TIM RUSSERT DIES FROM APPARENT HEART ATTACK
By CHARLES HURT

Tim Russert
June 13, 2008 --
Tim Russert, NBC journalist and political heavyweight host of "Meet the Press," has died after collapsing at NBC's Washington news bureau, a source said. He was 58 years old.
Russert, who rose from the inside world of politics where he was former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo's press secretary and one-time chief of staff to the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, was able to successfully cross over to political journalism and rise to become one of its leading lights.
In his role as host of the seminal Sunday morning political program "Meet the Press" - which he took over in 1991 - he became renowned for his hard-nosed interviews where he frequently cornered some of Washington's cagiest political figures with tough questions.

Kind of shocks you to see someone of that age die from a heart attack. I know I know he was no spring chicken, but still.

RIP.

Wow. That's sad news.

He seemed like a likeable guy.

58 is not that old these days.

Yes, 58 is very close to my parents' ages.

Sad news.

And Walter Cronkite still lives.

He'll outlive 'em all.

Sad news.

My folks are in their 60's and act like they are much younger and take care of themselves. 58 is not that old these days when life expectancy continues to rise.

Myself I'm on the George Burns health plan. Smoking cigars, drinking and hanging out with young women. The man lived to be over 100. :laugh2:

I was agreeing with you, since I do not consider myself very old.

A lot of these TV "journalists" or commentators are really entertainers/instigators who are prone to hyberbole and can be annoying.

Russert was an excellent interviewer who had a disarming, pleasant personality and demeanor. A good newsman.

This is a huge loss for that industry and specifically for NBC, not to mention his family.

Indeed. And he absolutely adored politics. You could just see it in his face and he was REALLY looking forward to this election season.

I'm stunned.

Loved his political coverage.

Huge loss for NBC.

And his family...to say the least.

NBC as Brokaw said will not be the same.

58 is way too young...

RIP Tim.

Dang! I really liked Tim Russert. Was one of the good guys. Even though everyone knew what his political leanings were, he always conducted fair and balanced interviews and gave both sides. This guy will be missed.

RIP TIM.

He was one of my favorite reporters to listen to when he got on a rant. His questions pulled no punches and he made no apologies for it.

R.I.P.

Russert is one of the only guys I actually watched. He didnt run a shout show, he just ran a very informative show.

I dont think NBC can replace someone as valuable as him.

Fifty eight is a relatively longer lifespan. One of my friends died of a heart attack at age 32. He was overweight and lost 100 lbs on the Atkins diet, but just suddenly collapsed a died like Russert.

Saw him speak at a fund raiser in NY years ago...he was who we all saw on TV...he mingled afterwards...and was the same bright, witty, guy we all had the pleasure to watch for years.

RIP

Look at that runner- Jim Fixx, right?
keeled over with no warning at all. Look at the athletes that just drop dead.
Not so strange.

Jeez. I had just become a fan of his. That's too bad. RIP Tim.

I figure the conservatives were mad at him some of the time, the liberals were mad at him some of the time, which probably means he was pretty much middle of the road... I don't like political talk shows as a rule, but I could tolerate his better than most...

The coolest thing about Russert was that he had a fictional relative on the TV show "Homicide: Live On The Streets", Megan Russert... he did the occasional cameo on that show...

I watched a lot of the Russert talk last night on TV and am still in disbelief that he has passed. He was such a good guy and really enjoyed his work. I'll miss him like everyone else.

Like most folks, I was surprised and saddened by the news of his sudden passing. It is a sad event and I certainly feel for his family. I should note that I also very much enjoyed his work.

But I am a little surprised by just how much attention his passing received on the cable news networks. I don't mean to be crass, and I mean absolutely no disrespect to the man, but the news coverage - particularly on cable (and even on the NFL network) - of his passing seems overthetop to me. I can't help thinking that he, a newsman, would be embarrassed by the level of coverage his media colleagues have given this story.

He has done a bunch of pieces for nfl films. Lots of stuff about the bills and their agony in the 90s and the history of the team.

Russert is one of the few guys who actually gave Ralph some exposure (which should serve as an example of just how much pull this otherwise unassuming man really had)- the rest of the corporate media has just ignored Nader completely.

Russert will be missed.
