What are your opinions about Diet drinks besides the fact that a lot of them taste nasty? Has anyone had any issues with Aspartame that you feel caused any issues with your body? I have read a lot of information on both sides and each side swears the other is wrong.

I like my diet sodas everything is going to kill me so what ever
most packaged foods have more salt than you need in a day which can lead to blood pressure.
Then lets not talk about High fructose corn syrup which is worse than Aspartame yet the majority of your foods are sweetened with it over sugar because it is cheaper
Come on it is all going to kill us and then again if you eat some of the stuff our parents ate it could kill you because of other things
Damed if you do damed if you don't

I agree and that's been my take ever since I started drinking them from the early 80s. The problem is I have had some symptoms that no allergy doctor can explain or my regular doctor along with CT scans and blood work. I was just trying to rule stuff out of my diet.

Try not using any soda at all to test it. Some sodas have splenda but they are saying that will hurt you to.

Diet Sodas give me major gas. And the gas comes out smelling like burnt rubber (like when you spin your tires).
From what I understand, aspartame - when combined with the acids in your stomach - turns into phermaldrihyde (sp?). You know that stuff that the frogs/worms were dipped in high school biology class? That's the stuff. Or something like it.
So the more aspartame you drink, the more phermaldrihyde it forms in your stomach.
And FYI, phermaldrihyde is bad for you... to say the least.

I was having such bad symptoms that I thought it was a food allergy and avoided eating a food only to find the next week something else caused it. I got off of Aspartame and in two days I felt better. However I am feeling bad again so its either it wasn't bad to begin with or it takes awhile to detox yourself from all that junk for many years. Who knows....

If you're feeling bad again it's probably just withdrawal symptoms.
I was as addicted to sodas as anyone, but I finally kicked the habit. Next monday will be 6 weeks I've gone w/o drinking ANY kind of soda, and I feel better than I have in years.

I'm not kicking the habit cold turkey on sodas but I also can't afford to drink the high calorie ones like I did the diet ones unless I increase my cardio more. I can't stand tea so maybe Ill drink some lemonade that is non sweetened with Aspartame.

I'm actually surprised at how easy it was for me to go cold turkey. I've rarely had any cravings in the last 6 weeks.
You just have to REALLY want to kick the habit.

I got into a debate with a co-worker that is severely overweight about diet drinks and aspertame.
When I did research on aspertame on the Internet several years back, I really didn't find too much of a health issue with it.
There was one illness that could be excacerbated by Aspertame but though the name of it escapes me at the moment, it is something all babies are tested for and therefore you would already know not to drink any substance that has aspertame in it.
However, like another co-worker stated when I debated that Diet Drinks weren't worth it, the only problem is that you could be drinking water instead.

Aspartame is broken down to aspartic acid, methanol, and something like phenylalalalanine. All are found naturally in other foods you eat. The issue is that in nature, the foods that have methanol also have ingredients that offset the methanol (e.g. ethanol).
Methanol is not good for you, which is about as obvious as saying your car's antifreeze isn't good for you. And to to what Rack said, the methanol is broken down to formaldahyde, which is worse. I stopped looking into it after I found out about formaldahyde.
It's the other "controversial" food additive, high fructose corn syrup, that is the safe one (as much as sugar is safe).

Artificial sweeteners give me migraines (either from the chemicals or the pervasive aftertaste--we never figured out which), so I can't weigh in on the long-term effects, but there are sodas out there like IZZE that are basically carbonated fruit juice that I like instead of regular soda. I totally recommend. They still have carbs/calories (about half of regular soda), but they're from fruit instead of added sugar/syrup.

This is the best information I've ever taken from this board right here. Now I know that if I want to preserve a dead frog I can just fart on him!

I like diet drinks. Not because I am worried about my weight or a diet freak. I am fat and I am ok with that.
What I like about them is that they normally do not go flat as fast as the regular drinks.
Get a bottle of regular Coke and a bottle of diet. Open each bottle take a few drinks, put the lid back on.
Live them sitting out for the rest of the day or even over night. Then try them again. Most times the regular coke will be flat, and in turn too sweet, however the diet coke will taste the same and many times will not be flat, or completely flat.
I usually drink diet rite tangerine at home. I will leave a can out over night and it is still fresh in the morning. So I don't waste as much because once a drink goes flat I just don't like to drink it.
As far as what is good or bad for you, If I worried about everything that is bad for you concerning foods or non alcohol beverages I would never enjoy anything.
Also concerning if this contains a chemical that converts to phermaldrihyde within the stomach. Well while in Korea I did go to bars and drink Soju which was said to contain phermaldrihyde ....never did anything other than get me drunk and I would imagine that diet drinks do not have enough to hurt you unless you consumed large doses for many years...but who knows.
I mainly drink them because they do not go flat, or it takes a long time before they do and I like the taste of my diet rite tangerine...they also seem to have more of a bite to them in the flavor if that makes sense.

If you seen my toenails, you would never ask that question. You would beg me to go and get pedicure done as I look like I have Hobbit feet.:laugh2:
Also the fancy pants line is funny because I have my email at work set up so it plays a line from the Army of Darkness where it says....Well Hello Mr Fancy Pants. :laugh2:

I kicked the habit about a year ago by drinking lots of green tea. It compensated for the caffeine fix. Then I gradually drank less and less tea.

I hate Diet anything, it always leaves an after taste.
I love cokes of any kind. I give them up every year for lent, and have a head ache for two days, then its over. I just like cokes for meals and such because you don't have other options at most restaraunts besides water.
