Obviously loosing Woodson's leadership has hurt the defense, specifically Roy and the rest of the secondary.
How underrated was Mario on this defense?
We need a total overhaul on D this offseason. Roy, TNew and Ellis are the only untouchables at this point as far as Im concerned and TNew and Roy are getting mulligans because they're young and have the pedigrees.
This is sad, just sad that we have slid this far.

The problem is that the D completely overacheived last year. And, as good as their overall "ranking" was, I would bet that most coaches, scouts, GM's, etc.... would NOT have deemed them the best defensive unit in the league last year. Just like this year, they couldn't rush the passer w/o blitzing and the couldn't create mant TO's.
I' really looking forward to what is going to happen on that side of the ball for '05. Because, no matter how much re-tooling the O needs, the D needs 10x more work.

Yeah, I think the Cowboys took that #1 ranking to heart thinking it was all Zimmer's technique/scheming and Parcells' talent evaluation. Injuries to our #2 CB that would've been lucky to be a dime CB anywhere else, the waiving of DL depth (Blade, Stewart, Ekuban) and Mario Edwards, losing Woodson, keeping Dixon, signing Wiley...it's all a recipe for disaster. The defense was really good last season and only needed some additions...not subtractions. Kearse would've made the DL that much better. No way does McNabb run around for 14 seconds with Kearse in there. Sure, he's had injury problems but Kearse on one leg is better than Dat Dude.

The D sucked last year too...vs any team that was half way good...Problem was, too many fans thought it was good last year...
When in fact we didn't get to the QB or get turnovers then ether...
You just don't win with a passive & predictable "occupy & engage" never pressure a QB awful zimmy WUSS scheme...

i'm giving the d the benefit of the doubt. we simply were not talented enough to lose that many guys and still be productive.
you can see how a bad secondary has a trickle effect on the whole defense.
what a nightmare.

Bad secondary and a bad DL...not a good combo.
The DL is the first thing that needs addressing, followed by the secondary...although it's tough to tell how bad the DB's really are since QB's are getting 14 SECONDS TO THROW THE BALL.

The secondary is worse this year, no doubt about it. But when you consider that what Culpepper, Favre, and McNabb did to us this year is just more of what Fiedler, McNabb, and Delhomme did to us last year (with Wodson and Edwards playing), it hasn't really slid that much.

Just be thankful Indy isnt on the schedule too. Prolly make last nights games seem like a halfway decent defensive effort.

That's what Spags has been saying this past year. Both this year & last, we really were only successful against bad teams. If Mortensen is right from last night, we'll be seeing a major overhaul of the team this offseason.

The Boys are going to be "extremely aggressive" in FA and will use that cap space.

I hope so. What they did last offseason was pathetic.
I wonder how much we are under the cap now?

The 2 main drawbacks to last year's ranking was: 1) Zimmer getting a raise; and 2) the team believing their own press.
The Cowboys went into the off-season believing nothing was wrong on D, and didn't do much to upgrade the unit, thinking if it ain't broke don't fix it - problem was the D was broke

Yes but surely a brilliant HOF coach like Parcells could differentiate between a legitimately good defense and what we actually fielded this season right?
