From "The One" to "That One": McCain remark irks

By Andy Sullivan1 hour, 40 minutes ago

What a difference a word makes. Republican John McCain's presidential campaign has nicknamed rival Barack Obama "The One" to ridicule what they see as the Democratic candidate's messianic tendencies.

For McCain himself, Obama is simply "that one."

Referring to an energy bill during Tuesday's debate, McCain said: "You know who voted for it? You might never know."

"That one," he said, pointing to Obama.

McCain was criticized after the first presidential debate on September 26 for refusing to look at Obama.

The Obama campaign seized on Tuesday's remark as further evidence of McCain's contempt for his opponent in the November 4 election.

"Last time he couldn't look at Senator Obama, this time he couldn't say his name," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said after the debate. McCain did refer to his opponent as Senator Obama at other times in the debate.

Obama's vice presidential running mate, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, was more forgiving.

"I think when John knows he's sort of in an attack mode, it's always kind of difficult to look the other person in the eye," Biden said on ABC's "Good Morning America."

"I think it reflects more his ill-at-ease with the attack he has under way," Biden said.

The McCain campaign dismissed complaints about the comment. "I am shocked that they are again proving to be the fussiest campaign in American history," advisor Nicole Wallace told CBS News.

Others were jarred by the remark. Washington Post columnist Tom Shales called it "demeaning, nasty."

"The snarled 'that one' also contributed to McCain's image as a kind of mean old Scrooge, not so much a battle-scarred warrior as an embittered one," Shales wrote.

"That one" may have been a spontaneous comment, but "The One" has been a deliberate part of the campaign's communications strategy.

The McCain campaign on Tuesday handed out cuff links to reporters emblazoned with a mock presidential seal for Obama and "The One" engraved in script on the back.

A Web ad released by the McCain campaign in August mocked Obama as "The One" and compared him to Moses parting the Red Sea.

The Obama campaign has condemned the nickname as "juvenile."

This and the tire gauges from a few weeks ago just show how stupid, childish and out of touch this campaign crew is.

I actually appreciate McCain's sense of humor but instead of coming across as a good-natured prankster he is appearing sophomoric and juvenile.

Funny that other than the far left bloggers and some in the MSM, no one gives a crap about this comment. It was a strange thing to say, but harmless.

Talk about lipstick on a pig!

It only plays if you are playing to a partican crowd. When you make these kinds of jokes, if nobody is laughing, then it kinda goes over like a lead ballon. Nobody is laughing because the crowds are not partican and they are not allowed to laugh, even if they found humor in it. It's a poor strategy IMO.

I don't even think this was McCain in these two instances. Could very well be but I think it is more of his campaign workers.

I don't mind the jokes he does during debates, although sometimes you hear crickets chirping when he tells them. I did laugh at the jello line he did last night.

I actually can appreciate someone who pokes fun at himself, like the hair transplant lines or the age lines he does.

But this is just different IMO. They are just silly like the obama paris hilton ad.

Silly, juvenile and wasting money in a time when they are preaching of reform.

Agreed and you kind of feel bad for him when it happens. The jokes I mean not the other things.

I don't even think he knows he is going to do it in some cases. Some just have a quick quip type of thing that flies out without thinking.

Again I don't mind that kind of thing.

Just not the other things I talked about.

That's exactly what I had in mind. That and the cuff links almost seem petulant, resentful, and ultimately envious.

He should have said: "That young feller o'er there."

or...GET OUT OF MY YARD. :laugh2:

Just a silly thing by McCain...but cries of racism seem pretty darn stupid over that.

It would have been good if he'd have been able to work "Whipper-snapper" in somehow.
