View Full Version : How can Parcells justify not playing Henson even in blowouts? It's beyond ridiculous

Parcells is being too damn stubborn. There is no logical explanation for not allowing Henson to take some snaps.

I think he explained it in a press conference last week.

Yep. He pretty much lost a lot of my respect tonight. I don't see him getting it back.

Understand the frustration...but it doesn't mean anything for a backup QB to play under these circumstances. If he has a good series...so what. Philly is so far ahead, it doesn't mean anything. The defense is ****, and I think I want a GROZ application faxed to me, ASAP!!

I think it's loyalty to Testaverde AND an amazing stubborn streak.
But my feeling is...this team hasn't played inspired football even when there was a chance for the playoffs...can you imagine how some of these guys are going to play when they are simply playing out the string? And, then Parcells will put Henson in...bad idea.

He'll come up with some illogical reason that the reporters won't even press him on it.
And don't say that it doesn't mean anything. ANY experience is good experience.

When you have not seen the field in a real NFL game and you have not played in over 3 years, EVERY second you are on the field helps.

Yeah, maybe...I don't know. Really, I'm so upset with the defense right now, I wouldn't care if Scooby Doo was under center. TO w/ 3 TDs?? How embarassing!

The guys on offense are still playing Juke, it's the defense that has quit.
Play Rogers, play Lee, play Crayton you play all the guys that are on the bubble, playing for their future. Anybody that quits will not be here next year.

Exactly BlindZebra. What we have here is gross negligence on Parcells part. He's not winning now, and is not building for our future. For Lee and Henson to not see the field tonight was stupidity personified. NO excuse.
Parcells lost a lot of respect tonight, not only from the fans, but the rest of the league as well.

Well there is that clause in Henson's contract that says he gets another 3 mil or whatever if he gets a certain % of the snaps, although nobody seems to be straight on which year's cap that would affect. Anyway, I hope that's not the reason.
What about Madden saying to hold him out until the last four games? I don't think we'll learn enough from four games.

The incentives were worded in such a way that Henson will eventually make them and void them unless he is injured. The only issue is when he will earn them. In the grand scheme, it matters not whether it is this year or next year.

It's 100% clear, per Adam, they would be on THIS year's cap. All bonuses go on the year they are attained unless there is not enough cap room, then they carry over.

I'm sorry, I know many of you want to see Drew. But it's like driving a car that's totally out of gasoline, and wanting to change the driver. Garbage time in a game will not help Hensen. This defense is total trash. Can't sack, can't force a fumble, can't intercept...hell, can't even defend passes. That's what our problem is. I would like to see Drew play, but even if he had, it wouldn't have meant anything in my opinion.

Believe it or not, I actually understand why Bill is doing what he's doing. I don't know if I would do it this way, but I get his reasons.
Bill is trying to get the guys to play with emotion. They aren't. He feels like playing Henson would give them an excuse to quit. He's not going to give it to them, even though it looks like they may have already.
Vinny didn't cost us the game tonight. In fact, you can easily make the case that Vinny hasn't been the problem all year.
Why start a QB controvery if you know Henson isn't ready, but he comes in and makes a few completions? You know the media and fans will be calling for him even if you know more than they do.
Why put Henson in without a running game, with poor receivers, and a pass rush coming with ears back? It could ruin him as fast as it did Hutch.
I still think we'll see Henson this year. There is no doubt about that. I think we'll even see enough to know about the kid. After all, Madden was right tonight about one thing. You just know about those guys when you watch them a little bit. Drew doesn't need to get beat up right now and be placed in a lose/lose. Just be patient. Wait. I think you'll still get to see enough of him later on...

I was fuming. Down 21 points with 4 minutes left, and you don't look to get your rookie QB any experience. Heck, just put him in there and let him hand the ball off a few times.
Even if VT is your guy, why the heck do you want him chancing an injury at the end of the game that is out of reach?
The only reason I can come up with is that he wanted to avoid any QB controversy in the coming weeks. Stupid - he could have just said he was protecting his starting QB, even if the kid did get in there and light it up.
It also puzzled me that we were handing the ball off with less than 6 minutes in the game down by 3 scores. We thought EG could use some reps?
I really don't understand the gameday decisions this year.

I don't blame much of anything on Vinny. I just don't believe four starts for Henson against Seattle, Philly, Wash, and the Giants is gonna be enough to tell us whether we need to draft a QB.

