BLUE MOUND, Texas — When two gunmen smashed through the glass front door of her suburban Fort Worth home, Kellie Hoehn didn't think twice.
The 34-year-old mother of two grabbed a shotgun that had been pointed at her face early Wednesday, starting a struggle that ended with one intruder killed with his own weapon and another in the hospital.
"I wasn't going to let them get to my babies," she said, recalling the moment when she pushed up the muzzle of the shotgun, pointing it away from her children's rooms.
Although the intruders told her to keep quiet, she screamed for her husband. She told her 12-year-old son, who was awakened by the sound of the shattering glass front door, to get his 5-year-old sister and hide.
"It was like a horror movie," her husband, 32-year-old Keith Hoehn, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "I thought I was a dead man. We're fighting for our lives."
With Kellie Hoehn clinging to the weapon's muzzle, her husband tackled the man who held the shotgun. She knocked the intruder in the head with a jar candle, giving her husband a chance to wrest the shotgun.
By then the tussle had spilled out onto the front lawn. Keith Hoehn shot one of the men who had a pistol, police said. Wounded, that man ran away.
Then the intruder who initially had the shotgun charged Keith Hoehn.
Kellie Hoehn told The Dallas Morning News that she screamed at her husband, "Shoot him, shoot him, shoot him."
Her husband fired the shotgun and the man fell to the ground. Then the shot man lunged a second time.
"Well, I shot him again, and I guess that was it," Keith Hoehn said.
Dakota Scott Benoit, 20, of Richland Hills, was pronounced dead at a hospital. John Garland Pierson, 25, of Haltom City, was in critical condition and in police custody at the hospital.
"I am not happy that someone is dead," Kellie Hoehn said. "But I am glad that my family is alive."
Police said Pierson was shot in the left arm and the bullet pierced his diaphragm and other organs but his condition was improving. He will face charges of burglary of habitation with intent to commit another felony, police said.
Investigators say the couple were just defending their family and probably won't be charged.

Wow, what a happy event! Here's hoping we all get to shoot someone in our own home! I feel for the family, but if this is designed to encourage me to load my shotgun and put it close by, it's not working. All this tells me is that this couple's neighbourhood might not be a good place to live.

Honestly, PP, I don't know where they live, but it is common these days for these type of home invasions to occur in upscale neighborhoods.
Some friends of my family were slaughtered in Shreveport by this very method a few years back. They lived in an extremely nice area.
They usually use one of three methods. They knock on the door and if someone opens they force their way in. They either break a large window or door and storm in or they wait outside the garage and as you pull in they rush the car as the door closes behind them. It must be a terrifying ordeal...
Now that I'm in the process of moving back to the big city, my loaded guns will be a little more accessible than before to protect my family...

The only thing it should tell you is to be very careful.
Here in Tucson in a very upscale neighborhood a man broke into a home and slaughtered the elderly couple who lived there. They were known philanthropists who did so much good in Tucson. Their loss can't be measured. My daughter's optometrist told us that they had gone to an underprivileged school locally with him to do eye exams. They paid for eyeglasses for dozens of kids whose families could not afford them.
We all need to be careful. These people fought back and lived. Many will fight back and die anyway. This story isn't about encouraging you to load your shotgun and keep it close by. It's about a couple who fought back against armed intruders and survived.

I recall as a boy an incident with an intruder. I suppose I was 10 or so. My Dad was gone a lot in those days. My Mom was alone with just us and so, one evening there happened to be a prowler outside the house. This was in Baytown Texas. I recall looking out the window and seeing this fella shooting out the flood lights around the house. My Mom got on the phone right away and called the police. She then grabbed my Dads 1911 and started trying to load it. She new nothing of how to load the pistol so I did it. My mother wanted it back but I knew that she would likely shoot herself rather then the intruder so I kept it. She litterally had no clue as to how to use a firearm. On the other hand, we were raised and taught how to handle firearms. We hunted and practiced a goodly amout when we were younger. I had shot my fathers Colt before but only under his supervision and only once before. .45 is a large caliber for a young boy to handle so by no means was I an expert but I knew how to load and fire the weapon if I had to. I remember standing in the living room entry while the prowler tried to get past the dead bolt on the entry way door. I don't know what I would have done if he had managed to gain entry. I remember being very affraid of what could happen. Anyway, right about that time, you could hear the sirens and luckely the intruder must have also heard them because he stopped fumbling with the door and the next thing I heard was an officer at the door identifying himself and asking if everything was OK. My Mom spoke with the officers and they asked us what we saw, searched the property and surrounding area and found nothing. Before the Officer left, he took me aside and my mother aside and told me that if we ever had to pull that gun again, don't wait till the intruder gains entry. He told me that if I had a shot, take it and if I got him, they would make sure that what showed up in the report was forced entry, suspect shot inside the house. Basically, shoot him and they would drag his butt inside so there would be no questions.
This is a true story and you must remember that this was in the 70s. In those days, law enforcement in the Houston area didn't joke. Anyway, sometimes you don't have a choice. This is why I would never support banning firearms. JMO

Fair enough. The first post ended with "Don't mess with Texas". The implied message seems to be "kill them before they kill you". what you've told me here is that it's difficult to be safe in a lot of communities. Maybe the better question to ask is why is that the case?

