Check the bios and make sure it's enabled.

Have you been inside of it for any reason? It's possible you could have disconnected the ribbon cable.

no i haven't been inside it. what is the bios?

The setup for the motherboard. It's where you configure the hardware of the computer.

Usually you get in to it when you hit f2 or f10 or something like that when it's booting.

I had the same thing happen to my computer. I couldn't figure out the problem but one day it came back by itself.

If your D drive shows up when u open my computer then the bios should be ok.

DId you recently do the service pack 3 update? If so...that might be a issue

Also try going to the desktop....rightclick on my computer...go to propertise....and window will open .....go to the tab called hardware.....in that window click on the tab that says device manager....

Once that window opens up.....you will see all the devices on your computer....expand the cd/dvd icon and delete the cd/dvd drive you have.....reboot the comp and when you log back in the comp should find that device again and reinstall the drivers.

sometimes that will work .....


I had the same issue months ago on a comp and the fix was to buy a new dvd player.....

I had the same issue months ago on a comp and the fix was to buy a new dvd player..... hey mash! what's going on man? do i need a disc to reinstall the driver cause if so i'm screwed?

No....xp will pick it up automatically.......rarely do u need drivers for cd or dvd players.

if you go to start -> run -> compmgmt.msc and then to disk management is there a CD drive listed there?

one thing to try is start -> run -> regedit and navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Look for UpperFilters and Lowerfilters on the right pane and delete them both if present, then start-> run -> devmgmt.msc, delete the CD drive from the device manager and reboot.

Sorry Rampage for the late reply....


You dont have to uninstall service pack 3 if you installed it that long ago and had no issues

Im lost into why windows can see the cd/dvd-rom but not play it....might be a bad player then......is it very old?

I know I had to replace my recently....but it did alot of work burning stuff for me.

Did you try to see if you replaced that player with another if the problem still existed?
