I dont know that this is the correct forum, if so feel free to move it mods..

I just wanted to take the time to wish all the families in the wake of this huge storm all the luck in the world. I hope everyone listened to the news and evacuated because what I see on tv is amazing yet very disturbing. My family will be praying for all of yours and theirs.

I was watching Fox news earlier and there were some idiots at a bar drinking heavily, when the news anchor informed them of "certain death" if they stayed, they just toasted each other. Wow Im pretty sure I would be out of there.

Same here. You'd think the people in the city would be okay -- or at least not have their lives threatened -- but you have to hope that some of the ones closer to the coast make it okay.

I was just watching Houston TV and saw a disturbing thing... They said that up to 40% of the residents make have chosen to stay and ride it out? I hope that's not the case, because pretty much the entire island is going to be underwater.

Anyway... Best wishes for everyone.

I don't really think there's too much hype. The more the better. Hopefully more people will leave in the future.

I'm an insurance adjuster and work the 1st wave. Just got back from Gustav, because my company called me back to work this. I'll be on the ground by Sunday.

Most the people I talk with, after staying the first time, will never do so again. On top of the hours and hours off high winds, rain, and tornadoes - it's the days to weeks after the storm without water, electricity, or decent food.

That 40% was in Galveston, those of us here in North Houston haven't had and won't get a mandatory evac. We'll still get wind and rain but we aren't in anywhere near the danger that those in Galveston are.

My prayers go out to everyone, just a week ago Ike seemed headed my way in south florida. Somehow it went west and avoided us. All you can do is be prepared and listen to the local officials. Storms make you appericiate the simple things you take for granted like, power, and cable television.

Good luck to all.

I agree that it is a pain in the butt if you stay(assuming the best), but I am on the fence if telling people they are all gonna die is worth it.

I can see both sides of the "why" I just don't know what is right or wrong in this instance.

The media totally overreacts to this sort of thing. Of course, if you're directly on the coast in a trailer home, you better be gone. But outside of that, there's not much damage going to be done. I guess it's a good thing they overdo it, because it's better safe than sorry. But there's a reason the city was built inland. And there's a reason only one "hurricane" has ever done any significant damage to the city. And that wasn't even a hurricane, it was just a tropical storm that stayed over the city too long. You're not going to see much wind or rain damage that you wouldn't see in any normal severe thunderstorm.

It's not just those on the coast that get damage. Tree damage is very significant and can cause death. Plus, random tornadoes spiral out of these storms quite often.

Your being very naive to think just those on the coast are affected by these storms.

ike has a massive windfield so anyone remotely near land fall like even 200 mi away from eye be very careful and and take every possible precaution . if you live near the coast adn are somehow still on get off and leave !!!! ike is strengthening right before it makes landfall as if it was showing its true hand right before landfall. Early reports / fears are that flooding may be way worse than katrina . stay safe.

Corpus Christi man drowns, considered Ike victim

A 19-year-old Corpus Christi man was presumed drowned after storm surge from Hurricane Ike swept him from a jetty, Corpus Christi Police Chief Bryan Smith said.

Michael Moxley was second-known Ike-related fatality in the hours before the category 2 hurricane made landfall.

A 10-year-old Montgomery County boy died early Friday after a tree limb fell on him. His father was cutting down the tree anticipating Ike's wrath.

In Corpus, police said Moxley and friends were out on a jetty, which is a rocky sea wall, along the Packery Channel, when the wave knocked Moxley under.

His friends said they last saw in the water but not moving.

"We haven't found him," Smith said. "We can't call him dead yet.....but it's not looking good."

Friends who tried to save him ended up being rescued themselves. One's back was broken when the violent swells knocked him against the rocks. He was airlifted to an area hospital. Others were "banged up" with minor injuries, Smith said.

A Coast Guard search for Moxley so far has proved fruitless, Smith said.

In the Montgomery County accident, Joel Smith was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Tomball Regional Medical Center, officials said. The accident happened shortly before 9 a.m. Friday, Montgomery County officials said.

``Now he (Caleb) has to deal with the guilt,'' said Richard Jennings, pastor of River of Praise, a nondenominational church in Tomball, who spoke on behalf of the family and related how the boy was killed. Jennings called the incident ``a freak accident.''

