NFL looks into activities of Dolphins' Will Allen

NFL security had Dolphins cornerback Will Allen on its radar before he allegedly pulled a gun on a man in a dispute over money May 16 in Davie, a source with knowledge of the investigation said Tuesday.

The NFL had been alerted when a Detroit bank told the league of Allen's involvement in a suspiciously large amount of money being wired to South Florida, the source said.

The Davie Police Department still is investigating the confrontation. The alleged victim said the argument was over money loaned to Allen to cover gambling debts; Allen contends the money was for an investment.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello declined to comment Tuesday night but said "the matter continues to be under review."

Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said the team had no comment. Allen's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, did not return a call from The Post.

When Davie police completes its investigation, the findings will be forwarded to the state attorney's office, which will decide if a firearm charge is brought against Allen, 29.

Sources said the monetary dispute appears to be a civil matter. The other man's name has not been released by police because he is considered the victim in an ongoing investigation. Their statements have not been made public.

"Apparently there's conflict between the two parties over monies either invested or loaned," Davie police Lt. William Coyne said. "There are some cancelled checks that are in one party's possession that have not been turned in.

"If one is alleging that someone loaned money, then there should be some sort of paper trail."

Regardless of whether Allen is found guilty of a crime, he could be punished by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell if the league determines the debts were from gambling.

The league's gambling policy outlines four "types of conduct detrimental to the NFL and professional football that call for serious penalties."

The first three deal with betting on NFL games. The fourth cites "associating with gamblers or with gambling activities in a manner tending to bring discredit to the NFL."

"Any such conduct may result in severe penalties, up to and including a fine and/or suspension from the NFL for life," the NFL gambling policy states.

The incident involving Allen took place in the parking lot of a Bed, Bath & Beyond on University Drive. Both men went to the Davie police station to file voluntary reports. Allen arrived with Dolphins security investigator Stuart Weinstein.

Allen is entering his eighth NFL season and third with the Dolphins. He finished third in tackles last season with 62.

He had one interception and a team-high 14 passes defensed.

Allen also recorded two sacks and forced two fumbles.

This gun toting thing has gotten out of hand. I've always been a stauch supporter of gun rights. I've had permits to carry guns and was a MP. So I take that stuff seriously. But this kind of thing gives a lot of ammunition to the opposition for carrying guns. And they have a pretty good point with this kind of behavior. Not saying he's guilty. Not saying he was carrying. Just that this kind of situation comes up too frequently.

A potential Jason Taylor for Lito Sheppard deal makes even more sense for both the Dolphins and Eagles now.

We'll see if either side is smart enough to do it.....
