I do this every year, this time around I'm getting a little earlier start on it... I plan on listing all the players that the Cowboys have shown some interest in during the scouting process... this year, I also intend to mention where I heard about this interest...

Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU... 6-4, 295 pounds... 4.85 second 40... NFL Draft Scout lists him as their 26th best player overall, so he might be an unrealistic target for the Boys, but of course he's got the raw computer numbers that just scream 3-4 DE... I learned about their interest in a post by Matt Mosley to the ESPN website on Feb. 18th... NFLDS compares him to Shaun Ellis...

Sean Smith, CB/S, Utah... 6-3, 210 pounds... 4.45 second 40... NFLDS has him as their 37th rated overall player, which means he'd have to fall for the Boys to have a shot at him, or they'd have to trade up... to be honest, I don't see either happening... that's too bad, he's a favorite of a lot of folks in here, including your friendly local Bear... if he was to fall to 51, and I was picking for the Boys, he'd certainly be on my radar... KFFL reported the Boys met with Sean on Saturday... NFLDS compares him to Julian Battle...

Derrick Williams, WR/KR, Penn State... 5-11, 195 pounds... 4.4 second 40... NFLDS rates him their 46th best player overall, which means he might not even fall to the Boys' first pick, at 51... but he might slip to them, if things broke right... KFFL reported the Boys met with Williams on Saturday... NFLDS compares him to Devery Henderson... he's a nice receiver, and a nice kick returner, but somehow I don't see the Boys going WR at pick 51...

Ron Brace, DT, Boston College... 6-3, 325 pounds... 5.25 second 40... NFLDS has him as their 53 best player overall, and the Boys pick 51st... I learned about their interest in an interview he conducted with a Chargers website name of Bolts Hype... he said the Boys had talked with him, apparently at the Senior Bowl... NFLDS compares Brace to Domata Peko... I'd really like to see him in a Cowboys uniform...

Jarron Gilbert, DE, San Jose State... 6-5, 286 pounds... 4.95 second 40... NFLDS rates him as their 59th best player, and given the relative scarcity of 3-4 DEs in this draft, the Boys would probably have to use pick 51 to draft him... KFFL reported the Boys met with him on Saturday... NFLDS compares him to Jason Hatcher, though he's slightly smaller... I could live with this pick, especially after hearing the comparison to Hatcher... if the Boys really, really want a DE out of this draft, he's a more realistic option than Tyson Jackson, IMO...

Juaquin Iglesias, WR, Oklahoma... 6-1, 205 pounds... 4.45 second 40... NFLDS lists him as their 60th rated player, meaning he'd be a target for their 2nd round pick... I learned about their interest in him just today on Rafael Vela's Blogging The Boys website... NFLDS compares him to Keary Colbert... again, I wonder if the Boys look at a WR this early, but that doesn't mean he hasn't got game...

Phil Loadholt, OT, Oklahoma... 6-8, 340 pounds... 5.3 second 40... NFLDS lists him as their 62nd ranked player, so like Iglesias he'd be a 2nd round target (unless he slides a few slots, the Boys draft at pick 69 in the 3rd round)... I learned about the Boys interest in Phil on the KFFL website... NFLDS compares him to Max Starks, a comparison that really piqued my interest... what doesn't is my good buddy Zaxor telling me he looked kinda stiff at his combine workout...

Derry Beckwith, ILB/OLB, LSU... 6-1, 245 pounds... 4.55 second 40... NFLDS rates him their 85th best player overall, so if the Boys want him, they'd have to grab him with their 3rd round; it's highly unlikely that he'd fall to pick 97 (rating him 85 is probably underrating him in the first place)... KFFL reported the Boys met with him on Saturday... NFLDS compares him to Kirk Morrison, other websites have mentioned that he's probably the best cover linebacker in this draft... this suggests to me that he might be a fine replacement for the oft-injured Kevin Burnett...

Cody Brown, OLB/DE, Connecticut... 6-2, 245 pounds... 4.65 second 40... NFLDS has him as their 87th ranked player, or a likely 3rd round pick if the Boys want to add him... I learned about their interest in Cody in an interview he gave to a Hartford newspaper, again right after the Senior Bowl... NFLDS compares him to Bruce Davis... I don't know that there's a need for another passrusher this early, but I like Cody's game...

