Cowboys' Glenn done for season

12:44 PM CDT on Saturday, October 30, 2004

By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR / The Dallas Morning News

The Cowboys placed receiver Terry Glenn on injured reserve and released defenseive tackle Chad Eaton on Saturday.

The move ends Glenn's season.

Glenn has suffered from a sprained foot. The injury occured on his lone catch against Green Bay. Glenn said "it feels like my foot was chopped in half," after the game.

The Cowboys filled those two roster spots by promoting receivers Terrance Copper and Patrick Crayton from the practice squad to the active roster.

From the JJT report posted below it seems so. Copper and Crayton both added to active roster. I *HOPE* Crayton gets to return kicks and punts now that Ward becomes *gulp* too valuable as a WR.

Rolling eyes is right. We traded a WR for a WR so this post makes as much sense as all the rest of the whining.

I thought America represented the pull yourself up by the bootstrap mentality but I guess we are as whiny as we accuse the Euros of being.

Well Eaton was a let down. Shouldn't Wiley be following him out the door?

ya know jt, the way I see it, I'd really be more into watching this team with the young guys out there...even if playing them means sacrificing a win or two...

even the most optimistic fan can't possibly see this team being a factor in the playoffs...that said, for me, I'd rather see if we can uncover a few diamonds in the rough...

Losing Glenn is a bummer because he really was doing a great job...but guys like Eaton....and that big waste of space playing next to him, wearing #75...and a few others, are just taking up roster space.

Maybe it's because we are more hardcore fans that we wouldn't have a problem seeing this team sacrifice a win or two now, in order to evaluate some players for our future... I suppose Jerry the marketing guy knows that the more "surface" level fan will be attracted if we post a good record by playing oldtimers...

But for me, if I knew the game tomorrow would be one with a few young guys playing, I'd be more into it than knowing I am going to turn on the tube and see Eddie George, Dedric Ward and Marcellus Wiley...

Like many of you, I am now starting to think that we need to use this year to evaluate what we have as far as the young guys go. I don't like to give up hope on any season but maybe these young players could surprise.
I mean, why keep playing some of the older guys when we could be giving "hard-time" football lessons to the young crew. I am not saying to start all rookies and get someone killed in the process, but the ones that you hope are the future.
If we do this, we could end up with a 7-15 pick in the first round next year and maybe trade one or the other of the first rounders for two or three picks. With that, plus the experience the young guys could get from this year, I believe that would speed up the process of long gevity of being in the playoffs.

Martinez struck by ball thrown during parade

BOSTON (AP) - Hundreds of thousands of Red Sox fans jammed streets and the banks of the Charles River on Saturday to watch a parade many had begun to doubt they would ever witness: a toast to a World Series champion team.

The team that last won the World Series in 1918 was given a victory procession on land and water, winding from the streets near Fenway Park past Boston Common and City Hall and then onto the Charles aboard 17 of the amphibious vehicles known since World War II as "ducks."

Pedro Martinez was hit in the forehead by a baseball thrown from the banks of the Charles while riding on a boat, but the star pitcher did not appear seriously injured.

Some fans stood on the streets and river banks - in places as many as 10 to 25 people deep - while others stood atop buildings or waved from windows as the team rode past.

World Series MVP Manny Ramirez waved a sign that a fan handed him: "Jeter is playing golf today. This is better!" a reference to Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter. Other fans tossed brooms in tribute to the four-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Officials extended the 3-mile parade into the Charles River because of projections that as many as 5 million people would pack the city.

"I've been waiting for this all my life," said Rich Brantley, 47, of Milford, Conn., who traveled through the night to arrive around 7 a.m. "It's one of the biggest days of my life other than when I got married and had my kids."

Police said 10 people were arrested, 12 people were taken to hospitals for treatment of minor injuries and 30 people were treated on the street.

Martinez looked stunned when hit by the ball, putting his hand to his forehead. The ball was later seen floating in the water as the boat continued down the river for the final leg of the parade.

Jim Averill, 42, of Boston, said the ball was thrown at a high speed from the river bank. He said pitcher Derek Lowe tried to catch it before it struck Martinez.