Specifically, when you rip Nors like he totally deserves. ;) But as I said earlier, I would like to see Drew. But how does junk time help him? It doesn't in my opinion. With that being said, I wouldn't have complained if he had put him in.
BZ...you should be so Pi$$ed at the defense that the QB stuff should be on the back burner. What the hell...our secondary even made Todd Pinkston look like Randy Moss. That's the real bummer of tonight!

i feel sorry for VT. there is no quit in this guy. he just comes back firing. and it's all for naught. the defense is perhaps the sorriest i've ever seen the cowboys field. the old men on the offense were leaving it on the field. the quicks may not be there anymore - but the desire hasn't dimmed. they were inspiring.

Waffle, the main knock on Henson is that he's been out of the game so long. Even Parcells said that he would be looking for opportunities to get him some playing time. Why not get him in to experience the speed of the game? Heck, if he put together a drive, he would have had 2-4 minutes more NFL experience than he had coming into this game.
If we cannot put him in tonight, when the game is out of reach what makes any of us think that Parcells will put him in when the season is out of reach?

A QB that has not played in 3+ years gets to look across at a real defense. He gets to make a pre-snap read. He gets to see the game at real speed and not practice or preseason speed. He gets to get hit. He gets to call plays in the huddle. He gets to take charge of an offense. He gets to take snaps without any expectations on his performance.
What's NOT good about any of that?
And the defense sucked.

Not to do so would be sheer insanity. Jones and Henson both need to see considerable playing time before we draft. Vinny gave it his best shot, but didn't have much help. Now that experiment is officially over.

I don't know. I'm just not sure the Eagles would be playing at "real speed" when ahead 49-21. Prevent defense in a blowout is pretty similar to pre-season football you would have to admit. It wouldn't have hurt for him to play I will agree...I'm just so upset with the defense tonight that I don't have the energy to worry about garbage time for Hensen. Even the Chiefs and Colts defense looked twice as good as what we throw out there week after week. That's friggin' sad!

We sure lit up that score board with Vinny against their prevent. ;)
They were throwing with a 21 point lead, they were not backing off at all.

You are probably right. I just wish we had played "real defense" against McNabb and that "star disrespector" named Terrell Owens. We have forced FIVE turnovers all season!!! That's so pathetic I don't know what to say. I watched almost every game Sunday and you have to be in a coma to not at least force ONE fumble or int. Man we are in sad defensive shape!!

Man, I hope not... But it's not out of the question.
Aikman was asked on his show on the Ticket last week about Parcells' 60 Minutes comment that he wanted to show he could still win with the old guys from the Jets... Remember when he said something like that, about showing the world they weren't washed up? Troy (to my surprise) said that could very well be the case.
Again... I hope not. Surely he isn't THAT stubborn. :(

You have to wonder what would have happened if we had gotten that "NON-FUMBLE" early on.
A bad angle by Dixon, two missed sacks by Carson and we give up 21 points.

That Eddie George fumble at the Philly 20 when we could have tied the score 7-7 was huge. Then to add insult to injury, we had them stopped after that turnover. But when Fraizer muffed the punt, it was 14-0 and the Eagles never looked back due to our shltty defense!

That's not true for Henson, though, because it would be paid as a roster bonus next year. He has roster bonuses in 2005, 2006 and 2007 tied to those incentives, and he can earn only one of them. So if he reaches the incentives this year, he gets the roster bonus in 2005. If he reaches the incentives in 2005, he gets the roster bonus in 2006. And the same goes for 2006; he'd get it in 2007.

The only reason I continued to watch the game was to see if BP would put Henson in with 4 minutes left. Hell, the Eagles took McNabb out because the game was out of reach. That's what you do want when games are obviously decided. You take your starters out and play guys that normally dont play because it gets them some sort of experience.
Putting Henson in would have killed alot of butterflies he's GONNA feel whenever he first gets out there. You put him in with 4 mintues left and there are NO expectations. NONE! Just go throw the ball around a little, hand it off, heck stretch your legs. Everyone saw that VT was not the cause of the loss tonight. I bet 95% of the people watching the game were looking for BP to throw Henson out there for garbage time.
And if you didnt Henson out there because of his incentives. Give Tony Romo some time. See what he has. DO SOMETHING BP