Nate Davis, QB, Ball State... 6-2, 225 pounds... 4.75 second 40... NFLDS rates him 4 picks behind Brown, which again means a 3rd round pick for the Boys, unless he slips just a little (the Boys also have the first pick in the 4th round, 97 overall)... I just learned about their interest in Nate today, on Vela's Blogging The Boys website... NFLDS compares him to Quincy Carter (which should cause some in here to retch)... I think that the Boys might look to draft a QB in the middle rounds, so he's a serious prospect...

Rhett Bomar, QB, Sam Houston State... 6-2, 225 pounds... 4.7 second 40... NFLDS has him rated their 104th best player overall, so the Boys would have to grab him with their first 4th round pick... the Boys talked to him at the Senior Bowl... NFLDS compares him to JP Losman... again, this would be the range that the Boys might look for a QB...

Jarett Dillard, WR, Rice... 5-10, 186 pounds... 4.5 second 40... NFLDS lists him as their 114th best player overall, and the Boys pick at 97 and 113 in the 4th round... I like Dillard well enough that I'd reach for him at pick 97 ( the guy set an NCAA record with 60 TD receptions, 'nuff said)... KFFL reported the team met with Dillard on Saturday... NFLDS compares him to Bobby Wade...

Zack Follett, OLB, California... 6-2, 235 pounds... 4.65 second 40... NFLDS rates him their 128th best player overall, so the Boys would have to use their second 4th rounder to claim him... KFFL reported the Boy met with Zack on Saturday... NFLDS compares him to Jordan Beck... I'm kind of on the fence with Zack, he has skills the Boys could use, but I think I'd rather they look at other positions in the 4th round...

Jaimie Thomas, OG, Maryland... 6-4, 330 pounds... 5.25 second 40... NFLDS has him as their 143rd ranked player overall, which means the Boys would have to grab him with their second 4th round pick, or gamble that he falls a little, to their first 5th round pick, number 148 overall... he's definitely a Hudson Houck type blocker, but it bothers me that he can only play guard...

Cornelius Lewis, OT/OG, Tennessee State... 6-4, 325 pounds... 5.2 second 40... NFLDS rates him the 166th best player in the draft, which means the Boys would have to snag him with one of their two 5th round picks if they really want him... if their rankings are anywhere close to how the draft plays out (admittedly, a big "if"), then the second 5th rounder ought to get the job done... I learned about the Boys' interest in Lewis in an interview he gave to a Nashville area newspaper... NFLDS compares him to Frank Omiyale... if the Boys go OL in the middle rounds, this is a guy who makes sense (and they should certainly be thinking about adding one or two offensive linemen in this draft)...

Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech... 602, 216 pounds... 4.85 second 40... NFLDS rates him their 183rd best player overall, which makes him a 5th or 6th round target... I'd project him as the Boys' supplemental pick in the 5th, if they really like him (I don't care for his lack of arm strength)... the Boys talked to him at the Senior Bowl... NFLDS compares him to Jake Delhomme (I don't see it)...

John Phillips, TE, Virginia... 6-6, 250 pounds... 4.75 second 40... NFLDS rates him their 209th best player overall, so the Boys would probably have to grab him with their anticipated supplemental pick in the 6th round... I thank Bob Sacamano for letting me know about their interest in Phillips... NFLDS compares him to Ben Utecht... I don't see a glaring need for a TE at any point in this draft, but I'm a big fan of the University of Virginia and would enjoy having one of their players on the roster...

Demetrius Byrd, WR, LSU... 6-1, 200 pounds... 4.45 second 40... NFLDS rates him their 227th best player overall, meaning the Boys could probably snap him up in the 7th round... I learned about their interest in Byrd on Vela's Blogging The Boys website... NFLDS compares him to Courtney Taylor... I think that NFLDS severely underrates Byrd, I believe he'll go in the 3rd or 4th round range, based on other websites' projections...

