Interesting ad, but it reeks of the old "I'm Michael Jordan" ad.
They pulled out the big guns to combat the mac vs pc ads.

No more pathetic than the entire Mac campaign being a hip image and showing that PC is all boring.
Fact is that I've never had a PC crash that wasn't my own fault. Mac is the same power for more money and less peripheral ability. Screw that, I can have a PC AND wear hoodies and watch Garden State. Best of both worlds.

Bill makes software, not computers like apple.
There is even MS software for apple.

Best thing about a PC is that you can have literally thousands if not millions of options you can choose to install on it. Different mobos, sound cards, video cards, hard drives, cd, dvd, floppy, card drives. Styles of cases, CPUs, CPU cooling systems and so on and so on not to mention the software available for it.
Apple...you have nowhere near the options as you do with a PC.
And again...MS does software and some hard ware stuff.

I agree it could be reinforced by smoething like (said by a hipster looking person), "I'm a PC because [insert techie-friendly feature of Windows]." Double whammy.

The majority of people are forced to use some sort of MS software because of it's predominance. There are still some things that Apple software hasn't caught up on. Still, none of that means that MS is a better product.
...and I never said Apple 'owned' PC. I said they've outsmarted them. Fact is, MS has a far greater share of the computing world. It's completely unreasonable to think that Apple would flip flop with MS overnight....and I hope they never do.

the mac used to be a very propriatary machine. motorola proc, and everything built for the mac. it was truly a unique system. a mac now is a pc with a MAC OS on it, nothing more.
look at a nice mac and look at a nice pc. you'll see ATI, NVidia, SATA, same type of RAM and so on and so forth. what's different? the OS.
people who want to be a mac-fanatic, have fun. it *is* a good machine. but it's pricey and the extra cost is mostly for the "i'm not microsoft" which is usually it's biggest strength. they have a nitch market in the computing world and know it.
however, they own the entertainment world with i-tunes.
these commercials are a lot better than the seinfield commercials, period. just everyday people using a PC for everyday things.
people want to say a mac is far better for audio and graphic editing.
wrong.
again, look at the chipsets for either machine. same thing.
you'll have problems with either machine eventually. they're computers, not a toaster. just pick the one you like that works for you and run with it. why people make a computer personal i don't think i'll ever get.

A lot of truth to this. Mac has adopted many 'pc' tools. If the difference is in the OS, then IMO Apple Wins hands down.
I guess that has to be the case, as MS doesnt' make computers.
Doesn't change the fact that MS is using the PC market to sell his OS...which many consider an inferior product.

what factual errors did mac point out?
here's the list of features from mac on their OSX
1. desktop. yea, they call the desktop a feature. both have it.
2. finder - an ability to browse your files with a pic to show you that file. both have it.
3. time machine. aka, automatic backup. and now you can go back and recover a system setting from awhile back? XP had that. next.
4. e-mail. ok, e-mail is a feature now? MS has outlook, outlook express, windows mail - that's such a gimme it's a waste to call it a feature of an OS. hope they don't get tagged for bundling.
5. ichat - instant messenger.
6. spaces. a way to group your windows. not sure what i see new here.
7. safari - a webbrowser included in the OS? THE HORROR!!! win95 anyone? 13 years isn't too far behind and MS had to deal with janet reno about even putting on IN the OS - now it's a feature?
8. parental controls. this is kinda cool. you can setup profiles in XP/Vista but not that easy.
9. boot camp - run windows on your mac. ok, just get a PC and run windows.
and finally the last one i'll bring up - remote terminal services.
been there, done that. win98 and on could do that.
so, let's talk features if you want to talk features. be specific and not just apple said they have some.

they tried to use an IBM selectric typewriter but they couldn't find the floppy drive. not sure what your point is here but this is a pretty silly analogy and sounds more like an apple fan than just being objective. they designed an OS for the PC and that's what they'll market.
what is MAC putting their OS on? it ain't a mac, just a glorified gateway, dude.

