I guess Al Davis decided that 8 months was long enough to let him wonder and look over his shoulder.
Why would anyone want to work for that crazy old man?
I almost feel sorry for Raiders fans.
Nah, actually I don't feel sorry for them at all.

This is the best thing that could happen to Kiffin. He's a bright young coach who was doing a good job considering what he had going against him. Al Davis seriously needs to just go away, the Raiders will never be a winning franchise again until he does.

If Kiffen had quit, he would've forfeited something like 3 million which Al Davis owed him. In the end, he looks a lot smarter than the Cryptkeeper even though he's (temporarily) out of work.

From PFT:
Per Mortensen, Davis told Kiffin that he is terminating him without pay, and that Kiffin should not expect to receive the remaining money due him on his contract. It’s safe to assume Kiffin and his agent/lawyer will have something to say about that.
John Clayton reported on ESPN that Kiffin is still owed $3.5 million.

Not a bad start...............
It's hard to believe anybody would take that HC job. That franchise is a farce.
The only guy who might take it is Ryan, their DC.
The nfl should step in and help them fix the franchise.
The league has no business telling the owners how to run their franchise.

In the end, money talks...Even to be a whipping boy, someone will jump at being a HC there...Except, it will never be a blue chip coaching prospect...Instead, it'll be someone trying to climb the ladder there.
The thing that I find interesting isn't so much Kiffin (Kudos for sticking it to the idiot) but the rest of the Raider coaching staff...Talk about backstabbing corporate climbers...You're not going to endear yourself for future jobs by whoring yourself out to Davis at the expense of running a solid chain of coaching command there...Sounds like it was a coaching nightmare for Kiffin as his staff was all looking to get ahead without regard for the work.
So, yeah, in the end money talks

Who knows?...Maybe he stinks as a coach, maybe he's great...I do know, he showed some great character in all of this

It's being reported that Davis won't pay Kiffin ... that Davis has been making a list of Kiffin's supposed "insubordinate" actions in the past several months and will use that to get out of paying.
Mortensen reported that Davis fired Shanahan four games into the season 20 years ago and that Shanahan never got his money.

If Kiffin's lawyer was smart he knew about the Shanahan situation and wrote language in the contract to make sure he got paid if he got fired.

CABLE WILL SUCCEED KIFFIN
Posted by Mike Florio on September 30, 2008, 2:29 p.m.
We suppose it’s fitting that Lane Kiffin, who was generally unknown when he was hired in early 2007 to coach the Raiders, will be replaced by another guy who is generally unknown.
Offensive line coach Tom Cable will take over the reins, according to Adam Schefter of NFLN.
Cable, 43, previously served as offensive line coach in Atlanta, and was the head coach at Idaho from 2000 through 2003. Cable also served as offensive coordinator at UCLA in 2004 and 2005.
It had been believed in some circles that the internal candidates would be James Lofton, Paul Hackett, and Rob Ryan. In the end, only Hackett was interviewed for the job.

IT’S OFFICIAL: KIFFIN IS OUT
Posted by Mike Florio on September 30, 2008, 2:19 p.m.
After months of speculation, the Oakland Raiders finally have fired coach Lane Kiffin.
Here’s the text of the release: “Lane Kiffin has been released as head coach of The Oakland Raiders for cause. The Raiders will address the media at 2 p.m. this afternoon (Tuesday) at the team’s permanent facility in Alameda.”
The phrase “for cause” is a legal buzz word for, “And we ain’t payin’ him any more money.”
It has been apparent for a while now that the Raiders and Kiffin have been engaged in a game of buyout roulette, with the team trying to conjure evidence to support stiffing him and Kiffin trying to get himself fired in a manner that would nevertheless entitle him to get paid.
Though it’s likely that general counsel Jeff Birren has a laundry list of actual and/or perceived grounds to support the termination “for cause,” the Raiders likely won’t have as easy of a time with Kiffin’s coming grievance as they did with the claim made by former front office employee Mike Lombardi, who sought a contract buyout even though he . . . had . . . no . . . contract.

It's all about taking a chance.
You know if you turn it around there, with al as your HC, than you can pretty much name your next coaching job and probably be in the NFL for years even if you suck as a coach on other NFL teams.
Plus sometimes it is with coaches that will never have a shot at a HC job like that so they have to take it and the money.
I don't think you will see another serious coach with a good NFL resume even consider it. It will be nobodies until Al leaves.

