LOS ANGELES - Actress Estelle Getty has died at the age of 84.

Her son, Carl Gettleman, says the co-star of the TV show "The Golden Girls" died early Tuesday at home in Los Angeles. Gettleman says she suffered from advanced dementia.

The diminutive actress spent 40 years struggling for success before landing the role of a lifetime in 1985, playing the sarcastic octogenarian Sophia on "The Golden Girls."

Man ....... I hate to hear that.

Same here...I still watch the occasional episode. They usually have them on here on one of the channels.

I always thought she was the funniest of the golden girls.

Great show for most of its' run...

Little known trivia...

Bea Arthur who played Dorothy, is actually older than Estelle Getty... who played her mother, Sophia...

That's too bad. I really like her. The Golden Girls just won some lifetime award a few weeks ago at the TV Land awards. It kinda hokey, the awards show but it was cool to see some of the old actors. Anyway, the three other girls were there and accepted the award but they never mentioned Getty. I thought maybe it was because they had a falling out or whatever.

They never said anything about her being ill.

Well, RIP, and keep 'em laughing up there.

Weird coincidence. Rue McClanahan was on the 3rd hour of the Today Show just this morn.

I didn't turn up the sound, but obvious the news hadn't reached her yet, they were yucking it up too much.

Condolences to the family.
