Lawmaker's son indicted in Palin e-mail hacking
By DOUGLASS K. DANIEL
WASHINGTON - A federal grand jury has indicted the son of a Democratic Tennessee state lawmaker in connection with the hacking of the e-mail account of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
David Kernell, 20, of Knoxville, Tenn., the son of state Rep. Mike Kernell, was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge C. Clifford Shirley, according to a statement from the Justice Department.
David Kernell was indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury in Knoxville for intentionally accessing without authorization the e-mail account of Palin, Alaska's governor, the Justice Department said.
Kernell, an economics major at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, faces a maximum of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine and a three-year term of supervised release.
His father, a Memphis Democrat, is chairman of Tennessee's House Government Operations Committee. Mike Kernell has said he had nothing to do with the hacking incident.
The indictment against David Kernell alleged that on Sept. 16 he reset the password to Palin's personal e-mail account to gain access to it. Authorities say Kernell then read the contents of the account and made screenshots of the e-mail directory, e-mail content and other personal information, later posting some of the information to a public Web site.
The Justice Department said the case was being prosecuted by section chief Michael DuBose and trial attorney Mark Krotoski of the criminal division's computer crime and intellectual property section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Weddle of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Tennessee. The FBI's Anchorage and Knoxville field offices investigated the case.

Good. I hope the SOB enjoys his 5 years in the Federal pen. It really is amazing the lengths democrats will go to support their savior.

Not really sure... college kid... maybe because it's there... political motives since his dad is a Democrat...
Whatever they were, he has royally screwed himself. I doubt he'll serve any time, but employers won't be lining up to hire him unless his dad can pull some political strings...

He should do something with computers since he wants to hack people's emails. Although doing that kind of stuff isn't hard.

What he did was not too much once most of the info came out. He did some social engineering/research and got lucky.
Initially I believed he was a member of a hacker community because he posted the stuff on one of the sites they frequent...However by not covering his tracks well it became pretty evident he was not what one would consider a hardcore knowledgeable hacker/cracker.
Either way not matter if he knew what he was doing or not, no matter his motivations behind it...it is flat out wrong and he deserves to have the book thrown at him.

It's invasion of privacy and I am dead set against that. I have serious problems with that. I am not one that has no problems with the government doing invasion of privacy things like some were and I am not going to do a 180 on this issue because it is against a particular party.
It is flat out wrong and IMO much worse than getting a password to a porn site or something.
But that is just my opinion on it.
I'm silly like that when it comes to privacy rights.

Hacking into someones personal mail is like getting a porn password?
Thats like saying stealing someones mail out of their mailbox is the same as taking their newspaper out of their yard.

and there are those, like me now especially, for whom it's a must. I have to deal with confidential material via email quite a bit. I don't like it, but I have no other choice...

I hope this Kid gets some sort of judicial punishment but I don't hope he spends 5 years. What he did was wrong. Very wrong but I suspect that what he did was encourage by others. Those individuals will likely skate while this kid of 20 years will suffer the brunt of it all. Where's the justice in that? He made a mistake. Nothing really came of it, though the Democratic Party hoped they would find evidence that would ruin Palin. All it did, so far as I can tell, is make here stronger.
It's unfortunate that this is what it has come down to but know, I don't hope this Kids life is ruined over this. I hope he sees that winning at all costs is never the answer.

Sorry, this kid deserves no mercy. He knew exactly what he was doing and he knew it was illegal. Time to take responsibility for your actions. Wonder if he will get the cell next to vick.

You say that as if it party affiliation matters. History has shown that there are people out there that will go to great lengths to support their candidates. It is not limited to just democrats.
Stupid kid who deserves his punishment.
Did they ever find the hackers who hacked a Shiite cleric's web site a couple of weeks ago?

One group posts on there from time to time. I did not say that it was a hacker site itself, just that some post there. Just wanted to clarify that.