Rudy Carpenter, QB, Arizona State... 6-2, 225 pounds... 4.85 second 40... NFLDS rates him the 312th player on their board, meaning a 7th rounder at best, more likely an undrafted rookie free agent... again, Vela's Blogging The Boys website is my source here... NFLDS does not compare him to any NFL player, I guess they stop such comparisons after the top 250-300 prospects on their board, LOL... I don't think that Carpenter has NFL ability, to be blunt...

Chase Holbrook, QB, New Mexico State... 6-5, 245 pounds... 5.05 second 40... NFLDS rates him their 522nd best player overall, meaning he's a good bet to go undrafted... the only source I have for the Boys' interest in Chase is Hostile, but I trust him without question (and I hope he's right, LOL)... NFLDS does not compare him to anybody... I'd certainly favor the Boys bringing him in after the draft, to compete for a job...

And now the list is up to 20 players long... working from that list, the Boys would have the following prospects to choose from at their assorted picks (with my preference in bold font):

Pick 51-- Tyson Jackson and Sean Smith, if they fall (they probably won't)... more realistic possibilities would be Derrick Williams, Ron Brace, Jarron Gilbert, Juaquin Iglesias and Phil Loadholt...

Pick 69-- if any of the above group fell to 69, they'd have to be considered (which will also be true for each succeeding pick)... other options would be Derry Beckwith, Cody Brown and Nate Davis...

Pick 97/Pick 113-- choose 2 from Rhett Bomar, Jarett Dillard, Zack Follett, and Jaimie Thomas...

Pick 148-- Thomas or Cornelius Lewis... if the Boys haven't grabbed an offensive lineman (or two) at this point, it's almost imperative that they start looking at adding some in the late rounds...

6th round on-- the info starts getting sketchier in the later rounds, the Boys have mostly talked to early and mid-round prospect at this point... but they seem to like John Phillips...

And now, the list is 20 players long, with more certainly to come... at this point, I'm surprised at how few offensive linemen they've shown an interest in, and how many WRs... I'm not surprised that they're looking at LBs and DLs, or QBs...

So, how would y'all feel about this draft??

2) Ron Brace, NT, Boston College... the run stuffer that a 3-4 defense needs...

3) Derry Beckwith, ILB, LSU... the cover ILB the Cowboys will need if Kevin Burnett leaves the team...

4a) Rhett Bomar, QB, Sam Houston State... a QB to groom for the future...

4b) Jarett Dillard, WR, Rice... a nice slot receiver, a proven playmaker...

5a) Cornelius Lewis, OT/OG, Tennessee State... quality depth for the OL...

I hadn't heard about that, thanks for the input... Phillips currently grades as a 6th or 7th rounder, I'd have no problems with the Boys claiming him in the late rounds, even if they don't really have much of a need at the position...

I've edited my list to include Phillips...

Now that you mention it, I do recall reading that the Boys had shown an interest in Bomar, and in Graham Harrell, at the Senior Bowl... as for the others on your list, some of them ring a bell, but as is the case with Bomar and Harrell, I just can't remember where I read about their interest...

Cowboys visit with Rice receiver
By Tom Orsborn on Feb 21, 2009 6:08 PM | Permalink | Comments (0)

Rice wide receiver Jarett Dillard is among the players who have been interviewed by the Cowboys at the NFL Scouting Combine.

I talked with Dillard's mother, Robin, on Friday night at the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Jarett and his QB at Rice, Chase Clement, were co-winners of the Express-News' 2008 Sportsman of the Year Award.

Robin Dillard said her son called earlier in the day from Indianapolis to say the Cowboys had interviewed him.

Dillard, a Sam Houston High School alumnus, caught 87 passes last season for 1,310 yards and a nation-best 20 TD receptions, giving him an NCAA-record 60 scores for his career.

With Terrell Owens now 35, it wouldn't hurt the Cowboys to get younger at receiver. Dillard is a sharp, high-character guy who would be a good fit for a team in need of sharp, high-character guys.

I learned about their interest in him just today on Rafael Vela's Blogging The Boys website... NFLDS compares him to Keary Colbert... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qGtpemtA08

NFLDS compares him to Max Starks, a comparison that really piqued my interest... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyTOOKEOIFo

NFLDS compares him to Bruce Davis... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YK9F-LvGMi4

Nate Davis, QB, Ball State... 6-2, 225 pounds... 4.75 second 40... I just learned about their interest in Nate today, on Vela's Blogging The Boys website... I thank Bob Sacamano for letting me know about their interest in Phillips... NFLDS compares him to Ben Utecht...