Did Apple not address that they were even talking about computers in their ads? Did they not question the ability of MS's new OS to do what was advertised?
Look, I'm not going to get in this conversation with a bunch of computer geeks. I'll lose. You win. I guess the fact that Apple has continually gained favor amongst consumers isn't going to be considered. Is it because of their superior 'hipster' add campaign that MS has now attempted to mimc? Is it because of a better product.
You decide for yourself as I did. When I have a PC and it last 2 years before it slows to a crawl and then finally dies...then by an Apple that proceeds to last 8 years before I even have to check my back-up files. I'll gladly pay the extra loot for the extended service and peace of mind. It's a no-brainer for me. Perhaps not for those that know computers better than myself.
I'll just leave it at this. These commercials suck. Very artsy though.

The message I always got from the "I'm a Mac/I'm a PC" commercials was that if you wanted to do serious work, you got a PC, and if you wanted to goof around and have fun, you got a Mac.
I just figured I wasn't the target audience for the Mac commercials since I'm looking for a computer that is useful in a business environment (you know, where people wear suits). :D

so you tout that mac talks about features and when i ask about what features point by point, you run off to some fictional point of reference and dodge any point at all YOU said apple made.
you're right. you lose. but on the flip side, nothing to win here. if you prefer the mac, great. but there isn't much if anything it can do the PC can't do cheaper. i'll also doubt you have had the same mac for the last 8 years and a PC for 2 years to run that comparison.

yes, i can. and the PC did each and every one of them, many years before. ON A WINDOWS SYSTEM.
what, you run off at the mouth then not back it up often? they talked about what a mac did, not what a PC can't do. i heard them say one they can now remote desktop into another MAC.
pc's have been doing that for a decade. you can now run virtual servers on 1 PC. (just have a lot of ram) so just because they say "this is what the apple can do" does NOT mean the PC can't do it now does it?

You realize, don't you, that Apple is also using PCs to sell their computers? Aside from the case and a proprietary ROM chip (only to prevent you from installing OS X on a non-Mac, it has no other function) it's all PC hardware? Xeon CPUs, ATI/Nvidia video cards, etc etc. They still keep it closed house so you have to spend $500 for their upgrade that on the open market goes for about $100, but to each their own. The ignorance among many Mac users in regards to the real nuts-and-bolts of computers is staggering. I've seen batted about that you *MUST* use a "Mac" hard drive for compatibility. Never mind that Apple opens a Seagate hard drive they paid $115 for, and resells it for $300 on their website or the Apple Store. You MUST apparently use THAT one. For some reason.
For the record, I use both PC and Mac at work as a video editor/motion graphics artist. And....the PowerMac crashes more often than the PC does - not by much mind you, but it's a little ahead of the curve there. Also, most of the crashes on the Mac are *HARD* - requiring a hard restart and lost work if I hadn't saved in a while. I can usually bail out of the locking app on a PC (not always though). It happens, especially with processor intensive applications like Final Cut Pro (Mac) or Premier (PC) or especially After Effects (both)

There was nothing but fudged information in those ads. Some just not true. Basically the ads just said, cool people use us, we'll play up what we have, whether its on a PC or not. They were funny at first, then just seemed like a bunch of "I have this" and run ads. In the meantime, their sales still suck, and Apple has moved more and more away from them.

Look at you folks debating PC and Mac. There is no debate. At the end of the day it is about BUSINESS. The BUSINESS = Enterprise.
Enterprise = Baggillions of dollars. The data centers and corporations around the planet do not have multi million dollar contracts w/ MS and Dell/HP/IBM for nothing.
Fine Macs are hip - My kid loves a Mac
PC's are business and high end performance applications/software/gameing
Apple has it's little nitch market. It however will never be the hardware/software behind fortune 500 corporations.

How right you are. I was merely lamenting what I hear from the "typical" mac enthusiast, and there are always exceptions. I suspect many of "them" switched exclusively to Macs around the Windows 3.1 days, and in their mind Microsoft's product has been frozen in time since then. That's how they could watch a commercial touting a desktop and the ability to send e-mail as "features" and presume that Windows cannot perform such Hurculean tasks. I also suspect that's why so many of them aren't aware that there aren't "special" hard drives or "special" memory for Macs either. And don't get me wrong - I do like the PowerMac I use at work. It's an 8 core beast with 4 gigs of ram. Final Cut Studio... pretty slick. Their OS is nice too. But so is XP. I haven't made the leap to Vista yet - haven't seen the need to so far. I also love the Adobe Production Premium Suite CS3 for the PC, although that's not a Microsoft product per se, just runs on one.

