huge mass of warm Pacific water known as El Nino. Though it has caused torrential downpours in the Pacific region, El Nino has also dominated many tropical storms, preventing them from becoming hurricanes. In a dramatic development, the Weather Channel has captured the following satellite images of the mysterious phenomenon known as.. El Nino.

[ cut to El Nino standing in front of huge winds delivering his pitch in the style of a professional wrestler ]

El Nino: I am El Nino! All other tropical storms must bow before El Nino! Yo soy El Nino! For those of you who don't "habla Espanol", El Nino is Spanish for.. The Nino! To any of you hurricanes who are listening, step on up! Because nobody can take El Nino! I challenge any of you punk-*** tropical storms to a no-holds barred cage match! Any time! Any coast! I swear to God all Mighty it is time to pay the piper, 'cause El Nino's coming for ya! And it ain't gonna be pretty!

[ cut back to Anchor in the studio ]

Anchor: Obviously, El Nino issuing a challenge to all comers. Let's hear now from expert meteorologist and intercontinental Wrestling Federation champion, Ric Flair. El Nino, has some pretty strong words there, Rick, it looks like he's after you belt.

[ cut to Ric Flair rebutting El Nino's challenge ]

Ric Flair: El Nino, I've got one thing to say to you, brother! You may dominate weather fronts all along the Eastern seaboard brother, but you wouldn't last two seconds against me and Junkyard Dog, Nino! I don't speak Spanish, but I'm coming to your burrito to kick your butt-o, pal! Yeah, that's right!

[ El Nino suddenly crashes into the scene, as he and Ric Flair attempt to tear one another apart with various wrestling moves ]

Anchor: Ric Flair has applied the sleeper hold to El Nino! It's unbelievable! Ric Flair has subdued the powerful weather phenomenon known as El Nino! I think you can look for a return to colder weather and more storms in the Great Lakes region.

Announcer: November 3rd, watch WWF action when Hacksaw Jim Doogan takes on the Santa Ana Wind at the Indiana State Fairgrounds!

I watched an episode of the new Tracy Alman (sp?) last week. Was not very good so I doubt I watch it again.

However there was one part where she was playing Paulie Walnuts (from the sopranos) and when in character she says something about Global warming that made me laugh. I still see the advert for the show and they show that clip and I still laugh.

It is a little too adult for the board but it was still funny.

or prudes, not sure which.

Cajun if the article had said "world temp higher" you would have called it crap. You don't believe in global warming despite all the evidence that points to it and dismiss all articles setting it out. The second you see an article where a tempearature was lower, to you it proves there is no global warming.

But this is the facts, do you have another article saying the temp has gone up since 1998 ?

Global warming has happened before and it will happen again...so what?

It is the natural cycle of things. Maybe we are helping it along this time maybe not, but if the industrial revolution never happened, global warming would still happen without our meddling.

Besides, Mr Cowboy of the Great White North, I figure you would welcome a little warm up from the land of ice and snow.

First i didn't say it was crap. But at the same time, most of the global warming claims are crap.

The temp isn't going up.

25 years ago these same goofballs said that the world would end in 10 years because the oceans were going to dry up.

Pardon me while I don't take these nuckleheads seriously.

you mean like when you find an article that says it *is* happening you hold it up and go THERE! TOLDJA! kinda like you calling this crap yet asking for believe to your way while you make fun of the other?

i don't think either side is going to prove a point worth a flip either way with a newpaper article that only ratifies one side at the expense of the other.

Yawn, if you knew anything about where I live, you would realize that Vancouver does not get that much snow, it's like Seattle.

Ice, I have never held up an article re global warming. I know it is warmer than when I was younger, spring comes earlier and fall later. When I was young, I couldn't wear shorts after say September 15, now I can to early October. I couldn't wear them before say May 1 and now it is often by April 15.

It is clear we have sped up the process of warming, only a moron would deny that to be the case.

So, all historical perspective should be determined by your lifetime. In other words, the hundred years before your birth isn't important to this trend. If Canadian was colder than what he is now, it MUST be global warming.

And if temps have NOT gone up since in a decade, explain how we have sped up the process?

10 years with no increase. That's a lot of speed, or perhaps crack.

1st paragraph - yes. vancouver doesn't get much snow and the 2 times i was there i thought it was a great city. had a good time there.

2nd - my point is more these things are like a ping pong game. LOOK! in the last 6 months it got colder! is just as idiotic to say LOOK! the last decade got warmer! when the earth has been around for millions of years.

3rd paragraph. i guess i could say only a moron would take a small sampling of the overall history and declare an aboslute reason for the outcome but i don't want to be ... insulting?

yes it's getting warmer. did the planet ever do that before? oh, many times? yet this time it's our fault.

i don't deny we're not likely helping and can and SHOULD do more to work cooperatively with our environment. but despite my name i'm not going to tie myself to an iceberg demanding the world save itself from itself.

hey, it's gotten colder too - who did that? dinasor farts?

if our world were stable and still not forming islands outside of hawaii, still not having volcanic activity and tsunamis due to underground earthquakes and was a set motion of resources that never changed, THEN we can do more to attribute it's changes to our behavior. but everything happening now has happened before. the extreme "never been hotter!" than this decade has been disproven time and again.

only a ... agenda driven person ... would use part of the overall facts to come to an ultimate conclusion.

It sure looks like more and more scientists are showing some stones and are less willing to allow themselves to be intimidated by the PC crowd about so called Global Warming caused by humans.

FACT: we have had much warmer periods in the past and much colder periods in the past. MILLIONS of years before humans were even walking upright.

FACT: we have had solid temperature readings from a large part of the world with accurate thermometers for only 50 years or so. So those trying to claim that we really know how warm or cold it is beyond those 50 years are full of crap.

I don't think you can really guage the temperature over a 50 year span and make an accurate reading when the Earth has been around for millions of years. 50 years becomes a blip.

Secondly, as burm said (and how I loathe to agree with him......which might be a sign I am wrong on the issue of global warming), I question the accuracy of measuring temperatures in the past.... say, like 100 years ago.

Basically, I don't think there is conclusive evidence to say global warming is occuring.

But I don't think we could do wrong in taking some precautionary measures, etc. We should probably do it anyway, regardless if there is a consensus in global warming....(not saying that you, Cajun, are saying or implying anything differently)

I have long been for cleaning up the environment and doing things in a responsible way. The problem is the whack jobs that keep telling us that the world is coming to an end if my carbon footprint is too big.

Farting cows are on their enemy list. That says a lot right there. They are simply trying to use scare tactics to impede our individual rights.

But using scare tactics works so well in politics. I guess it just depends on how you feel about the specific topic on whether you agree with scare tactics or not.:D