"It hit him and it flew up about 15 feet and fell into the water," he said.

Wild cheers greeted the Red Sox players when they arrived at Fenway Park before the parade. At an impromptu rally on the field, manager Terry Francona said his team always had what it took to win even if his scruffy players - who dubbed themselves "idiots" - didn't always look serious.

"They may not wear their hair normal, they many not dress normal, but they play the game as good as you can," Francona said.

During the parade, several players hoisted signs that said "Idiots Rule!"

That the World Series victory came at the expense of the Yankees, whom the Red Sox beat in a historic comeback in the playoffs, made it that much sweeter.

"Every Red Sox fan from now on can walk into Yankee stadium with their head high," catcher Jason Varitek said.

Because so many fans were expected in Boston to celebrate the team's World Series triumph, the plan for the parade did not include any stops or a staged rally.

"I understand the problem - where do you stick 5 million people?" fan Dave Henry said.

Authorities would not let fans stuff themselves into City Hall Plaza, where the New England Patriots held rallies after they won the Super Bowl twice in the past three years.

"Let's face it, you get a crowd that size and it's very unpredictable," Police Commissioner Kathleen O'Toole told The Associated Press on Friday. "One of the reasons we're not having one particular rally location is that we're concerned that it could be a dangerous situation."

"It's going to be a great parade," O'Toole said. "If they're along a long parade route, they're going to have a better vantage point than being at a rally that's potentially dangerous where they can't see a thing. I think it's a great thing, and I hope tomorrow is an exciting and safe day for everyone."

The theme of the parade was "We kept the faith, now let's keep the peace," in hopes of preventing rowdiness or violence, like the deadly frenzy that erupted after Boston's Game 7 win over the Yankees in the playoffs. An Emerson College student was killed by a pepper-spray pellet fired by police trying to control the crowd of 80,000 revelers.

Pedro Martinez was hit in the forehead by a baseball thrown from the banks of the Charles while riding on a boat, but the star pitcher did not appear seriously injured.

"I have a little headache, but I'm OK," Martinez said after the parade ended Saturday at Fenway Park.

Martinez looked stunned when hit by the ball, putting his hand to his forehead. The ball was later seen floating in the water as the boat continued down the river for the final leg of the parade.

I agree. And with this much of the season left, we could have a very good idea of needs for next year. If no one pans out, even Henson, we could look to make trades to accumilate more picks.
Kieth Davis could be our answer at safety. Crayton or Copper could be the next good WR. Henson might be able to do even more than Aikman has. Or they all could be busts. I just know that I am ready to find out!

At least if we went into evaluate mode this year someone would actually be evaluating.

How long did Goodrich stay on this team?

We went into evaluate mode through 3 straight 5-11 seasons and failed to learn a damn thing. Parcells learned more from a season he didn't participate in (ie 2002) than Jerry and Camps staff did in 00-02.

So, who is the future at QB? We don't know, we didn't have a running game so we have no clue!

Playoffs!?!?! Playoffs?!?!
I'm thinking its going to be tough for us to get 5 wins.
I'm thinking that Buffalos draft pick of ours is going to be a top 3 and our regular pick is going to be a top 10.

let's face, we suck this year pretty badly and last offseason set us back at least a full year, maybe two because we did NOTHING! We drafted NOTHING. We signed NOONE!
Even the few good players we do have are playing horribly. Sometimes I hate being a realist but I look at our remaining schedule and I have a hard time picking out wins except for Washington.

Hate to say I toldja so I won't. But I have always professed that injury prone players never really lose that title. Perhaps it isn't fair to blame a player for his injuries. Those are things he can't control assuming he is working out hard in the offseason. But regardless, this is just a fact of life. It's called genetics and certain players will tend to be healthier regardless of how much he works out in the offseason. Anytime, you take a player who has a history of injuries in the past, rest assured that those injuries will be inflamed again or will manifest themselves in others areas of the body. Look at Joey Galloway; the same thing happened to him.

Likewise, healthy players tend to remain healthy even if they incur a recent injury. It's genetics. Players like Jerry Rice and Curtis Martin are not just hardworkers who can play with pain, they are genetically gifted as well. This is why I'm always against drafting and signing players who have a history of injuries. It always comes back to bite you in the ***.