NFLDS compares him to Courtney Taylor... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaREzhxkpU0&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bA3Xa-wICdc&feature=related

Rudy Carpenter, QB, Arizona State... 6-2, 225 pounds... 4.85 second 40... Nice job, HoL... I'm currently working on ranking the players according to their average ranking on assorted draft websites... the problem is, most of those websites only give the top 100 or 150 players... NFL Draft Scout goes 750 deep, if you can believe that, but it would be helpful if more boards went a little deeper in their rankings...

Ah well, hopefully I'll be able to rank the players I like in the top 100-150 according to some kind of consensus of all the boards... I'll tell you what, though, an exercise like this sure drives home how different assorted boards' rankings are...

Well, all RIGHT... there's a boy who was born to play the slot receiver in the NFL...

He is really all over the board.

Much like many other players... I have to constantly remind myself that the draft is an art, not a science... it frustrates me a little that there isn't more of a consensus on the players once you get past the top 10-20...

Of course, it's that way every year... one man's trash is another man's treasure...

I added a few youtube links. I hope others do the same as they find them, or as names are added to this list.

I appreciate it, this will give me something to do on my days off...

Thanks man

I used to love doing things like like your planning but I lost my copy of MS Office when I moved and when I got the new computer I was out of luck. I need to pony up the money for a new copy but times are tight right now.

If you need any help let me know. To be honest with you, there is probably not a draft web site that requires a subscription that I can't get the info from.

OK, since I can't go back and edit my original post, I'm copying it here, and I'm going to insert the players we've added to the list today... I'm also inserting a little editorializing, my brief opinion on each player:

Darry Beckwith reminds me so much of Burnett when he was at Tennessee. Both excel in coverage but struggle at point of attack. Beckwith is not starting material in a 3-4 ILB position. The only way I would want Beckwith is if we got Scott or Lewis and have him play 3rd and long like Burnett.

More Cowboys Players of Interest

by Rafael Vela on Feb 21, 2009 6:00 PM CST 66 comments

More that Makes Me Go Hmmmmm...

Dallas has spoken to Penn. State WR Derrick Williams and to Oklahoma WR Juaquin Iglesias the last couple of days. It's probably just due diligence -- you have the staff in Indy, so you need to do your homework and talk to all the prospects you like -- but I find it just a bit odd that Dallas is filling dossiers on two WRs rated in the 2nd round.

They Like You Zack, I Think They Do

The Cowboys are also looking at ILBs, including LSU's Darry Beckwith, an option in the early 3rd and Cal's Zach Follett, a mid-round prospect. Beckwith has also drawn interest from the Patriots, 49ers, Chargers and Seahawks. The first three run 34s like Dallas, so they must all feel that Beckwith, who lists at 232 lbs., can fill out and play inside.

There appears less consensus on Follett. He's been interviewed by Dallas, Green Bay, San Diego, Baltimore, Oakland, Cleveland and Cincinnati. Every one of these teams save the Bengals, run a 34. Follett is quoted at kffl.com that some teams told him he' too small to play their 34. Follett, who weighs 238 lbs., may indeed be too small to play outside in the scheme, but I wonder if he's being projected inside? I read reports during Senior Bowl week that Dallas watched Follett at Mobile. I doubt they're one of the teams telling Follett he's too small.

-- Add San Jose State DE prospect Jarron Gilbert to the players of interest list.

-- The Cowboys have also interviewed Maryland OG Jaimie Thomas, who currently projects into the later rounds.

OSU lineman Andy Levitre

The one test that got on my nerves a little was the test given by the New York Giants which consisted of 260, yes that is TWO HUNDRED AND SIXTY questions plus another packet of 70 short answer questions after you finished that.

When I finished this I had the chance to speak with the offensive line coaches from both the Chicago Bears and the Dallas Cowboys for a little bit and talk about some football and draw up some more plays and explain the rules of the plays.

