• Pick No. 17: Detroit Lions select Gosder Cherilus, T, Boston College
Pro analysis: With Mike Martz gone, the Lions have pledged to run in 2008. Rather than take a runner — say Illinois' Rashard Mendenhall — they took a needed blocker, tabbing BC's Cherilus. He should immediately displace the disappointing George Foster on the right side and open some serious holes. The question now is, will Detroit pick up someone more effective than Tatum Bell to run through those holes? Plenty of RBs are still available in the draft ... but so is Shaun Alexander.
College analysis: Cherilus was one of the rare offensive linemen that started every game during his four-year career. The Boston College product spent much of those four years protecting Matt Ryan. Now he joins his former teammate in the first round. Cherilus has the right size to be an offensive tackle and will bring a physical approach to the Lions' front wall.
45... Jordon Dizon LB Colorado
87... Andre Fluellen DT Florida State
92... From Cowboys Cliff Avril DE Purdue (DEtroit gives #11 and 2009 4th round pick)
111... Traded to Cowboys
136... Kenneth Moore WR Wake Forest
146... Jerome Felton FB Furman
216... Landen Cohen DT Ohio
218... Caleb Campbell SS Army