Because there is bad all over the world. That's the simple answer, IMO. There is litterally no place on Earth you can be completely safe. It's the nature of Humans. There will always be those who will hurt there fellow man if the opportunity presents itself.

I have to be honest, I don't disagree with the kill them before they kill you philosophy. If you kill someone who is threatening your family like these men were I would applaud you just the same as I would mourn you if they killed you.
Violence exists and we can't turn a blind eye to it and wish it will go away. Anyone who dares to think about breaking into my house is taking his life into his own hands. He better hope I have a pistol instead of my shotgun. He stands a much better chance because I stink out loud with a pistol. With a rifle or shotgun he has no chance at all. I won't miss. I should feel guilty that I'd shoot someone who comes into my house to threaten me? Sorry, but I never will.
In the old west there was actually a defense for murder called "he needed killing." This is just my opinion, but if someone is armed and they break into your house, and you come out on top and they come out 6 feet under. They needed killing. I have no remorse in me for someone who dies in that manner. Never have, never will.
It won't matter how sorry a story you tell me about them either. The minute they choose to be a worthless pariah of society they lose all sympathy from me. I don't have it in me to feel sorry for trash.

Perhaps I haven't made myself clear. If a guy breaks into my house, all bets are off. His *** is grass and I'm a lawnmower. My question was and still is why? what's the difference between my community and the one this family lives in? I had a recent talk with the Staff Seargant at the local RCMP detchment. He told me that some folks with guns in their homes are more likely to have them used on them by the invaders. He favours the aluminum baseball bat.
TrickBlue: Wow. Safety for families is clearly an issue where you live. I honestly don't know if it's that much safer here. I'm just not sure that guns are much of an answer.
Zrnkill:I'm not embarrassed and I'm not spinning. I'm just not sure what the answer is. I'd rather be pro-active and protect my family than reactive and have to respond to a tragedy. An example of that is a campaign in my community to get more money for more RCMP in our community. We're getting a new deachment bulding, so things may be looking up.
BTW, guys, as part of my job, I work with victims of crime.

As I'm sure you know Phil, Right to Bare Arms is a tricky one in this country. Plenty in favor of doing away with this right. Plenty in favor of keeping it in place. Texas, as a rule, is probably more heavily Pro Gun Rights then most any state simply because of the cultural heritage and the large population that owns guns. Because we have many posters who live in Texas, it's probaly a fairly natural thing for most of them to be in favor of owning weapons. If this were a SF 49 board and most of the posters were from California, the views might be significantly different (I won't use Oakland because they would probably be in favor of everybody owning Battle Axes :laugh2: ). Anyway, I do understand what your trying to say. It is just that personally, my life experiences have taught me that there are times in life when a person may well be forced to defend themselves. I would like to live in a world where that would not be necessary but that's an unrealistic expectation IMO.

BTW, guys, as part of my job, I work with victims of crime. The only difference in most communities is luck. There are many acts of random violence. There has never been a comprehensive study that I have ever seen that determines why invaders choose one home on a whole block of homes and pass by hundreds of homes to choose that one.
I consider it good luck that no one has ever tried to break into my home. I did catch a guy trying to break into my truck one night. It just so happened that when I heard him I was working on my compound bow. I don't miss with that either. So I took it with me outside and I snuck up behind him. I said, "when you take off running, your best bet is to be zig zagging." His knees buckled. We both had bad luck that day. Me for having a truck someone decided to try and break into, and him because I heard him and was "armed."
There's no rhyme or reason to violence. It doesn't do any good to try and make sense of it. These two guys picked a house and one paid the ultimate price, the other will pay as well.

That's exactly what it is. The "Mess" is that whole double meaning thing. "Mess" as in A Mess (garbage) and "Mess" as in don't mess with the greatest state in the union.
But just cuz it started off as a litter campaign, doesn't mean it doesn't hold true in every single aspect you can come up with (regarding texans of course).
Also, I believe now - in texas - you don't have to wait for the intruder to gain entry to the house to shoot him. If they're in your yard (and they are intruders) you can make them take a dirt nap. You better believe if someone broke into my house I'd end them even if they were already out of my house and in my yard. ANd it has nothing to do with wanting to end someone's life. It's protecting your family and property, and about standing up to criminals and sending a message that we aren't going to take it.