Griffons' Allen enjoys NFL audition
by R.J. Cooper
Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Roger Allen joined an elite group just by receiving an invitation to the NFL’s 2009 Combine and then stood alone when the Missouri Western guard didn’t participate in drills last weekend.

Allen was one of seven Division II players invited to Indianapolis and the only one who didn’t perform for the NFL’s coaches, general managers and scouts. The 6-foot-3 senior suffered a sports hernia in the Texas vs. the Nation all-star game Feb. 2, forcing Allen to undergo surgery Feb. 11 and sidelining him for six to eight weeks.

“It was only disappointed in the fact that I was really looking forward to participating in the combine and have all of my friends and family see me on the NFL Network,” Allen said Monday. “But besides that, I’m not really worried about it. I try not to worry about things I can’t control.”

Allen hopes to be ready for Missouri’s pro day in Columbia on March 19 and Missouri Western’s on April 2. In the meantime, Allen still made the trip to Indianapolis and interviewed with just about every NFL team. The Carolina Panthers and Dallas Cowboys went a step further, inviting Allen to their suites for in-depth interviews with each team’s head coach, offensive-line coach, GM and scouts.

“(Carolina) coach Jeff Fox is a really nice guy. He is extremely personable and easygoing,” Allen said. “(The Cowboys) seem real professional and very easygoing. From what I got to know, they are all nice guys. I would like to play for any of them.”

Allen said his agents are hearing from teams that he could go anywhere between the fourth and sixth rounds of April’s draft. Allen, though, is taking a worst-case approach to the situation, expecting to be signed as a free agent after the draft. But Allen likely will determine his status at one of those pro days.

Allen, who at 326 pounds is one of the heavier O-linemen invited to the combine, ran a 5.3 40-yard dash last season and thinks he could’ve run it around 5.2 before the injury. Allen is aiming for a 5.1 next month, though a 5.2 still would’ve put him in the top 10 among O-linemen at the combine.

The Raytown, Mo., native feels especially confident about the 225-pound bench press. Allen believes he can do 33 reps with a goal of 35. Thirty-three would’ve tied him for fourth at the combine.

“That was the hardest thing to deal with is watching everybody go and know I could hang with every single one of them, especially in the bench press,” said Allen, who thinks he rates in the upper-half of guard prospects in each of the six combine drills. “I knew I could be in the top five. That was a hard pill to swallow. I just had to bide my time.

“I will try to get to 100 percent and blow every one away at the two pro days.”

Does anyone know if the Cowboys have talked to any S or CB besides Sean Smith? I find tht odd that he's the only one..but I'm not complaining either.. According to New Era Scouting these are all the players the Cowboys talk with at the Senior Bowl:

Clint Sintim, OLB, Virginia
John Phillips, TE, Virginia
Rashad Johnson, FS, Alabama

Rashad Johnson
Darry Beckwith
Ricky Jean-Francois
Phil Loadholt
Demetrius Byrd

There are four players rated in the first four rounds that compare to Jay Ratliff. They are one gap penetrators and slashers, and they could be used in multiple d-line positions.

1. Peria Jerry
2. Evander Hood
3. Sen'Derrick Marks
4. Ricky Jean-Francois

Hood will be gone. I would wait for the fourth round and snag Jean-Francois. He would have a lot of value right there. I would take him with the first 4th rounder, so the Chargers don't take him.

He's shooting up the charts right now... three weeks ago, most folks graded him as a likely undrafted rookie free agent, now I've seen him going as high as the 5th round...

But he's a 3-4 DE, the Boys really need a true NT...

Oh, I understand the need for DE is much less right now but he's one of those guys (as long as he does not move up much further) you like to see your team take a flyer on. I doubt he would survive on the practice squad so if he had anything you would need to find room on the roster but I think he has a load of untapped potential. Much like Hatcher but with a later pick much less of a risk.

So, there's 34 players that I've learned the Cowboys have demonstrated some level of interest in... I'm sure there are others, we just haven't learned about them... FWIW, the 9 players in blue fonts are some of my "pet cats" in this draft... I'd be quite happy if the Boys were able to land William Moore or Sean Smith in the 2nd, trade the 3rd and the second 4th rounder to move up to get Darry Beckwith, use the remaining 4th rounder on Jarett Dillard, then both 5ths on Cornelius Lewis and Jason Williams (or Jason Phillips)... I'd consider that a very good draft, no matter what we did in the late rounds (I'd expect a QB would be added then)...