The good old days when you had to know something to make a computer work not just put a cd in and let it do all the work for you. :D
I remember when I first started at my current job.
We had computers that were just monitors and keyboards at work stations and they all hooked into one server.
It was all unix and we had this tape drive that was about the size of a washer or dryer with those huge reel tapes that were always a pain to load and get to save to because a speck of dust would screw them up.
Where everything had to be moved in directories and you had no GUI or a mouse and you had to use commands for everything.
Ahh...those were the days.:laugh2:

 Ahh yes the good old days
When I first started my current job in 96 we were still using DOS, Lotus 123, and Word Perfect. We quickly changed. :laugh2:
For the record, I use both PC and Mac at work as a video editor/motion graphics artist. And....the PowerMac crashes more often than the PC does - not by much mind you, but it's a little ahead of the curve there. Also, most of the crashes on the Mac are *HARD* - requiring a hard restart and lost work if I hadn't saved in a while. I can usually bail out of the locking app on a PC (not always though). It happens, especially with processor intensive applications like Final Cut Pro (Mac) or Premier (PC) or especially After Effects (both)
PowerMac? Tell me you're not using 10 year old technology and this is just a typo... :laugh2:
All in all, computers suck. They're still a nascent technology in the grand scheme of doing business and we're just the proving ground, suffering through the pains of infancy. Our grand kid's will be laughing at us.
I'd rather be painting on canvas, but alas an impatient world has foisted this as the new model of doing business on us, so I'm stuck with what the tide brings.
I use Mac exclusively for work, after realizing that Windows boxes are not for me, but that said, I can spend just as much time cursing my Mac as I could a PC, while not actually working. Over 10 years of experience with these things and still not in a stable relationship of trust.
Potential Employer: So where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Me: Staring at a spinning beach ball (that's a Mac thing), muttering obscenities wondering why I can't just do my work.
I've never had a canvas crash, or a brush freeze up. Never had to call some dude in India to get my paints up and running properly.
I can enumerate all of the silliness I've gone through with Windows too, as a web designer and owner but in the end, I guess it's what works for you. Ask most honest IT guys and they'll tell you they both suck and would rather be working in Linux.
That said, this commercial campaign is lame. Apple has a lot of ground to cover in terms of garnering more of the market percentage, but they have good momentum going with their toys.

Oops - yeah, I reached back for a decades-old term. They're MacPros. Sorry. And the notebooks are MacBook Pros. While I use them, I don't much keep up with the names Apple uses for them. We got a load of 'em a few months ago to replace the G5s we were running.

Mac is a ****ing joke, I've had my Vista for over 9 months and it still hasn't crash. Apple will always be second to Microsoft, they need to get over it, especially with those stupid ads.

Interesting ad, but it reeks of the old "I'm Michael Jordan" ad.
They pulled out the big guns to combat the mac vs pc ads.
You know what I seen it 2 times on the third time is was friday and i was high. It made me really think.
MAC, with my man Justin Long, has been potraying PC as corporate, stuck up, rigid..............while potraying themselves as cool, hip, now and happening. Almost like you are not cool and hip unless you have a MAC. Thats BS and has played in alot of peoples head. Here is a prime example.
I was in Union Station at Amtrak talking to this guy who was doing some work on his MAC, and i was adding tracks to a video. He asked me what I did, I said "Subcontracts Admin", then he said oh "you must love excel and word", then i told him "yeah they also help keep my own business straight"
Then he asked me what my side business was and when I told him I own and operate a couple of adult websites our conversation went from uptight to cool and relaxed. I was dressed in suit going to NY for business, so maybe he viewed me as a suit wearing, rigid corporate dude that had a PC.

Apple has and always will be inferior. Don't believe the hype. Now go polish your iPhone.
