Lions have no plans to trade Roy Williams

by Tom Kowalski

Thursday September 25, 2008, 1:34 PM

While there aren't a lot of personnel decisions to be made in-season for new Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew, one of them is considering deals before the Oct. 14 trade deadline.

Mayhew said that he has no plans to open trade talks involving receiver Roy Williams, who will become an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Like every GM in the league, Mayhew said he would listen to any offers but he doesn't expect to make any calls concerning Williams and doesn't expect to receive any.

Green Bay had no plains to trade Brett Farve 3 days before they traded him either.

Could be baiting teams into offering good deals to him...but I don't see them actually trading him. They probably should, to ensure they get something out of him, but they most likely won't.

Jones: Hey Marty, looky here. You need to do something before this team really quits on you. Send us that nitwit for a couple draft picks before he decides to just shut it down for the season. You can even say you contributed to our Championship run.

Mayhew: Why would I want to help your team out? I can't even fix mine. We need more WRs, not give them up.

Mayhew is a former Redskin, so I doubt he willingly deals with us...

The only negative for Detroit in trading Williams is that it is an admission that they are giving up on the season. But didn't they do that already when they fired Milllen?

If he is smart he stock piles draft picks from whomever will give him the most.

I'd shoot for a 1st, 3rd and 5th for RW myself were I gm.

About the only way to keep his job short of them figuring out how to play magically is to point to a wonderful upcoming draft.

Honestly with us not in the division we are probably his best bet. We have draft picks from past maneuvers to offer and are as likely as anyone to offer a rich package without a pre-negotiated contract extension. With 3 weeks til the deadline that may be the best deal they can make and thus at least offer an olive branch of hope to Lions fans of a great off-season after a crappy regular season.

I'd rather we gave up a 3rd, 5th and a player but Detroit needs picks for the future as any help now is gonna be wasted.

They would likely be late picks anyway as very few teams are giving up a #1 for a player who is in his contract year unless they saw that as the missing piece...

I don't think they will franchise him but I could be wrong so he is likely gone after this season...

I'd do a 3 and 5 too...

Lions have no plans.

That is all you have to say and it perfectly describes why Detroit is a horrible franchise.

Okay, but you're not going to swindle me, mister! I'll trade with ya, but I'll only swap something of equal value to you for JohnnyMac. How many of these do you want for him?

http://www.stanleylawnandgarden.com/images/soil7.jpg

I'll ship ya 50 bags for JohnnyMac.

What do you mean, "I'm shortchanging you???"

Fine, Mr. Reality Man. 100 bags.

Not enough?

200 bags then, but you'll have to give me time to finalize the details of this trade. Cows get awfully upset when they're put on the clock. Getting them to poop on demand is hard work. moo.

Brilliant!

Nice to know that despite the change at the top that the Lions are still the Lions.

I guess Mayhew is just happy to sit in the seat for a while and not make any waves.

Until ownership gives total control to the next guy and Mayhew is out on his can after sitting on his hands for the next 4 months.

If the plan was to do nothing, why not wait until after the season to fire Millen?

The names may change, but the utter incompetence remains...

I can't imagine any team would give that for a WR who is in the last year of his deal, and whose production has been inconsistent.

In his defense, look has been throwing him the ball.

Sure, but the main point is that he can be signed next offseason, without forking over draft picks in a trade. The Lions are idiotic for not shopping him now.
