WEST HOLLYWOOD -- Is it a Hollywood decoration or a sick political statement?
Either way, some people in West Hollywood say a mannequin resembling Sarah Palin hanging from a noose is simply bad taste.
The mannequin is complete with glasses, a beehive wig and a red business suit.
People are stopping to take pictures of the effigy, and tour buses have included the display on their daily routes.
The home also has an effigy of Republican presidential candidate, Sen. John McCain, popping out of a chimney surrounded by fake flames.
Neighbors say whether it's Halloween or not, the display has got to go.
"I know it's Halloween, but when you're using a vice presidential candidate with a noose around her neck, that to me has gone too far," a man identified only as "George" says.
"Whether I'm Republican or Democrat, it's not about that. It's just wrong."
Some concerned callers have reported the display as a hate crime so a special hate crime unit is investigating, West Hollywood Sheriff Sgt. Kristin Aloma said
The creator of the display, Chad Michael Morrisette says the mannequin may be unacceptable any other month, but he says it's Halloween and that makes it okay.
"It should be seen as art and it should be seen within the month of October. It's time to be scary and spooky," Morrisette said.
"I know if we had done it with Barack Obama, people would've probably thrown things through our windows," Morrisette said.
"The image of a hanged black man is a lot more intense than the image of a hanged white woman -- for our country -- in the history of our country."
Some neighbors say the mannequin is just funny and shouldn't be taken so seriously. "This is West Hollywood, after all," he said.
"It was kind of cruel, but it made me laugh, too. What can I say?"
The Republican vice presidential candidate is not considered to be a friend of the gay community and has been the subject of rumors throughout West Hollywood in recent days.
First, there was word the city was going to ban Sarah Palin drag queens at its upcoming costumed street party, which draws some 500,000 people annually.
But, that rumor turned out to be false.
The 21st annual Halloween Carnaval will be held from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday along Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood. The street will be closed for the event.

Well, perhaps it is someone's interpretation of Palin after the Couric interview. It's hard to say. But I don't think the mannequin looks like her at all. Maybe something like this would fit closer:

It's probably just a reaction to the hanging scarecrow with a NObama/****** sign attached to it. The story's about a week old and wasn't important enough to me to bookmark, though (I've long accepted that most people's moral development ceases at preconventional levels, no need to collect evidence). So no link to the picziez.

Nice equivocating. The US is only racist in 2 colors the rest evidently can go to hell, crimes were never perpetrated against asians, native americans, hispanics, just blacks pushing back against whites and whites pushing on blacks. The sad part is no one today was alive during slavery but yet they all act like it was 10 years ago for them. Get over it every country has its skeletons, ask Canada about their genocide to Natives in the last 30-50 years.

Again, both acts are disgusting, but a black doll hanging from a rope has a more historical significance.
Also, it has nothing to do with slavery. The so called "Lynching Era" was roughly around the 1890s to around the 1940s.
That wasn't that long ago. There are definately people still alive that experienced that.
Also, I don't need to know you have indian ancestry, that is irrelevant to the discussion.

My point being everyone is racist, bringing it up doesn't make it go away, on the contrary I think it stokes the fire a little more. What you need to do is just teach people to keep their mouths shut if they have nothing nice to say, oops can't do that Golden rule and the whole separation of church and state myth, otherwise there would be no "racism".

Know whats odd... When someone talks about hanging or lynching, I don't think blacks.. I think horse thieves, murderers, treason, etc. It's not until people talk about it being a black thing that I think that. My world has always been colorblind.. I'm indian and my children that I adopted are half hispanic. My best friend is black/hispanic. ANd the sad thing is that I don't feel guilty about what happened decades upon decades before I was born... I get angry that racism gets pushed in my face and getting called a racist or bigot... I'm personally sick of it getting shoved down my throat all the time when I don't practice racism.
When I posted the hanging thread.. it wasn't a black thing vs white thing in my mind... it was a stupid stupid prank by someone that has no respect for the political system and in my eyes, made what could be a threat to someone that was willing to put everything on the line for their sorry butt.

I'd have to disagree with you on this....even though it's the past it shouldn't be swept under the rug. There is a big difference between a white person being hung and a black being hung. If you consider the way blacks used to be treated and strung up and hung then it's a clear as day....whether you want to accept that fact or not is something completely different.

