Why did he make up a story about the CEO of Caterpillar? Why lie? Obama claims Caterpillar said they would rehire the recently fired workers only if Obama got his spending bill through.
Well, big surprise, Obama was lying again. The CEO says Caterpillar will continue to lay off workers.

He didn't lie. The CEO of Caterpillar just said that it would take some time for the stimulus bill to impact his industry and that, until that time, there would most likely be more layoffs before that happened. The passage of the bill will just help the company rehire people more quickly.

Obama specifically said Caterpillar would hire back workers if the stimulus/welfare bill was passed. Obama was singing this all day long Friday to build support for the bill. The CEO of Caterpillar says that is not true.
So Obama says its true and the CEO says it is not. Was it necessary to use false propaganda? Didn't Obama already have the votes? Why fabricate a story? Why lie when he already had the votes.
Words do matter... to a few I guess.

Why did Obama lie?Did he say that specific thing? I haven't heard this story, but if he specifically said that Caterpillar would hire the recently laid off workers back, that is much different than saying that there wouldn't be any new hires until a stimulus bill goes through.

Caterpillar to hire if stimulus passes: Obama
SPRINGFIELD, Va. — President Barack Obama, campaigning to cast his economic plan in terms of real jobs and families, said Wednesday that machinery giant Caterpillar Inc. plans to rehire some of its laid-off workers if Congress approves a sweeping stimulus bill.
Obama’s mention of Caterpillar also came just one day before he was heading to Peoria, Ill., to visit the company’s workers and keep pushing his plan. The heavy-equipment maker has announced more than 20,000 job cuts, as shrinking credit and construction demands hurt orders for tractors and other machines.
Said Obama: “Today, the chairman and CEO of Caterpillar said that if the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan passes, his company would be able to rehire some of those employees.”

CEO Contradicts Obama on Rehiring Employees

At a Caterpillar Inc. plant in Peoria, Ill., today, President Obama said that his proposed economic stimulus would allow the company's CEO to rehire recently laid-off employees. But the head of the company said he will have to fire more workers (http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory?id=6858553)before he can rehire anyone who has been let go

And now Obama

Sad, isn't it. Obama had no reason to say those things about Caterpillar. It wasn't needed to pass his welfare bill. It was completely unnecessary. I'm just not a big fan of propaganda.

He did say that Caterpillar would be able to rehire workers, but he didn't say that Caterpillar would be able to rehire them right away. That's what the CEO said in his interview too.
Obama: "Today, the chairman and CEO of Caterpillar said that if the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan passes, his company would be able to rehire some of those employees."
Owens: "I think, realistically, no. The honest reality is we're probably going to have more layoffs before we start hiring again... As these projects kick in, one concern I have that we need to be mindful of, is that even if this stimulus package passes, not only here but around the world, it still takes a little time to bid the contracts and get the dirt work started."
So, Owens isn't saying that the stimulus bill won't help them rehire workers, he's just saying that it will take some time.

I'm just not a big fan of propaganda.Me either, nor the fact that it then gets spun as fact and defended way beyond a reasonable argument. What is just as scary is when you question the veracity, and you are demonized. I think, and I can accept if I can be shown that I am wrong, but I think that the biggest single difference between the Republicans and the Democrats in terms of lying, is that to point out a Republican lie is to be heralded and treated as a news star, but to even question that a Democrat might be lying, you are often vilified both in the press and in discussions as a hater.
Why did Obama lie?
It's what he does. Didn't you follow his campaign?

To add fuel to the fire, Caterpillar Employees asked Shock not to vote for the spending bill.
