D'oh! Caterpillar CEO Contradicts President on Whether Stimulus Will Allow Him to Re-Hire Laid Off Workers
February 12, 2009 6:16 PM
EAST PEORIA, ILL. -- President Obama today repeated the claim we asked about yesterday at the press briefing (http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2009/02/todays-q-for--2.html)that Jim Owens, the CEO of Caterpillar, Inc., "said that if Congress passes our plan, this company will be able to rehire some of the folks who were just laid off."
Caterpillar announced 22,000 layoffs last month.

The CEO said there will be more layoffs coming so much for that

correct.......so much for Obama statement of them rehirieing due to his Porkulus bill.....
We-ell, he does say that it won't have an immediate impact and there will be more lay-offs, before the stimulus can make enough of a difference to rehire. He's also a supporter of the stimulus.

I know this plant. It is located between Peoria and Canton on 24, just outside of Glasford. My uncle actually retired from that plant some years ago and I still have cousins who work there. In a nut shell, they used to build engines for Trucks and all sorts of different things there. About two years ago, they made a business decision to streamline that plant. Now, they will only build earthmovers that are primarily being sold to China. The Chinese love them. Basically, the engines they were building were too expensive and had significant issues with emissions so they just decided to cut it out and go another direction. These layoffs have been coming for several years now as a part of Cats business strategy.
This whole thing was a shame but hey, lets not let facts get in the way of a good photo op.