You think that CB is our biggest need?

We have one pro-bowl talent. We have last year's first rounder that, while having had an up and down year last year, has shown flashes of being a very capable starter. Scandrick, whom half of Cowboy fandom is absolutely in love with, and was a good player last year. Ball, whom most of our scouts have said has all of the tools to be a starter in the league....

I don't think CB is our most pressing need whatsoever.

Having said that, CB is a position you look at EVERY year, regardless if your roster is deep there.

I like Freeman too, but not that much more than Phillips or even Williams. Freeman will need to be taken higher than both those guys (Phillips, injury & Williams, small school). Not a value pick.

Could wait until the 4th, maybe even the 5th, and still get a comparable/maybe better player.

Q&A: Dan Skuta, LB, Grand Valley State
Written by Josh Buchanan
Thursday, 12 March 2009 11:12
NFL Draft Bible Q&A with NFL Draft Prospect linebacker Dan Skuta of Grand Valley State.

What are your current height, weight and workout numbers?

Skuta: Not sure about all of the numbers but I was 6’2 1/2, 249 pounds, which I think is off because I was 256 the day before. My vertical is 35 inches, broad jump is 9’9, and I did 20 reps on the bench. I think they had me down for a 4.64 in the 40 or somewhere around there. I am not sure on the short shuttle but the 3-cone was like a 7.03.

Talk about your pro day and team interest you received.

Skuta: It was exciting. I trained for seven or eight weeks for that one day. It was exciting to show what I got. It was nice to pull through with the numbers that I thought I would have. I think I had the longest day out of anybody because I had the normal workout stuff and an extended linebacker workout with the linebacker coach for Cincinnati. I long snapped for a while, which a lot of teams didn’t know I can do. They were impressed with that. I did some fullback drills by catching passes and running routes. One team has told me a few times that they were interested in seeing me at fullback and that is Green Bay.

Are you going to work out at any other pro days?

Skuta: I plan to go to Michigan State. I am not sure if I am in yet but I am working on that right now.

Where have you been training for your pro days?

Skuta: I stayed with my parents in Flint and this guy who played with the Bills and Patriots worked out with me in Saginaw on my strength training. He played linebacker so we did a lot of those drills. I was with a guy from Toledo who is a track guy who taught me how to run and worked on my quickness.

Did you feel snubbed by not having a combine invite?

Skuta: I felt I should have been in it for sure. A lot of scouts at the Cactus Bowl said I should be there but I couldn’t do anything about that. Everyone seems to think I should have been there and I agree, but that is how it goes sometimes coming from a small school so that is alright.

What is the highlight of your career?

Skuta: I can’t go without saying those two national championships. The sack when I passed Michael McFadden for our all-time sack total was special to me because I was passing the guy who taught me a lot about playing defensive line.

Who is the best player you have faced in your career?

Skuta: Xavier Omon ripped through us a couple times. I think Jake Visser was pretty good but I think Omon was the best I have seen.

Who is returning on your team that you think has NFL potential?

Skuta: Our quarterback has pinpoint accuracy but he is not a real big guy. He needs to get bigger but he has the accuracy. We got Blake Smolen who is a receiver and is quick. He runs well and catches well. He would be somebody that would get a look. I would maybe say Jake McGuckin on defense because of his nose for the ball. Nick McDonald has always been solid and NFL coaches are looking for someone who has a nasty streak and I think he has the attitude to play.

Who is the best player on your team?

Skuta: Probably Danny Richard.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Skuta: I am an outdoors man. We've got a cabin at the lake so my dad and I go fishing and all of that other stuff.

What is your favorite video game?

Skuta: I played a lot of Halo for a while and Call of Duty.

What is your favorite movie?

Skuta: Transformers or Gladiator.

What music is in your iPod right now?

Skuta: Probably Jamie Foxx, that new song Blame It.

What positions do teams want you to play?

