Attorney: Ex-Bengal Henry is destitute
From Wire Reports
Wednesday, July 09, 2008
Despite making about $2.5 million since 2005 as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals, Chris Henry is so broke he wants taxpayers to pay for a record of his trial.
"He's broke," said Perry Ancona, the former wide receiver's attorney said Tuesday, July 8. "He doesn't have any money to pay for a transcript."
Ancona filed a motion asking for taxpayers to pay for a written transcript of Henry's trial. Henry was arrested after a March 31 incident and charged with criminal damaging and assault.
A judge threw out the criminal damaging charge, saying Cincinnati prosecutors couldn't prove the allegation. A mistrial was declared last week on the assault charge when jurors couldn't come to a unanimous verdict.
When the trial ended, jurors said they voted 6-2 to acquit Henry.
But prosecutors said Tuesday they would retry Henry on the misdemeanor count. Henry's trial was set for Monday.
Henry signed a five-year, $6 million contract after being drafted in 2005.
He received about $1 million to sign plus an average of just over $500,000 for the first three years. He was to be paid $520,000 this year, but the team released him after his arrest.
Despite that, Ancona said Henry, who has been suspended by the NFL, is destitute. "He has no funds whatsoever and can't even meet his current obligations," Ancona told the judge.
Henry's $360,000 Kentucky house was auctioned in May when he failed to pay the mortgage. Henry's SUV was repossessed last month.

These players make so much money, why are they making payments on anything??? His house was 360k and he had a 1 mil signing bonus. An SUV is what 20-30 thousand and he was making 500k a year, come on man.

$360K won't get anything in NYC. Maybe a 3 bedroom condo in one of the poorer neighborhoods.
It's not like Henry's spending on million dollar homes. The price of his home is reasonable.
Don't forget ... his agent gets 15%, and I'm sure others are taking a cut of his money. Then he's taxed on the full amount. He'll be lucky to see a quarter of that $1 million signing bonus.

So many people live on credit, best thing my folks ever taught me was pay cash and pay it off as quickly as you can. I own everything outright and I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I had to make payments every month on my cars or my house. That sounds really stressful to me.

I don't feel sorry for the guy, but I do have a problem with the prosecutor going after him in a second trial over a misdemeanor. The first trial was hung in his favor 6-2, sounds like they need to let him go instead of wasting more of the tax payers money.

Sure he will have less than the total contract pays out. I don't know if his agent gets 15%. It is probably less, but not much less. Even at 15% Henry should see about half of that $1 million signing bonus.
A big factor for his money woes is probably his legal expenses. Those can mount up fast especially when you are constantly in trouble like Henry has been. If he led a different off the field life he would probably still be in good shape financially. Missing half a season means missing half of his income for that year. Stay out of trouble and you get paid and don't have to pay a lot to lawyers.

A few quick fleeting thoughts raced through my mind when reading this article and posts. It would take too long to explain them.
lol
I'll try to make it brief and to the point.
#1 Man- it would actually be alot of fun to go through that kind of money atleast once in a lifetime. Everyone should get a chance to do so!
#2 As someone smarter than myself has mentioned prior, why have payments on anything you don't have to. That's just stressful.
#3 Logically, only a fool can call someone else stupid.
#4 That dude is stupid! lol
#5 Bring him on into Dallas? Ironically like former Cinnci teammate Chad Johnson said, might as well go ahead and buy the ring.
#6 If Dallas signed him, the Cowboys would be considered a laughing stock of convicts in the NFL....actually we already are being boated out to sea on that "ship" so why not?
....oh and one more thing...if I personally had that kind of money, I don't believe I would ever be broke again, even in TEN lifetimes!

Exactly. I don't have an ounce of sorrow for him. Give most people his talent and that money and they wouldn't piss it away.
I think a couple of talents that are often over looked are mental and emotional(or maturity). Well maybe not overlooked, but just are not viewed as a talent such as speed or power.
Mental and emotional talents are harder to scout. They are harder to predict as far as growth and improvement. They are harder to determine their impact on the player and their future. Henry had questions about his mental makeup and maturity coming out of college.
When I say mental I don't really mean smarts although that does play a part. Some guys have it between the ears and other don't. That is why you have some guys overcome a lack of speed or size while others who have all the physical tools fail.
Some guys are the total package. Most guys that are the best in the game have what it takes upstairs. Henry is not one of those. If you gave me his physical tools I would probably do alright in the NFL. Give them to someone else and they may end up on the HoF. I agree that most won't piss it away like Henry.

No thanks necessary; your mere presence at CZ is thanks enough. We see the same thing happen with lottery winners. Frequently, even big $ lottery winners wind up broke.
People who win the lottery - and a lot of kids who make it big in sports - have no concept of how much money they actually won or, in Henry's case, are making. To them, the million or ten million is an endless sea of money that will never end. They don't have a clue that the money is finite and won't last if they don't take care of it.

You will have to rephrase that. How many of you if you were reckless and ran afoul of the law causing you to lose your job could afford to make all your payments for 6 months? And of course we would all have to be paid just as well as Henry in this scenario to make it close to equal.

And it don't help none that many of these athletes have been coddled and protected by schools/coaches from the outside world.
You see, they were BMOC, had all the girls they wanted, were immune from meaninful schoolwork and were told they'd succeed no matter what real-world skills they'd need -- like balancing a checkbook or getting a financial services expert (not the agent, plealse, not the agent).
Makes me wish I had been a full-time jock, but then, again, I would be broke today instead of living high on the hog with my head-injury checks.

*** was he doing with his money.I could be a complete whore with that much money and still have a lot left.More and more I find myself agreeing with you sac. It's real simple, once you have money don't spend it until you have invested it first. Make your money work for you so you don't have to work for your money. Then, once your money is working for you, spend some. Hell spend a lot. It will be there.