Nathan Smith, a single father, took his sons everywhere with him, Jennings said, including frequently to church, where they had attended for about two years.

Joel Smith, a fifth-grader with red hair, was a member of the congregation's children's ministry, Jennings said, and attended every Wednesday and Sunday.

``He was a real good kid,'' said Bob Sanchez, a church member who finished sawing the tree into stumps after the incident at the family's home in the 1800 block of Coe Road, west of Texas 249. The house is at the end of a gravel road in a heavily wooded area.

Nathan Smith is ``devastated,'' Jennings said, adding:
``It's just a real tragic incident.''

I live in Victoria...work for FedEx ground(an in town route). All week I was telling people that Ike would turn north...Ive never seen a hurricane go straight. All week I was hearing it from "paranoid" people, at first it was funny then it got annoying. Now even if Ike woulda hit Victoria way I wasn't gonna leave.

Sure enough it turned northward.

Its hitting the Galveston area, and I have a sister(and bro-in-law, 2 nieces, and a 2yr old nephew) that live in Pearland, TX. Which is west of Galveston.

It's 1:30-sh in the morning and I finally got in touch with them. Their power just went out and have lost part of their fence.

Now, I said earlier in the week that the "paranoid" people were making me laugh then annoying me. Well, Now I am one of those paranoid people. For my sister's family sake. They do have plenty of food. A couple of generators.

I honestly think they will be just fine, but I am still worried. I probably will not sleep until I know the eye of the storm has long passed over Pearland, TX(and it should be passing over there) just to know that they are ok

speaking of my nephew....I gotta show him off a little, LOL

Associated Press HOUSTON -- About 4.5 million people are without power in the Houston area as Hurricane Ike slams the Texas coast.
It will likely be awhile before electricity returns. CenterPoint Energy says it could take weeks before all the power in the nation’s fourth-largest city was restored.
Utility spokesman Floyd LeBlanc said 1.3 million customers—or 4.5 million people—had lost power by early Saturday. Work crews were coming in Monday to restore power, and priority will be given to hospitals, fire and police departments and water and sewage treatment plants.
The city’s last direct hit from a hurricane came from Alicia in 1983, when 750,000 CenterPoint customers lost power. It took 16 days to restore all service.
Texas New Mexico Power also reports about 20,000 customers without power.

Powerless: More than 99 percent of region in the dark

Daybreak today in Hurricane Ike's wake only revealed what Houston area power providers already knew — the lights are out for roughly 5 million people, and getting the juice flowing again will be a painstaking process that could take weeks.

Virtually all electricity customers of both CenterPoint Energy and Entergy Texas are without power today at noon. The Texas-New Mexico Power Co., which services communities south of town, from Alvin to West Columbia, is 100 percent offline.

"We sustained a massive hit," said CenterPoint Energy spokesman Floyd LeBlanc, noting that 2.1 million customers out of 2.26 million are without power.

A CenterPoint customer is not neccessarily one person. For example, one family househould frequently has more.

"We're realizing there's a lot of property damage. Trees hit power lines, some fell on houses, buildings and cars. This storm did a lot of damage," he said.

Service trucks have already started to roll into neighborhoods across Houston now that winds have finally subsided and damage assessors are walking the power lines to check for breaks, according to CenterPoint spokesman Floyd LeBlanc.

But, so far, CenterPoint has not been giving permission to fly its helicopters over the area to assess damage.

"The Federal Aviation Administration said immediately after the hurricane only medical transport would be allowed in the area but we are pressing them. We would like to get up and take advantage of this daylight," he said.

Despite the lack of aerial videos and photographs, CenterPoint does know that roughly 30 percent of its transmission system in the metro area sustained serious damage.

The transmission system is more than mere poles and wires. It is the network of tall metal towers in grassy rights-of-way that bundle electricity and deliver it to neighborhood substations.

According to LeBlanc, the metropolitan area is bisected by a diagonal line stretching from Fort Bend County in the Southwest up to Humble in the Northeast. The transmission trouble is primarily south and east of that line, running from the Astrodome area to the Ship Channel and encompassing neighborhoods from Bellaire to Baytown.

