AUSTIN, Texas - Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul will end his campaign Thursday night and announce a new effort to help elect libertarian-leaning Republicans to public office around the country.

Campaign spokesman Jesse Benton said the announcement, expected during a rally coinciding with the Texas GOP State Convention in Houston, was "not a disappointment at all. I think this is really exciting."

Paul's announcement will be a formality.

The 72-year-old Texas congressman won few delegates during the Republican primaries. But he raised millions of dollars online and developed a large, grass-roots following among those who backed his call for ending the war in Iraq and smaller government at home.

Supporters have pushed for a speaking role for him at the Republican National Convention in September in St. Paul, Minn.

Paul has said he won't endorse Sen. John McCain, the likely GOP presidential nominee. Benton said that was unlikely to change

Here is something interesting. Remember people talking about nadar possibly taking away dem votes.

Then some said Barr would take away some repub votes.

Most agreed it might not be enough to do much, some said it could.

Imagine if some of the Paul fans shifted to barr. Sure many might be batty, not all, but they have been a very loyal group and have raised a great deal of money.

They might help bar enough to make a difference IF...a big IF some think this race really is going to be close at the end.

OMG I would absolutely LOVE that! :D

Funny you should mention Nader.

I just saw a old cartoon about him the other day and thought man I had forgot he was even still in it.

And that's a good thing. :p:

They knew they had no shot and I really think Ron Paul is doing his best to try and open some eyes and make the current FAKE conservatives be held accountable. Even if he gets a few people to open their eyes, to vote for a true conservative, to hold the neocons accountable in the smallest degree...he has done his job.
