View Full Version : Washington Post: Jason Taylor Almost Had Leg Amputated If He Waited..

Doctors told Jason Taylor that he "would be done forever" if he hadn't undergone Monday's emergency calf surgery.
Taylor was at risk of amputation had he waited longer due to nerve damage and "tissue necropsy." The surgery has him out indefinitely with no timetable for return. "Nobody knows when the body is going to respond," he said.

This is a horrible outcome to a freak incident, but still. If you're a successful vet and you get traded to the Redskins, game over.

Taylor Said He 'Could Have Been Done' (Updated)
Jason Taylor just informed us that the surgery he had to relieve a blood mass in his left calf Monday morning was of critical importance. Taylor is on crutches with his left calf wrapped, and said that, at the time the emergency surgery was performed, he was told by doctors that with any further delay "you would be done forever." Taylor said at the time the surgery was performed he was told he could have lost his foot. Waiting beyond that could have produced even more dire results.
"I was a little scared about that, and didn't quite understand why it had to be done so suddenly, and wanted to wait," Taylor said. "I actually wanted to wait till the sun came up ... But they kept stressing how important it was to get it done right away."
Taylor said he was told to sleep as much as possible and stay off his feet, with no timetable for a recovery. The injury, which Jim Zorn described Monday as "compartment syndrome," could have caused nerve damage and tissue necropsy and, if untreated, even death. He said he could miss from anywhere from a week to several months as his body heals. Taylor was kicked in the calf in the second quarter of the Redskins' victory Sunday. On Monday, Zorn said he had looked at game tape and no one was certain when the injury occurred.
Taylor had wanted to allow his body to heal more and hoped to delay the procedure until later in the day. The hospital got Redskins surgeon James Andrews on the phone at 5 a.m. and Andrews told them to put down the phone immediately and perform surgery.
"I still was a hard head," Taylor said. "Sometimes the things that make you good could be your demise, too. I was a hard head. I didn't want to do it. I wanted to wait. I wanted to let God try to heal it up some. Sometimes, I guess you've got to help Him out.
"It needed to be done immediately. I wanted to wait a couple of hours. They said, 'You don't have a couple of hours. We should have did it an hour ago.' It was one of those things where time's of the essence and we need to hurry up and do this right away."
As for his recovery, Taylor said, "Everyday it's getting a little better." As for his return to the football field: "Nobody knows when the body is going to respond, because everybody is different. It could be a week and it could be a couple of months."

With their 3 2nd round picks bunched up together, they had a stud pass rusher, Calais Campbell, in their laps. But instead, they chose 2 WRs and a TE, when they already have Moss, ARE, Cooley, and Yoder.

Yes, Daniel Snyder should be allowed to continue doing things his way. What would it hurt? For the rest of the league, that is?

And then on the other side of the spectrum, the Jags traded up in the 1st and 2nd round to grab pass rushers, when they could have had Jason Taylor for a 2nd.
Dont understand the logic of either team.

That is really bad news for Taylor.
I just thought it was a routine thing with his leg like simple bruising or something and they were just keeping out of a game or two as precaution and to let it heal.
Did not realize it was something that serious.
Hope he has a quick recovery. Seems like a pretty good guy.

I have been as critical as anyone with how we throw away draft picks and overspend for players in the past but this just isn't the case with Taylor.
We lost Phillip Daniels for the season on the first day of camp as well as his backup. We were in a tight spot. A second rounder for Jason Taylor, even at this point of his career, is not unreasonable.
The front office has actually gotten a lot better in this regard in the last couple of years. Should we have not taken 2 WR's and a TE with our top 3 picks? Fair criticism. I really wish we would draft more lineman but this has been going on for many years.
Anyway, I hope he is alright. I am still in shock reading that he almost had his leg amputated.

I think that he's referring more to the lack of drafting and emphasis for free agent wheeling and dealing during the Daniel Snyder era than just this offseason.

Take a soon to be 34 year old player, who is extremely undersized for his position, who spent the entire offseason dressing up in spandex and sequins and doing the cha-cha with D list celebrities instead of getting his body prepared for the football season and stick him on the freaking STRONG SIDE and sit back and watch in amazement as his body breaks down and call it a fluke injury (not to be confused with his fluke injury that almost got him in the preseason).
Who could have possibly seen this coming?

Sounds like he had a blood clot that cut off the circulation and the tissue/muscle just started to die. But, if that was the case, there should've been symptoms a lot earlier.

Freak injuries can happen to anyone at any time. The guy has played in 133 straight games and people think it was a risky trade. Pretty silly.
He'll be back and ready to go in a week or two.

It is a risky trade precisely because he has played in 133 straight games, because he's on the wrong side of 30, and because it was a trade for a player with a large salary, with all those attributes working against him, who decided that a dancing show was adequate preparation for the rigors of an NFL season.
There are any number of reasons why it was a stupid, risky trade based on the desperate reaction of a franchise that couldn't handle an injury to the magnificent Phillip Daniels. That's been borne out thus far.
It was a freak accident.
As much as we dislike Snyder (and the 'Skins), it was a very good trade, at the time.

My best guess is he developed severe swelling from the initial injury that raised the tissue pressure so high that blood flow into the leg was prevented. It is called a compartment syndrome and is not uncommon in the calf and the forearm due to the abundant connective tissue in these areas of the body.
The treatment is basically to put an incision in the skin and connective tissue to allow circulation to resume.
If any tissue has died, you remove that at the time of the surgery.
Once swelling has died down, you close everything back up.
My guess is he'll be out of action for a very long time to allow the healing to occur.
One thing about this condition is it is extraordinarily painful - way worse than a broken bone or dislocated joint.
It has been alluded to, but I don't think this injury has anything to do with lack of preparation for the football season. It is just very bad luck to get that type of swelling after a soft issue injury. I have seen this before but usually in association with fractures in the forearm or calf.

This happened to a buddy of mine who played semipro football during the summer of 2007, except it was in his thigh
Doctors told him the same thing, you wait your leg MAY be amputated. So lets get this show on the road
It took him about 6 weeks to get back to full strength.
We'll see how Taylor's body responds. As he said, it could be a week, or could be months

Not to mention those three 2nd round picks have been total BUSTS so far. While we're getting true star power from Felix Jones, i think their top three picks have a total of one catch for like 5 yards so far. :lmao:
Oh, and a one legged Taylor is still better than any other pass rusher the skynryds got, so i'd expect him back before too long.

This sounds more like sensationalistic crap from the doctor or Taylor himself.
Give me a break. For instance, if any part of your body becomes infected, you are at risk of losing the limb or even dying. But we have these things called antibiotics to prevent that from happening. And it's such a simple fix, that you don't hear many saying, "Man, if he had let that go longer, he was in danger of going into septic shock and dying."
Fine, he had blood pooling in his leg. So what? Simple procedure and I can almost guarantee he'll be back in 2-3 weeks.

I do think Taylor is a good player and pass rusher. I Just didn't think it was a good trade for two reasons.
First the Skins weren't one player away from being a contender. They still have a few holes that they have to fill. Taylor's presence does not erase those holes or overcome them.
Second they likely won't have his services for more than two years. He may even be gone after one season. By then the Skins may have filled the other holes on their team, but they will then be without their pass rusher.
It can easily be compared to the trade that Dallas used to acquire Charles Haley. Haley became the final component for a team that was on the verge of playing for a championship. He also played in Dallas for 5 years.
Somewhere Parcells is saying - it's because you spent all that time on your tipee toes dancing in the offseason.