I think your statement is off base and really ridiculous just because something doesn't effect us today doesn't mean it's not something that still haunts us nor is it something we can turn a blind eye to. It is something that we have to live with and something we will have to overcome. You're right racism isn't just blacks on whites however, a lot of stuff that happens is because of the stuff from the past. Like it makes no sense to me why things are they way they are and I really can't put it into words how these things are messed up however it's pretty easy to say something when you're on the other side of the fence.

this is true however you have to understand the nature of the world we live in even though you don't mean any harm by the thread. People will still find ways to get upset and find something obscene in it. All it takes is black + hanging and people will get upset. Also factor in the civil rights movement was to far off a lot of that hatred that people grew up with is still burning in their hearts and stuff.....Just out of curiosity why did you feel the need to state your best friend was black and hispanic ?

Yea because I would like to see the source....because I'm looking at the stuff right now and I can't find those numbers anywhere.......There's also a difference between random violent crimes against females and domestic violence. The odds of a female being a victim of a violent crime are low.
Just to piggy back off of this...It's not just females either the odds of people being a victim of a violent crime however it's a common misconception throughout the public that violent crimes is at high rates when in jail they make up the smallest population most of jail is with drug dealers and such. That's just one of the problems with the current criminal justice system. Yeah like I was saying it does make a difference and I also mentioned the paradox of fear earlier.

Some people are just freaking stupid and could use a good smack upside the head.

I'd have to disagree with you on this....even though it's the past it shouldn't be swept under the rug. There is a big difference between a white person being hung and a black being hung. If you consider the way blacks used to be treated and strung up and hung then it's a clear as day....whether you want to accept that fact or not is something completely different.

this is true however you have to understand the nature of the world we live in even though you don't mean any harm by the thread.
For the same reason I stated I was indian and my children were half Hispanic.. It's what I surround myself with. A melting pot of different nationalities and race. And because Rep and Conservs are being lumped together as racists all over this board. Several have been called racist and I know they aren't.. Me, Danny White, Trick and Cajun to name a few.... Because of that I've been feeling like I have to be more specific in who's in my life. Being called a racist upsets me... It's like saying I hate my children and best friend.. And thats not fair...
Thats why I did that.

However, even though it is disgusting, it is odd to not be able to see the difference between this and someone hanging one of a Black person, given our nation's past.

Dude... you are the single biggest elitist on this board... bar NONE...
Now, you may wear that as a badge of courage... many of us don't...
I categorically deny the charge. :p:
I have made two arguments with respect to Ivy League schools which seem fairly commonsensical to me:
1. On average, it's probable that people graduating from Harvard possess greater general intelligence than graduates of the University of Idaho.
2. An Ivy League degree confers more prestige than one from most other schools (University of Chicago and Stanford being exceptions).
I also routinely speak out against the overt anti-intellectualism of the republican party which has manifested itself most recently with the Palin candidacy. I think it's a mistake and does a disservice to a long tradition of conservative thought.
Now, if some of you guys want to interpret that as meaning I disdain all other institutions of higher learning and think that conservatives are stupid, that's your prerogative. But I would suggest that your reaction says less about me and more about the sort of oversensitive and defensive mentality that is fostered and conditioned by the culture wars.

I think you're advancing the elitist position in so far as you're denying the commonly held assumption of Ivy League prestige.
Not that it can be verified, but I would wager that if you traveled around rural communities across this country and asked people which sounds more prestigious, Harvard or University of Idaho (or even Rice), the overwhelming response would be the former (in the latter case for no other reason than Joe sixpack types outside of Texas have probably never heard of it).

I think it's interesting that we seem to link education and elite together so frequently.
For example, I'd imagine that if you asked a person who might represent the elite more accurately, a Harvard Professor or a highly succesful business owner, the answer might be the succesful business owner.
I don't know this to be a fact but I'd imagine it to be true. Now, you can be both I suppose but that's not usually the case.
Elite are not necessarily associated with education or educators, as it were.

As with anything, the Texas language has evolved over time. That's how a term such as "Y'all" can replace "All y'all."
