I wouldn't exactly call Family Guy a show that 'didn't quite make it'. It's been hugely successful.

Family Guy, That 70's Show, Cheers, MASH, and Friends are sitcoms that I could watch till I die.

The West Wing, CSI, Law and Order, the stable of shows on Discovery/Military/NGEO, and a handful of miniseries make up the rest of my TV consumption.

The only ones I can think of that didn't quite make it were Boston Public, HBO's Deadwood, and HBO's Rome. They all started out strong but floundered within a few seasons.

Space: Above and Beyond= 1 season with so much promise but put up against 60 minutes.

Earth 2= a show that had so much potential if they had gone to a second season.

Roswell= a guilty pleasure that started very well then they got fixated on Heigle's boobs and soap opera.

China Beach= by far the best Vietnam series ever done; another year could have told a bunch more stories sadly.

There are a few otthers over the last 20 years that go along as well.

Frankly very few in the last 10 years or so that I care about at all.

I agree with Deadwood... that show really needed two more seasons to finish the story arc. Anything much more than that would have been too much, but it ended prematurely.

Firefly is another show that, while I didn't watch it at the time, I've since seen all the episodes on Netflix and really think it should have been given more than the one season it got.

I have to chuckle at Get a Life. I love that show! I don't know how long of a shelf life it could have had, though. Sometime the the brightest stars burn the fastest. :D

HBO promised the Deadwood creators two 2 hour movies to end it but they never happened. All of the actors moved on to other projects. So it's pretty much dead. It's a shame.

The movie was called Serenity.

The show is basically a Sci-Fi Western hybrid.

The main character is an homage to Han Solo. He's a rouge pilot with a conscience who, after being part of an unsuccessful rebellion against an evil "empire" now operates a pseudo-legal smuggling/shipping operation on the outer fringes of the galaxy... which has many "frontier" motifs.

He has a crew of colorful characters, including the girl from the new Terminator series.

They get into a lot of scrapes with the government/empire as well as with other assorted outlaw types.

They're basically always just trying to make enough money to live on, and then usually, at some point, the main guy's conscience is tested and he has to decide if he's going to look out for himself or do the right thing. Like I said earlier, a lot of shades of Han Solo in him.

It's a great show though, and like Joss Whedon's other stuff, the writing and dialogue is great and there's a lot of humor in it and good storytelling.

Don't watch the movie until you're done watching the show, but all in all it's a good finale for a show that ended far too early.

Ugh don't get me started on Deadwood :(

It still makes me mad the cancelled it . Not only that but they said they were going to make a two part (2 hour each part) movie to tie up all the ends but then did not.

I remember reading an interview with Ian McShire (sp?), the one that played swearigin, and he said they told them they were going to do the movies and they never heard anything and later figured it was a no go when he found out they tore the sets down.

Firefly was the most over rated and over hyped show I have seen since the followup to Friends by the doofus.
It was pretentious and so obviously an ego trip by Joss (who did an incredible job of inventing BTVS) that I doubt it ever really had a chance to be popular. There were several parts on it that just grated on me- and apparently on most people that tried to watch it.

21 Jump Street- unfortunately, the show was overshadowed by Johnny Depp's fame and was falsely labeled as a teeny bopper show but it was really ahead of it's timeand has never been given the credit that it is due. That show approached heavy topics in a sincere manner such as HIV, homosexuality, racism, gangs, child abuse, teen pregnancy, homelessness, rape and other issues that were far too taboo during the late 80's, a time in which Hollywood was completely braindead and every character was a stereotype and plots were predictable and avoided certain subjects. Think back to some of your favorite 80's movies and they are filled with unabashed stereotypes; every Asian is a nerd or a karate guy, every Hispanic was a drug dealer, every Black guy talked jive, every fat guy farted and ate everything in sight, every Gay character had a lisp and hit on any male in sight, every blonde girl was sexually pomiscuous or a cheerleader. To think that a show broke these stereotypes and had a multicultural cast that were not token characters was groundbreaking. The sad thing is girls watched the show only for Johnny Depp's looks which led Fox to create a superficial treen drama in 90210 and that led to the creation of all these teen shows. The reality is 21 Jump street was well written and had good intentions even if it got famous for the wrong reasons. Go back and watch some of those seasons and you will be impressed at how it tried to approach these topics in a sincere manner even if it was less forceful and unrefined by todays standards.

Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo.

I read recently that they wanted to make a Rome movie and HBO said they made a mistake (you think) in canceling Rome.

But like Deadwood...the sets were destroyed and the actors had to move on.

The writers said when they were starting to write the second season that that is when they found out that they were canceled and they had to blow through history to wrap it up.

They said seasons 4 and 5 would have been in Egypt.

I could make a typical female driver joke about her, but I wont. Voyager was great premise with an awful follow through. They were supposed to be struggling in a new land, but they had a never ending supply of shuttle craft, torpedoes, resources, etc. it was the like the Next Generation reset button phenomenon x100. And they made the borg sissies.

I liked Greg the Bunny....it was a little weird but then so am I :laugh1:

when they are trying to "hip" up the show and the vampire character is trying to say "ai'ight" but keeps saying "AH-IGUT" - that was really funny.

David Milch of Deadwood fame was the writer of that show and it had quite a few of the Deadwood actors in it. I always wondered if HBO gave it to Milch to make up for the way they handled Deadwood.

It was a bad show and I didn't really care for it myself.

Holy crap....my buddies and I used to joke about that all the time at work.

AH-IGUT.........BLAH!

That was funny as hell.

Firefly has to be the biggest one I wish had made it, even though I didn't watch it when it aired.

Dead Like Me
Andy Richter Controls the Universe
and also with Andy: Quintuplets
Journeyman
Homefront

All were great shows.

A few others that I was liking before they got cancelled but still wasn't sure if they would really turn out well:

Point Pleasant
Drive

Wow... watched Deadwood a few times... I thought it was good but the language was "sharp".

I really liked:

Journeyman - cancelled
Sarah Connor Cronicles - heard it may be cancelled
Lipstick Jungle - gonna be cancelled
Fringe - seems safe for now

It could be because the show has been moved to Friday which is an ominous sign. The next show starts February 13th. I love the show but the writing could improve. They are deliberately delaying major events and the show could use more action instead of these filler side plots.

I think that jerhico was a good show but it was only on for two or three seasons.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot......Greatest American Hero.

I LOVED that show when I was a kid. It literally got me escaping into my own imagination. I used to literally pray that I'd also get my own superhero suit.

Yeah, I had a rough childhood.

That actor played a quick "Cameo" on Heroes this season. That was pretty cool. Although I'd have really liked it if they gave him a bigger role.

Jericho was another one I really liked.

Greg the Bunny was awesome...the best character was Tardy the Turtle.
