Taylor Mays. May be the best defender in college.

he's too big. he's 235 pounds already and will only get bigger in the NFL. he will probably turnout to be a linebacker in a 4-3 defense. i see flashbacks of Roy when i see him only he wasn't half the player Roy was in college.

Funny, but I was thinking the same thing. Maybe I'm wrong, but the dude is huge. I don't think he'd be able to keep up with receivers in the league.

Except he is the 2nd fastest guy on USCs roster.

Roy never cracked top 10 on Ou's.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. Scouts could look at him as a LB due to his size, but his speed suggests that he could remain at safety. His size speed ratio is more along the lines of Landry or Sean Taylor than Roy Williams.

Does Mays make enough plays though? I know everyone raves about his size/speed combo, but in the few games I watched USC this yr I dont remember seeing him do much.

Anybody have his career numbers for tackles, picks, passes defensed, tfl's ect etc

I question if he could stay that fast being that big though. acceleration is key in the secondary and that's a big kid. if he turned out like sean Taylor i'd be thrilled but i have my doubts

Only he hit's harder and he's faster.

I watched the OSU and ND games, and kinda absorbed some of the Penn State new years day game through a pounding headache and no sleep.

He wasn't the best player on the field, but he always seemed to be in on the play.

I can't recall anything spectacular off of the top of my head.

I've seen some of Mays and he doesn't strike me as the type of safety we need, we need a centerfielder a guy who will so sideline to sideline and make plays on the ball. Hamlin and Roy can hit we don't need a hitter we need a Ed Reed type of prospect..........easier said than done but that's what we need.

Stop looking at size. Watch the vid, he gets to the ball and delivers.

Find me some plays where he let those Pac 10 WR's get deep on him.

In case it hasn't been mentioned. Mays was clocked twice at 4.28. I doubt we could even come close to getting him but if Jerry somehow did, I would never allow anyone to badmouth Jerry. I'd show up at people's houses and deliver a buttwhoopin like Jay and Silent Bob did.

just thought of something, may be some language issues in this youtubevideo. Mods, please feel free to remove if there's a problem. For others, if you have issues with language, please do not click on this. Just think it's hilarious how these two find out that people are talking mess about them on the net so they go door to door and get some revenge.

At pick 51 we have a shot at Rashad Johnson and Patrick Chung both good but neither genetic anomalies. Rashad is said to be like Ed Reed in attitude and hit like a mad mule. Both are Ed Reed size and speed. More coverage than run. In a perfect world Mays is the pick but last I looked that has not happened.

I dont see Ed Reed playing alot of man coverage. He plays more like a "rover" and trolls in zones. He gets alot of picks because he does such a great job diagnosing plays and guessing on routes.

Patrick Chung out of Oregon or Michael Hamlin out of Clemson are the two I'll be pulling for . Both are late 2nd round to early 3rd round guys .

Chung lines up at SS the majority of the time , but Oregon actually lists him as a "Rover" becuase they line him up everywhere from SS to FS to LB and even CB on occasion . I wouldn't call him a ball hawk , but he does have good range and is an outstanding tackler and palymaker .

Hamlin is both ball hawk and outstanding tackler . He had 6 Ints. and 8 passes defended on the year to go along with 97 tackles , a sack , and two forced fumbles . He had an equally impressive 2007 season and has shown consisten play .

Personally I think Hamlin would be the best pick . He's probably available when the Cowboys pick early in the third , and I think he would pair perfectly with Roy Williams .

Mays is obviously a freak of nature - I don't recall him getting burned deep, but I do seem to recall him being out of position on a lot of key plays in both of the Stanford games I watched the last couple years.

Problem is that I just don't enjoy Pac-10 football enough to watch many more of their games, so I can't opine too much more than that. I came away less impressed than I expected to be, but I probably missed some of his better days.

Mays is hard to figure , because he really hasn't been impressive . He has 53 tackles , 2 tackles for loss , 0 Ints. and 0 forced fumbles on the year . His #s aren't even close to guys like W. Moore , P. Chung , M. Hamlin , or half the other safeties in the NCAA . That said , he plays on the best defense in the country where it's hard to rack up big#s because of the talent in front of him .

I don't know about that. Todd McShay gives him one of the highest trades in the draft, but something raised an immidiate red flag:

Taylor Mays S, Southern California (6-3½, 225) | Grade: 97
Biggest asset: Freakish combo of size, speed and athletic ability
Biggest concern: Questionable instincts and work ethic
Status: Likely leaving

If that's even remotely accurate, I'd still draft him, but at 6'4, 235 with a frame to gain more weight, the speed of a safety in college, to me he'd make a DEADLY outside LB for the 3-4.

Remember that Brian Urlacher was also a former safety.

DeMarcus Ware on one side and he on the other at 245-255 lbs rotating with Spencer ?

If Justin Woodall from Alabama declares, he'd be a perfect fit and we'd have an excellent chance at him either with out second or our early third round draft pick.

More people should look into this guy. He played CB his freshman year and was a freshman all-american, and since moving to safety has been a complete ballhawk. Good size on him too. I really hope he can establish himself as an NFL starter. It would be a cool story to tell my friends that a guy who lived down the hall from me in the dorms is now making NFL millions. Currently, the nearest to NFL fame I have is that Greg Jennings was supposed to be in one of my classes, but instead was training for the combine.

I like a lot of the guys in this years class of FS/SSs. Mays is a freak, who can definetly stay at the position. I just wonder if he wouldn't be better off moving. That speed at LB would be a game changer. Look at Urlacher, or Davis in CAR. He'd be able to cover any HB, TE, and a lot of WRs, plus should be good in run support. Would take a while for him to learn the position, but speed makes up for a lot of mistakes.