Since CenterPoint has yet to assess all the damage, the company does not know what the exact problem is.

If high-speed winds crumpled the transmission towers — as happened in Louisiana during Hurricane Gustav over Labor Day — it could take a couple of weeks to bring those installations back to working status. If debris, such as tree limbs, are tangled in the high wires that would be an easier fix than reengineering the towers but could still take days.

"We just don't have those answers yet," LeBlanc said.

Ike snuffed out power not just for most of Houston, but also most of Southeast Texas, including Beaumont and Port Arthur.

Entergy spokesman David Caplan confirmed "more than 99 percent" of its 395,000 customers are offline, including parts of Navasota, most of The Woodlands, Huntsville, Bolivar Peninsula, Orange, Port Arthur and Beaumont.

The Texas New Mexico Power Co. is completely dark at this point. It provides power to low-lying communities near the coast including Friendswood, Texas City, Dickenson and Angelton.

Power is flowing to downtown Houston, the Texas Medical Center and Bush Intercontinental Airport because those areas have underground power lines, LeBlanc said. Elsewhere, electricity was spotty at best.

There were early reports Saturday morning from parts of Montrose and the Galleria area that power remained on. But even those neighborhoods that appeared to be spared, such as Willow Meadows near Reliant Center, got blinking lights for several minutes and then darkness as the long tail of the storm passed over, whipped up high winds after the eye passed.

The power companies are warning resident it will be a long, painstaking restoration process to get power flowing again. First priority goes to restoring power for key infrastructure, such as hospitals, wastewater management facilities and police and fire stations. LeBlanc says CenterPoint crews are already in parts of Houston working on that.

Then attention turns to getting electricity to key retailers, including grocery stores, gas stations and big-box home supply stores.

LeBlanc noted that the last time a major hurricane passed over Houston — Alicia in 1983 — about 750,000 CenterPoint customers lost power. In the first four days, power was restored for 550,000. Then it took a dozen days to restore power to the rest.

The magnitude of Hurricane Ike's damage is exponentially bigger.

The lack of electricity affects more than lighting, refrigeration, air conditioning and communication. It also impacts the water supply. Mayor Bill White is urging Houston residents to conserve water and drink only bottled water until government officials can determine whether the water supply has been tainted by flooding.

Through the night as Ike rolled across the region, popping sounds like blasts from a shotgun could be heart through the driving wind and rain. Those relentless pops were power transformers, which flow electricity to power lines, tripping off.

Here's why: When a power line snaps in the wind or is taken out by a falling tree or debris, the line "goes to the ground." Electricity has to flow somewhere. When the grid works properly, a controlled amount of power zips along the lines to electrify neighborhoods. But when a line goes to the ground, a surge of power flows to that uncontrolled, broken line.

The fuse link in the transformer box at the top of the power pole senses that dangerous overload in electricity and blows, knocking out the power.

To fix this problem, line workers have to repair both the power line and put a new fuse in the transformer. In some cases, the entire transformer has to be replaced. It's labor-intensive work.

On an ordinary day, a blown transformer is a relatively easy fix, but the sheer volume of downed power lines and blown transformers across the entire region guarantees it will be weeks before everybody has power again, LeBlanc says.

The Texas New Mexico Power Co. confirmed its main transmission line into Brazoria County is down. Many in that region evacuated and the power company is urging them not to come back yet.

Entergy spokesman Caplan said people who evacuated from its service areas "may want to carefully weigh" whether to return home immediately.

The power companies are all part of an employee sharing program with thousands of linesmen, tree trimmers and other safety personnel from around Texas and utilities in 23 other states on standby. They can come to the region to assist with power restoration, but their expertise is already in tight supply.

Louisiana still has some 60,000 customers without power due to Hurricane Gustav which hit the coast almost two weeks ago. Power workers are still trying to reconnect everyone there.

CenterPoint has 7,000 workers coming in starting Sunday, with more set to arrive Monday. But spokesman LeBlanc said the company was expecting 1 million customers to lose power. More than twice that expectation did, so CenterPoint has to round up more crews.

"We didn't think we'd lose virtually every customer on the overhead system," LeBlanc said.

