MARSHALL MEETS WITH GOODELL (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/07/24/marshall-meets-with-goodell/)

Posted by Michael David Smith on July 24, 2008, 8:49 a.m.

Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall’s repeated legal troubles have gotten him a meeting with the commissioner.

The Denver Post is reporting that Marshall met with Roger Goodell for two and a half hours last week (http://www.denverpost.com/commented/ci_9976755?source=commented-broncos), and that Goodell will announce next week whether and for how long Marshall will be suspended for violations of the league’s personal-conduct policy.

The meeting included not just Marshall and Goodell, but also Marshall’s lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, and longtime Broncos receiver Rod Smith. It’s not clear what role Smith played in the meeting, but it’s certainly safe to say that Goodell wishes Marshall would conduct himself the way Smith always did — as a professional on and off the field. Smith is expected to formally retire today.

(UPDATE: A reader pointed out that Smith pleaded guilty to verbal harassment in 2000 (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4191/is_20020927/ai_n10009771), and was sentenced to anger-management counseling sessions. He has spoken publicly about how counseling helped him.)

Marshall has not been convicted of a crime since he was drafted in April of 2006, but he has been arrested multiple times, and when Goodell announced his new personal-conduct policy, he said, “It’s not enough to simply avoid being found guilty of a crime.” So league discipline is a near certainty; the only issue is whether Marshall was able to convince Goodell to be lenient.

Given the severity of recent punishments, it would seem likely that Marshall could face some "time off for bad behaviour".

On the field, Marshall reminds me of a young T.O, circa 1997.. he looks the part, has speed, breaks tackles, great hands. Before all these legal troubles, I thought that he'd be a top 5 receiver in the league this year, especially entering camp as the unquestionable #1 receiver.

He is not nearly as intelligent as T.O., trust me. Not nearly.

If he had a face-to-face meeting with Goodell, I can assure you he's in for a suspension. I can almost see the smug look on his face as he's talking to Goodell, proving once again that he just doesn't get it.

He just does not seem to get it. As for the comparison to T.O., he may have talent, but he's not terribly smart.

As long as we're on the subject of Goodell, what is this noise about him contacting Ted Thompson and urging him to get the Favre situation resolved quickly?

What business is it of his? If the Packers and Favre want to drag this out all season, that's their right. Seriously, resolve it quickly so Goodell can feel better? Give me a break -- it's called gamesmanship, and sometimes you need to hold out to make the your opponent blink.

Hey Goodell, **** off and mind your own business.
