Satellite Internet

We are about to move into a "new" house. But it is in a rural area where DSL or cable internet is not available. Does anyone here have experience with satellite internet? How does it compare?

i've heard its good for checking email and casual viewing of the internet...not much else but that was 4-5 years ago, times might have changed...might not though

i have heard it is expensive, not as fast as cable/dsl , dont really
know if all that is true.
you might check on an air card from your cell phone company.
i have an alltel card and it works ok when i am traveling. not cheap but
better than no internet.

Can say the same thing about dial up. I would rather not have internet at home than to go back to dial up. Most web sites today would take 30 minutes to load with dial up...lol

I have WildBlue...

It is MUCH better than dial-up, but don't expect T1 speeds or upper end DSL...

You can surf the net with no problems anywhere you want to go...

WildBlue has three plans at $49, $69 and $79 a month...

I have the $49 plan...

If you are going to get DirecTV they will bundle WildBlue in for $39, $59 and $69...

just read that there is a limit on how much data can go through the network, from 500 to 2 gb...so it seems its still for email and casual browsing

You will get comparative speeds to most wifi. Though realistically with sprint I have used it vs dial up and it is pretty good. I think Sat Internet would be a little faster. Cable will slow down if you get too many people at the same time; Sat used to be that way but I understand they have enough capacity that now its pretty fast all the time. DSL is best of course.

in IL that couldn't be farther then true. all my neighbors have cable and we all have xbox live and we never see a dip in performance (my house alone has 3 xbox 360 2 are usually up at the same time), DSL seems to lag and lose connection alot and Satalite is no where to be found

I have had Directv for many years. I just went to thier web site to check availability of wildblue. They say it is not available in my area....However, if I check the wildblue web site it says its available. I think wildblue is the way I am going. Thanks for the info

My kids play Wii over the internet all of the time on WildBlue...

Satellite isn't perfect, but it isn't dial-up either...

I would much rather have DSL or cable modem, but it's the price I pay for living on four acres in a country neighborhood... :D

Im with you on the dial-up. I am actually suprised it is still offered. Hopefully soon DSL and Cable will be available everywhere

Well, hopefully you won't have any problems. We had Wildblue for two years and my Wild blue cratered a few months ago and they wanted to charge me about $75,000.00 for a service call or I could sign up for 40 more years and they would come out for free. Luckily in my rural area outside of College Station we now have a local provider (I'm sure they're everywhere now) and our signal comes from their tower instead of a satellite. I pay the same as Wild Blue $49.99 but this is twice as fast and my signal doesn't go out every time there's rain or a heavy dew. Also I have several friends that had Wild Blue and we all had problems with wireless routers hooked up to it. All of us were constantly having to reset the router. I don't know of anyone that didn't have that problem. Wildblue told us for a year they knew it was an issue and they were working to resolve it. It was never resolved that I know of.

Had Directv - which is pretty much the same situation. Same basic tech. A few tweaks. The longest I ever lost signal was about 5 minutes during a real bad snowstorm.
