Obama gives chilly reception to canceled school
By BEN FELLER, Associated Press Writer Ben Feller, Associated Press Writer Wed Jan 28, 11:31 am ET
WASHINGTON – You call this bad weather? President Barack Obama, steeled by many snowy Chicago winters, expressed disbelief Wednesday when his daughters woke up to find that their classes had been canceled for the day.
Schools in Washington and the surrounding suburbs either opened late or scrapped all their classes because of icy conditions.
"Can I make a comment that is unrelated to the economy very quickly?" the new president told reporters at a gathering with business leaders. "And it has to do with Washington. My children's school was canceled today. Because of, what? Some ice?"
The president said he wasn't the only one who was incredulous.
"As my children pointed out, in Chicago, school is never canceled," Obama said to laughter. "In fact, my 7-year-old pointed out that you'd go outside for recess. You wouldn't even stay indoors. So, I don't know. We're going to have to try to apply some flinty Chicago toughness."
Asked if he meant the people of the national's capital are wimps, Obama said: "I'm saying, when it comes to the weather, folks in Washington don't seem to be able to handle things."
Obama's daughters attend the private Sidwell Friends School.
Malia, 10, is a fifth-grader at the middle school campus in the District of Columbia, while younger sister Sasha is in second grade at the elementary school in Bethesda, Md., just outside Washington.

I just find it funny cause I remember growing up in Austin, any little bit of ice got everything shut down but in New York, I can count the number of snow days I had in high school and college on one hand.

I wonder why the Obama family does not take advantage of our wonderful government mandated education system? It's good enough for my children but not his?

Yeah, it is funny. It's all in the perspective...and also the snow and ice preparation budgets of each city. I've mainly lived in Texas, North Carolina, and Ohio. In Ohio, they had the salt, sand, and snow plows out all night when the weather got bad---which seemed like every week in the winter. In NC and Texas, not so much so.

I wonder why the Obama family does not take advantage of our wonderful government mandated education system? It's good enough for my children but not his?I think if one can afford private school and they would like that for their children, I don't have a problem with it. Obviously for security reasons, the Obama children have to go to a private school.
As for the weather, I agree with him. My little sister is in high school and she gets up everyday and goes to school even in below zero temperatures. She just layers up and go.
Houston will shut down the city for almost anything. Granted, I like staying at home, but it's ridiculous how often they'll shut down due to weather concerns.

I have not been able to go to work this week due to the snow/ice on my road. Course having a crappy old camaro is not exactly conducive to traveling in this type of weather but it is all I have right now.
However I remember in high school we would go to school all the time unless there was a really bad winter storm, meanwhile the county across the river from us, that you could see from town...would have school called off if just a little bit of snow flew. Funny who that stuff worked. As a Kid I wanted to live in that county in Ohio just to get a few extra days off.

In Texas 99% of the time it is a waste of Tax Payers money snow plows would rot in Texas and typically when we shut schools down it is not snow but ice and sleet which means a snow plow is still useless
They use sand but basically most people do not know how to drive in the snow either
So it would be wasted Tax Dollars in anything besides parts of the Pan Handle in Texas
It is pretty funny; this place is a ghost town today. I came from 70 miles away and the people who live 20 minutes away haven't shown up.

This is nothing new... the entire DC area completely freaks out when the weather gets the slightest bit nasty.
They are completely and consistently incapable of dealing with snowy or icy weather.
One of the reasons, I think, is that there are a lot of "transplants" here -- people who didn't grow up in the area. And I get the hunch that a lot of them are from areas (and countries) where they didn't grow up used to bad weather at all. And they just frankly don't know how to drive in the snow (for that matter, those around here don't seem to know how to drive in the rain).
That said, this is the first snow we've had all winter, and people always tend to freak out more when it's the first snow of the year. Also, a lot of school districts build in snow days and it's kind of a use them or lose them sort of proposition, so they may be anxious to use a few before winter is over.
But yes, I have no doubt that DC is much worse at handling snowy weather than Illinois is. I'm kinda surprised Obama is just figuring this out since he has been in DC for a few years now.

LOL. Spoken like a true Hawaiian. Well, I've been out there today and I can assure you that it's pretty nasty--and not just for the skittish DC region, either. Obama's kids will never have any trouble getting to school (rain or shine) because they have the best vehicles and best drivers at their disposal. Regular folks/parents don't have that luxury. An unplowed inch or two of snow on the ground means a lot of accidents in areas unused to this kind of weather, and an ice storm would close schools not just here but in Chicago as well. Yes, there's a lot of weather wimps in the DC area, but today's not the day to slam them.

In my part of the world, the lake freezes up in late November and dosn't completely come ice-free until May. We've had stints of quite cold weather for a while now (-35) and we have snow on the roads on a weekly basis. There are still people here who are struggling to drive in slippery conditions. Some folks never learn.

Well, look at it this way. Would you want the daughters of a sitting US President in a public school? They'd have to literally turn that place into a prison. At least a private school is already halfway there.

In El Paso when I was growing up, two inches of snow could completely paralyze the city... back then, they didn't have all weather tires, and of course NOBODY put snow tires on their cars...
And the only reason they had plows was for sandstorms... I kid you not... :D
We lived directly across the street from the elementary school I attended (Terrace Hills Elementary, on Tropicana Avenue), they built it shortly after we moved in... so naturally, I really thought I was getting away with something, not having to go to school when I was literally a 30 second walk from my homeroom...

The main roads were just fine this morning out here in the Shenandoah Valley... I didn't even put my Jeep in 4WD for the trip down I-81... but the back road to my house, that was a bit of an adventure...
And of course, lots of kids in Shenandoah County live on such back roads, so I understand why they called school off (the first time this year), though as things worked out, a 2 hour delay would have worked just fine... it got up to 46 today...

From the New York Times' puff piece today: “WASHINGTON — The capital flew into a bit of a tizzy when, on his first full day in the White House, President Obama was photographed in the Oval Office without his suit jacket. There was, however, a logical explanation: Mr. Obama, who hates the cold, had cranked up the thermostat.”
Cranked up the thermostat, eh?
Let’s get into the Wayback Machine for June 6, 2008: “We can’t drive our SUVs and, you know, eat as much as we want and keep our homes on, you know, 72 degrees at all times, whether we’re living in the desert or we’re living in the tundra, and then just expect every other country is going to say OK, you know, you guys go ahead keep on using 25 percent of the world’s energy, even though you only account for 3 percent of the population, and we’ll be fine. Don’t worry about us. That’s not leadership.”
Hope. Change. Crank up the thermostat.
At the time I was in HS, and this was years ago, the rumor went that the would take a school bus with chains down a back road and if it made it...we had school. Now of course that was probably just a rumor but if it were true it would not have shocked me.