When it is hurting the league they do. The raiders are an important franchise imo. I dont think it would hurt if they helped them out.
on the flip side of that. It will never happen, davis wont take anything from anyone and I am pretty sure most of the league hates the guy, so most teams probably enjoy kicking their tails every week.

Yep, it's not a job for the longterm, but it's not a bad stepping stone job. It's really almost a no-lose situation; no badly how badly your teams stink no one is going to blame you for it.
Everyone laughed at Kiffin when he was hired because he was just a quarterback coach at USC, and now he's name that people actually respect and I suspect he'll probably get an OC position in the NFL this offseason. He defintely got to skip a few rungs on the coaching ladder, and added NFL head coaching experience to his resume.

If anybody's thinking about the NFL being "involved" with "helping" the Raiders franchise, consider the history of antagonism between Davis and the NFL. He's been involved in legal action on seeral occasions. I can't think of a single owner with a poorer history of relationships with NFL commissioners than Al Davis. He's still living with the idea that the Raiders are doing their "Committment to Excellence" shtick. He used to brag about them being the most successful franchise in the history of the NFL. The bottom line is that Al does things his way. Period. Believe it or not, Jerry Jones is one the owners that Davis has a decent relationship with. Why anybody with any sense of pride would work for Davis is something I'll never understand.

DAVIS ACCUSES KIFFIN OF PROPAGANDA, LYING
Posted by Mike Florio on September 30, 2008, 5:34 p.m. EDT
At the outset of a stunningly candid press conference regarding the team’s decision to fire coach Lane Kiffin, Raiders owner Al Davis explained that Kiffin was fired for “propanganda” and “lying” that had gone on for months. Kiffin was “bringing disgrace to the organization,” Davis said, calling Kiffin on multiple times a “flat-out liar.”
One thing is clear to us: The 79-year-old Davis still seems to be as sharp mentally as he ever has been, and we tend to believe every word he’s saying.
He claims that Kiffin at some point got the idea in his head that he could get out of his contract and still get paid, and that Kiffin tried to accomplish it by complaining regularly about his situation.
Davis went on to read from a three-page letter given to Kiffin on the Friday before the Week Two game against the Chiefs, which letter was prompted by Kiffin’s comments that he has no involvement in the defense, and that coordinator Rob Ryan works directly with Davis on this point.
Also, Davis said that Kiffin called every play on offense during his time with the team, and that he split the play-calling duties with an unnamed assistant coach on Sunday against the Chargers.
After the Week Three loss to the Bills, Davis said that he asked Kiffin point-blank why he didn’t use his final two time outs. “He takes exception when you question him,” Davis said.
Davis then made a snide remark regarding the 76-yard-field goal attempt at the end of the first half of the Week Four loss to the Chargers, which prompted us to question whether Kiffin was trying to get himself fired.
Asked whether Kiffin was daring Davis to fire him, Davis said, “That’s a good question.”
The rift apparently arose seven months ago. Davis said that Kiffin wanted to his father, Monte Kiffin, to run the defense — and that Monte Kiffin wanted to do it. Davis claims that the Raiders opted not to pursue the elder Kiffin because he was under contract with the Bucs.
Davis denied sending Kiffin a resignation letter in the offseason. Davis claims that Kiffin wanted to fire defensive coordinator Rob Ryan after the 2007 season. “I can’t win with this guy,” Kiffin supposedly told Davis.
Davis said that Kiffin didn’t want to draft quarterback JaMarcus Russell, because Kiffin thought he’d be the “overweight guy” and the “uninterested guy.” Said Kiffin (per Davis), “We can’t win with this.”
Davis also confirmed that Kiffin wanted the Arkansas job, which Kiffin previously denied. Lane was “upset as hell” about it when Bobby Petrino left Atlanta to get the job. Kiffin then supposedly targeted another job.
As to reports that Kiffin was presented with a letter of resignation, Davis said that the document was an attempt to resolve Kiffin’s situation if he were to get another college job. Davis said that Kiffin, whom he called a “professional liar,” then turned that into a claim that Davis had presented him with a resignation letter.
Davis ended his remarks by stating unequivocally that the team will rebound from this, and that the Raiders will win.
We’ll update this thread as more comes out at the press conference, which can be viewed at NFL.com.

Al also said the following from his press conference:
"We can't bust heads like we used to. But we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Gimme five bees for a quarter, you'd say. Now where was I... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time. You couldn't get white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones..."
