View Full Version : How important is the debate tonight?

On a scale of 1-10, how important is tonight to both camps?
Looking at a summary of the most recently polling numbers, especially among likely voters (opposed to Registered ones). I think tonight is HUGE for McCain. He needed to answer the questions from the crowd and not do what Palin did by just talking about whatever she had studied. He needs to appears comfortable and relaxed. Calm and thoughtful.
This could be huge for Obama if he can connect with the people in the crowd. He needs to appear that he's having a conversation, and not just speaking his normal ole jibberish. He needs to handle the way he did during the economic issues over the past 2 weeks. He seemed calm and collected compared to an erratic man who was just throwing **** at the wall to see what sticks. But, that won't be enough. He might even need to say something like "This is what happens to a country when you pay for a War by cutting taxes.......and John McCain wants to fund a continued War by putting my kids......and your kids....further in debt. We need to suck it up and come together here to fix this, and it won't be easy". It would be a risky thing to say, but it could appear honest in light of the past few days from both sides.
Either way.
For McCain I say tonight for him is a 8. If he bombs, he's done unless there is a huge scandel.
For Obama I say its a 6. He needs to clearly lose to really drop here. A Tie = Win for him at this point.
Thoughts?
Not very.
Right after the first one most analysts said it was a draw with a slight lean to McCain and days later Obama moved up in the polls.
It appears the mindless just want generic "change".

Well I think your argument holds about right that it has to be a clear and demanding win for McCain for it to make much of a difference.
However in response to Bach. We have seen in the past where a Candidate goes into a debate, and even been considered to lose a prior one, only to come back strong and win the election.
Nothing is over at this point.

I expect Barry to play defense and try to look presidential....Johnny will be in attack mode, grind his teeth and jaw, and look angry. He will win on substance, but the MSM will say Barry won.

I agree it isn't over, and this environment can flip very quickly.
But, I think this is being listed as McCain's strong suit. But, does that count for town halls where he's not alone?

Really don't know how this plays out.
One thing I would like to see play out is to see people in the audience take both candidates to task when they are asked a question but instead go in a different direction and not even remotely come close to the topic being asked.

I think it is critical for McCain to come out of this debate and regain some lost ground.

Personally, I hate debates.
I'd rather the two go into sound proof rooms and then answer the exact same questions without knowing the others answer....and without being allowed to talk about the other guy. Only talk about what YOU stand for...and what YOU would do.
Then let the voters compare.

If it's not, it's close.
But one positive about an Obama win is that after two years of him along with a Democrat controlled Congress and Senate led by extreme liberals like Pelosi and Reid, there will definitely be major change the next Congressional elections, similar to 1994. Also, I think it'd energize the Republicans to put up an actual conservative in '12 instead of a moderate like McCain again.

I don't mind debates and I think this format is the best because it is not a media member asking the question it is regular people with real concerns.

If the GOP can repair the damage done to their party by Bush, then yes.
I think it'll take longer. They need to lose this election. Then gain some seats back in '12 with new blood....then make a move in '16.
Just like '92 to 2000

Although you think I am a big Obama supporter...this is another thing I have talked about time and time again.
I NEVER like the idea of a party controlling congress and the presidency. It puts WAY too much power into one parties hands.
We seen it with the dems and clinton and we seen it with the repubs and W.
Almost always winds up causing an abuse of power by a party and wide spread corruption.
So that is just another reason I don't want to see Obama as the next President.
Now...I wonder if I will get accused of being in the Bag for McCain now.:laugh2:

There is not doubt that BP is not in the bag for Barry....he is independent for the most part. I really think he hates everyone. :)

So you think Obama gets two terms?

I think if Obama wins (if). He would be a good position to get two terms. Unless he royally blows it. Not because he's great. But because the next 4 years will be considered cleaning up after the Worst President of Modern History.
People aren't going to forget George Bush so quickly.

Jimmy Carter still easily holds that title, unless you don't consider the '70's "modern history".
As for '12, I think it all depends on who ends up being the Repub. candidate. But if the Dems control Congress the next four years with Obama, then I don't see him winning a second term, unless the Repubs blow it with their nominee.

Current polls show that Bush is more unpopular than Carter was at his worst.
the 70's is modern history, and W set a new standard for "Bad".

This is because it's "current". Carter's administration was easily the worst in the modern era and after we get further removed from the present I'm sure history will concur.

I believe history will show this to be the worst. If it was just the economy, then maybe you'd be right.
But the War puts W over the top.

I watched the first debate and the VP debate... I think I'm done with debates for this election.
I just got Dexter Season 2 from Netflix and I think I'm going to start with that tonight instead.

I don't think you'll be able to help yourself, DW. If nothing else, just to be up on who said what.
As for me, I'll prolly have it playing in the background while working.

I already know what they're going to say... I got an early transcript:
OBAMA: blah blah blah Change.
MCCAIN: blah blah blah Experience.
OBAMA: blah blah blah just like Bush.
MCCAIN: blah blah blah Maverick.

There is not a true undecided voter left.
So these debates really mean nothing.
The only thing left to figure out is if the Polls are a true reflection on how the vote is gonna go.
I do not think they are.
But I still think Obama has the edge.
Gonna depend on how many of the silent majority of conservatives actually take the time to vote for McCain.

Actually Obama has done that. Problem was that although McCain claimed to be in the sound proof room, he was not as he was running late.
You don't remember the whole cone of silence thing?