It's nice to have a glass half-full outlook and realize its a good opportunity to evaluate some of the younger players at WR. Altough, I am not too excited at getting the chance to evaluate 7th round/undrafted free agents at WR. However, Crayton could susprise I guess.

Be nice to get Morgan back and see what we got in him.

Keyshawn and Witten are really going to have to step up.

Have you not watched any of the Cowboy games this year? Evaluating the young guys IS option B. Parcells option A is playing the guys that won't be here in 1-2 years.

He must be very badly injured. He's played great so far this year. I hate to hear more bad news.

Now if this had only happen when Bryant was here so we could have gotten a real look of him starting before we went and traded him. The guy got scr*wed when Glenn came to town. That great rookie season then one of Bill's guys comes in and pushes him out of the starting lineup. A week after we finally get rid of him, that spot reopens.

But hell no, that isn't the Dallas Tunaboy's philosophy--our philosphy is play the old guys till they're run into the ground {Unless you're a lifelong Cowboy like Emmitt, then just get rid of him}..meanwhile giving none of the young guys any expeirance in the process, so when they are needed they won't be ready.

I swear, it's almost like a consipracy how bad things have gone around here.

Godfather: Go in there Bill, make them think you're really trying for the first year.
Bill Parcells: Then what, Don?
Godfather: Then rip them apart from the inside out and destroy that Dallas team once and for all!
Bill Parcells: {Chuckles} That Jerry Jones is such a dufus, he ain't ever going to see it coming either.
Godfather: {Methodically rubs his hands together} That is the plan, that is the plan.
Bill Parcells: Can I expect any help?
Godfather: Yes, yes, we will be calling up Mo from Detroit and our new guy Payton from here in the big apple.
Bill Parcells: And players?
Godfather: {Roars with laughter} The entire 1998 Jets offense!
Bill Parcells: {Laughs} America's Team...try more like America's Dumba**es!
Godfather: Immediatly upon arrival-
Bill Parcells: The removal of their lone remaining star, Emmitt Smith.
Godfather: Without him they will lose their identity. Meanwhile we will return glory and identity to the Giants by drafting college sensation, Eli Manning.
Bill Parcells: ...
Godfather: Do not worry, Tuna, we shall simply groom him as we wait upon your triuphant return to the meadowlands.
Bill Parcells: {Smirks and starts planning his airport meeting with Jerry Jones...}

FB - Richie Anderson

Final Record 8-8--Afterall, can't leave us with too high of a draft pick upon his departure, lol.

Maybe after Eddie picks up 70 yards on 25 carries he can join Eaton.
70 yars on 25 carries that is pretty genrous I figured no more along the 2.8ypc like some off his other games

25 carries fo 60 yards is more like it

Someone send our fave Terry Glenn fan a bouquet of flowers to New England quick.
Thanks JT. :o I've been preparing myself for this all week, and after I read up on the injury, and how other NFL players fared with it, the prognosis was pretty clear. Today I went out and bought myself something REAL expensive - that always helps a little.

What a bummer for Terry, just as things were getting back on track for him, and of course, a major loss for the team.

Just out of curiosity. Just who was it tackling T on that play last week? I got a voodoo doll ready to paint a face on.

Thanks, Mike.

The only thing's gonna cheer me up tho, is if this team turns things around, and makes a run for the playoffs....I can suck up losing my very favorite player, but it'll be a lot easier if over the next ten weeks, we're competitive.

I hope you have more room on your credit card. Me thinks you're going to be going on a prolonged shopping spree.

Pedro Martinez was hit in the forehead by a baseball thrown from the banks of the Charles

The guy who threw that baseball will be named in tomorrow's newspaper, then announced on ESPN at 7pm....word is the Yankees are on the phone trying to sign him.

Oh, it's roster churning time again. Maybe, just maybe, the onset of injuries to key players and vets since Sept. mean it's time to fish or cut bait with some 25 and under players. By Thanksgiving we're going to know much more about this team's future -and I dont mean the 2005 postseason.
