Yes, that's my solution for the auto industry.
I swear, if each of the auto makers would create a "vintage" line of cars it would prompt a whole new buyer.
Think about it. Wouldn't you love to have a 68 'Stang? Or what about the 1971 Corvette?
But instead of finding them in used condition you get one brand new. Same specs and everything.
You would get the old farts like me who would love to relive the days of youth with a bit more wisdom and you would tap the young folks who like the classic look.
And make them easy to work on like the originals. To heck with the bogus CAFE standards. They are one of the contributing factors why they are in this problem along with the unions.
I hate the idea of the auto bail out. I hated the idea of the first one. Why is it that the first reaction to a crisis is "What can I get from the government?"
Even if this isn't the greatest idea, it's something to spark some interest in the American auto industry and get people back to looking at these manufacturers.

I have never understood why the Auto Companies never went back to some of their classic designs. I think you are right on about the interest that it would generate, regardless of how they built 'em even. Everybody has that car that thrilled them when they were 13 (or whenever) that they'd love to have, without all the problems of 30 years of wear and tear.
I think remanufactured 240Zs did pretty well, when they tried that. Me, I would love to get my hands on a new Falcon Futura.
Just because they are going modern doesn't mean they can't go retro as well.

Geez Viper, I missed that whole dang thread.
Well, we got that whole Great Minds thing going on I guess.
Seriously, can you imagine getting a brand new 72 Charger That you could actually work on yourself?
Man, I would be so happy, the next 4 years would fly by. :D

It's a gold mine they have been ignoring for some reason. There are several cars I would love to have, a 'Cuda being top on my list. My wife wants a 32 coup...:D

Maybe not the same thing exactly but...
I collect sports memorabilia and one of my favorite things are when the card companies do retro issues. They may have a 1972 design with current players. It's cool and nostalgic. But just think if we could get those great cars again. I long for the day when I can change my own carburetor again.

I like this idea. I bet collectors wouldn't though. It'd drive down the value of the classic cars that they own.

well they did do this. the challenger, the camero and the new 'stang are all retro. but to get the good ones, it's $40k and up.
in 1982 i told my mom auto makers need to go back to retro and she said there's likely a reason they didn't and i said one day the would. so i beat everyone to this topic as the viper came on the scene a few years later. : )
but i do wish they'd one the average person could afford. i'd love a new challenger but i'm not spending $50k on a car.

comic books have been reprinting their classics for years. never was sure if it devalued the original or just made it more popular. in the end it may not be a good analogy. :)

Only if they keep those late 60s and early 70s prices for the cars. I could go for a 68 Camaro SS at its original price.

Yeah.. well it is the way of things.. the shape of things to come... more options... EVERYTHING you want available to you.
The classic car collectors and restoration companies will have to reinvent themselves. Its been a free ride niche for a long time.... but things change.

Give me that or the Firebird in the same year and I would be happy.
Heck I like the new retro camaro because of similar lines.

i am mopar through and through but i LOVE that version of the camero, old and new. not wild about the dash, but the lines are perfect. i loved the 68 camaro that was 1/2 silver and 1/2 black.
i wish they'd have redone the 'cuda vs. the challenger.
oddly enough, i'd also consider an early 70s javalin with those rounded fenders in front.
in the end a 70 hemi cuda convertable.
Haven't they done this already, with the Mustang and the Charger?
They don't exactly look the same and they can't be built the same, because of environmental laws, I'm sure, but they tried to capture that essence.
The Mustang is great, but the Charger is already problematic for the one person I know who owns one.

HemiCudas rock...I am not a fan of convertibles due to my ear problems but would love to have a hemicuda just like the one in the phantasm movies.

They have done the charger, mustang, thunderbird, camaro will be out soon and they also did a terrible job with the GTO as it looks NOTHING like the original.

Well, it's not so much they were "ignoring"...after all, they've been doing the "retro" style for a while now, although it's only vaguely superficial. Make the Mustang *kinda* resemble the older ones through badges, grill design, and a few other bits here and there. Sorta retro-Camaro that was in the works before the bailout mess (you can bet those cars will be killed for sure now).
It's regulations. Some prudent, many not. Safety regulations, suplimental restraint systems, CAFE standards, impact-absorbing bumpers rather than the good-old-fashioned battering-ram bumpers...yeah. Those were the good old days. I had two '66 Fairlane 500s myself when I was in high-school, and shortly thereafter a '63 Falcon. I only had enough parts between the three to have one functional car at a time, but it was fun.

If this is it, it looks like a shaved Grand Prix...

challenger. the charger is a 4 door and of all the people i know w/one they're not having any problems. the sister car, magnum, i have and at 21k miles, no problems at all.
challenger is just now out and maybe i'm being sacreligious, but i don't like it all that much.

Interesting thought.
But I think the car companies have recycled so many old ideas.
I would rather see them move forward....try to push the envelope. I would love to see them make a car that's simple to use and fix...yet, progressive as far as fuels are concerned.

The Camaro isn't all that retro, and Ford is starting to de-retro their Mustang. The Challenger on the other hand is a thing of beauty, and the R/T (not top of the line, but still good!) has a base of around $30k. The one I ordered will be arriving sometime this week. Gonna add a new exhaust system and a CAI for about $1300 and it will most likely match, if not exceed a stock SRT for hp.

the camaro isn't retro?
heh, ok. i've owned nothing but mopars all my life but let's not get carried away here. the new camaro is 100% 1968.
the challenger isn't bad, no. but i've got that interior in my magnum. engine too for the most part. it's nice. it really is. but since i was a cuda fan and always thought the challenger was the generic version of it, i still do.
http://www.motorauthority.com/wp-content/uploads/Chrysler/Concepts/Chrysler/Barracuda/dodge_barracuda_concept_main01.jpg
now that's sweet!
or even:

they build that one i sell me some mutual funds and lose weight to fit in it.
the challenger is what it is. a nice car that in it's day played 2nd fiddle to the cuda. it's even debatable that challenger lives to a 2nd year right now and the camaro convertible is on indefinate hold.
don't get me wrong - you're getting one very sweet car. but i disagree on the place / status of the camaro. out of respect, i respect this one also and give it a slight edge to the challenger but behind my cuda above. :)

My mother has a 95 Toyota Tercel that gets 40MPG even now after 130,000 miles. There is no reason at all for any car getting less NOW with probably 15 years of more development and knowledge.
I have a 1943 Ford GTB Marine Weapons carrier that has the old Flathead 6. It will pass the 1993 emissions standards (friend of mine worked on it and just for fun hooked it up to be tested when I first got it running back in 94; we were bothed shocked when it passed= he did it twice, once after checking the calibration of the test equipment).