We don't shoot visitors here, just criminals. And the criminals that "Get away" (from the home owner, not the police) end up being fried anyway.
I really don't see how we have any crime here. If the person who's house you're invading doesn't get ya, the electric chair will.

My Dad hunted Bear with a Bow. When we were young, we were not allowed to have a gun until we learned to shoot a bow. That's a better way to do it IMO. I still shoot a bow but I no longer hunt. It's a fine way to teach children safety techniques without actually putting a gun in there hands right off the bat.

I've never ridden an Indian, but I dated this hottie a few years back who told her dad that I rode an old Trumpet. Well, apparently her dad immediately started to joke me and call me out for not riding 'real iron'....like his Black Shadow (which she completely neglected to tell me he had).
So when I heard about this, I just had to introduce myself to him...and covertly talk him into letting me have a ride.
It was amazing. I've never ridden a bike similar to it. Quite a piece of machinery. I still can't figure out how most of that bike works.

Double barrel 12 Gauge Shotgun loaded with 00 Buckshot.
Simple to use, do not have to worry much about aiming, and you have 2 shots. And its big enough that accidents like with handguns are much more rare.
Best home defense weapon you can have.

Not bad, but I'll keep my Mossberg 500 Persuader. Pistol grip allows for greater mobility, and a 6, 8, or 9 shot model should take care of most of your attackers...unless people really, really don't like you...and have formed a posse.

How much do you practice with it- not just tartget but actual tactical?
That is why a pistol is NOT a good home defense weapon unless you practice constantly and well.
A shotgun needs much less training and thus is more generally effective especially for those with little experience.

It's a pistol grip shotgun. I've had plenty of practice. Trust me.

Yep. That particular model is cheap, reliable, simple to use, and very adaptable to it's user. It's highly adjustable to the user's needs. You can change stocks, magazine capacity, mounts, etc. A very good home protection option.

What I am talking about is something very simple and effective to use. That is why a double barrel is better for those not familiar or not experienced. The more complicated a weapon the worse in those situations.

Don't mess with Texas is an old saying that goes back a long way. The OP is from Texas.
It started as an anti-littering campaign, became a very popular bumper sticker and T-shirt (I have one of each), and gradually morphed into a kind of unofficial slogan for Texans everywhere...
Personally, I keep my Dad's service .45 in my nightstand drawer, loaded... I have only fired it 2 or 3 times, so as to familiarize myself with it, and I fervently hope that the only time it ever comes out of the nightstand drawer is to be cleaned, about once every 3 months... I wish to never cause another human being physical harm...
But if somebody forces their way into my home while I'm there, I can stone guarantee you they'll wind up looking down the barrel of that .45...
In the old west there was actually a defense for murder called "he needed killing." This is just my opinion, but if someone is armed and they break into your house, and you come out on top and they come out 6 feet under. They needed killing. I have no remorse in me for someone who dies in that manner. Never have, never will.
There ya go... in my book, that's kill or be killed time... and that's an easy choice...
I told my nephew about the "he needed killing" defense, now we often joke about it...

I did catch a guy trying to break into my truck one night. It just so happened that when I heard him I was working on my compound bow. I don't miss with that either. So I took it with me outside and I snuck up behind him. I said, "when you take off running, your best bet is to be zig zagging." His knees buckled.
.
Awesome, just awesome !!!!

I'm a huge fan of learning to shoot a bow.My father-in-law has a bobcat on his wall with the arrow he used to shoot it with. Now that's a hunter.

problem with using a bow inside is you need room - and it is awkward in tight places. Now a CROSSBOW on the other hand.......

I prefere a Colt 1911 as well. .45 is an excellent load with plenty of close range stopping power. I use Remington .45 Auto 230 grain hallowpoint rounds. I am an excellent shot with this Colt and I have full confidence that I can hit anything, in any conditions, accuratly.
I keep my Colt in my nightstand as well. It is always handy, should I need it quickly.

Yeah, it was. My old man, who was actually my step father, but he was my Dad to me was a heck of a Hunter. He was a career military man and one of the few things he enjoyed was hunting and fishing. He was as good a shot with a bow as I've ever been around. I can't say that he was a real sweet heart, ever, but he was a heck of a man. He taught me all the important things I needed to know in life.
BTW, pretty funny on the limp thing Silver. :D