"It's going to take a lot of manpower and it's going to be a balancing act to reapportion people to these affected areas," according to Entergy spokesman David Caplan.

"Safety trumps speed. In a sense, it takes as long as it takes. We can't accelerate things because of a storm situation because we cannot put workers in jeopardy or ask them rush things when there's an increased chance injury would occur."

If the power being out wasn't bad enough, not having cell phone reception is even worse. It's been really hit and miss with even text messages for me.

I evac'd so I don't know what's going on at my place. I'm sure my fence blew out. Power's pretty spotty all over according to the Chron. So I'm just gonna stay up here in my mom's house until I get the go ahead to come back.

Some of my friends have regained power. SW area - W. Airport and the Beltway. Other friend lives off 610 -59 behind that Boudreaux, and she said her lights are back on.

Ok Guys reporting in I still have no power going on Day 4 in fact 90% of my area still has no power and I am well over 80+ miles from Galveston

i live in the NW side of Houston we where hammered by the high winds lots of power lines; tree damage and stuff like that no flooding

I have a Tree House now I got lucky it could have been way worse on the damage. The important part to me no one was hurt.

I feel your pain, going through the same thing. I live in the Spring Branch area and still without power but my folks went out and bought a generator so at least I could enjoy one of my life’s simpler pleasures and watch the Cowboys last night. When I start getting frustrated with being without power I stop and realize how fortunate I am compared to so many who lost so much more

My job is still without power, but my house is fine and has power. Had some friends go check on my house and everything looks good. A fence fell between me and my neighbor's house. Friend told me that it was close to going thru my bathroom window, but it's just laying sideways for now.

Since I'm staying in FW, I'm just gonna stay up here til circumstances in Houston improve a bit more.

Wow - sorry to see all that. Friendly advise - go get a tarp and cover those holes up so no more damage occurs, but keep your receipts! Sounds obvious, I know, but some folks don't realize that they have a duty to mitigate damages immediately after the loss and the cost of mitigation is recoverable, but if you do nothing and you could have, ins. might not take care of the additional that occurs!

This is day 7 for me with no power. It does wear on you but I do believe these guys are doing the best they can to restore power. I really appreciate those workers from other states who are here to help us restore power and other needs we currently have. Thus far I have seen utility trucks from Michigan, Ohio, Florida and Alabama in our area and I would like to thank them for all they are doing.

not that it will make you guys feel any better about not having power but
the guy tailgating next to me last week worked for Oncor and he said his workers who had gone to Beaumont were putting in 100 hour weeks and sleeping in their trucks...so just know they are doing all they can...and I tip my hat to them....(now if they knew their boss was tailgating Monday night
they might revolt)

my brother in Beaumont has his power back on as of today, so progress is being made.

I have a whole new respect for the wind power of hurricanes after this week. I'm just now getting back online after the remnants of Ike came through way up here in Dayton and almost all of Ohio. Sunday afternoon, we had anywhere between 65-84 mph wind gusts for about 5 hours. I'm not sure what the sustained winds were in the area, but they were stating that it was at the least sustained at tropical storm force winds.

I'm not saying that what happened here was anything like what happened in TX over last weekend. Normally in Ohio you'll get a hit and miss on a tornado. But nothing like the winds over that long a time period. I know that in my area alone, that it took all week to get power to my lil suburb of Dayton. I've seen the frustration of this small level of damage by comparison. I am amazed at how the folks down in TX have handled this disaster.

I got back to Houston Monday night and it was kinda eerie driving through the city cuz it was so dark in spots. They're supposed to be lifting the overnight curfew, but I don't know if they should based on how many people still have no power.

My brother lives in Seabrook and my Dad about 5 miles down the road in Bayview. Neither has power yet.

My brother house was about 3 blocks from the bay and got 4 feet of water. They are told it will have to be torn down. It is on stilts, but they had 1 bedroom, bathroom and garage on the first floor. My brother is camping on the lawn to keep looters out, until they get insurance money and/or fema comes up with a place for them to live. Wow, poor guy, this is the second time he has lost a house. In 1979 he lost his place to a tornado in Wichita Falls.

My Dad's place seems to be ok, except they still have no power.