Skuta: Defensive end, defensive tackle, linebacker, and fullback. Mostly that Sam Linebacker spot is what teams are looking at me for. I haven’t really been told defensive end much. I think it is more linebacker right now for me.

Which teams have shown the most interest?

Skuta: The Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys like me. At the Cactus Bowl it seemed like Miami and Baltimore liked me a bit.

What are your future goals?

Skuta: Hopefully I have a long career in the NFL and do good things with my money. I want to maybe open a business and I want to coach football as soon as I can when I am done playing.

Marcus Freeman's draft stock going up
How high in the draft do you think Marcus Freeman will go?
By Carlos "Big C" Holmes

Staff Writer

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

Ohio State outside linebacker and Wayne graduate Marcus Freeman has performed as of late as if he is trying to persuade the Detroit Lions to select him with the first overall pick in April's draft.

Although being selected with the No. 1 pick seems highly unlikely for the former Buckeye, Freeman is proving that he belongs among the elite linebackers entering the draft. He has performed brilliantly in each of his last three showings, starting with the Senior Bowl, NFL draft combine and Pro Day.

Friday March 13, was no bad omen for Freeman as he blew NFL teams away with his performance at the school's pro day. He ran a 4.5-second 40-yard dash; posted a 4.06 short-shuttle and ran a 6.60 in the 3-cone drill. Freeman had the fastest time among linebackers at the combine in the short-shuttle with a 4.12 and beat that time at the school workout. If that wasn't enough, his performance during position drills was near-perfect.

"People talked about how well I did at the combine, but for me I knew those weren't my best times," Freeman said Sunday. "I wanted to go into the pro day and make sure that I did my best. I was very pleased with my performance after the workout was over."

The linebacker left a lasting impression on the coaches in attendance, improving on all his numbers from the combine.

Freeman said the combine can be a bit overwhelming; he was more relaxed going through the drills at Ohio State and it showed.

How does he stack up?

"In my heart I feel that I can compete with anyone," Freeman said. "After April 26, it doesn't matter where you are drafted. Everybody makes this big hoorah about where you're going to go in the draft, but after April 26 you're all in the NFL. It's about what you do after that. And for me, I think I can play with the best of them. I think you have to have that mindset."

Freeman said he respects the game of the linebackers projected ahead of him, but is confident that he can play at their level.

Freeman appears to be stacking up quite well with the pool of talent. A number of teams have expressed interest. The St. Louis Rams worked him out last Monday and he will have a private workout with the Miami Dolphins next week. Freeman is also scheduled to travel to Dallas to meet with the Cowboys early next month.
I believe teammate James Laurinaitis summed it up best in terms of Freeman's ability when he said "Marcus is athletically gifted and is the total package."

According to one NFL scout, Freeman has solidified himself as one of the premier outside 'backers in this draft and a Day 1 prospect.

Jungle Love

"Being from Huber Heights, the Bengals are the team I rooted for as a kid," Freeman said. "I think we all say to play in the NFL is a blessing, but to play for the Bengals and be close to home would be an exciting experience.

"Even being coached by the team at the Senior Bowl was eye-opening. To have Marvin Lewis as your head coach and having him give you your gear was truly an experience. Things are starting to come full circle. That dream you had as a kid is almost a reality. I would love to play in Cincinnati and I have one out of 32 chances to do that. If it happens, it happens. If not, then I look forward to the game where I can come to Cincinnati and play."

That could be twice a season. Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, who was at Ohio State's pro day, was impressed with Freeman as was Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Mel Tucker.

Great post.

I think Marcus Freeman at 51 is a very real possibility, very real. He's healthy now and rising fast. His short shuttle was 4.06, I think. He ran a 4.51.

I'm glad Dallas is going to have him in. I think he's number 1 on the board at that ILB position. He played OLB at Ohio State, so he can run.

most 4-3 OLBs in college, unless they are great pass-rushers, move inside to ILB in a 3-4

esp. guys who run around blocks and are better sideline-to-sideline, you don't want a guy like Freeman having to battle in the trash, you want him running around making plays against the run and in coverage

You've repeated this a couple times, you are just fooling around right? You know that 4-3 OLBs and 3-4 OLBs involve very different skill sets. 4-3 OLBs (especially the WILL) are better suited to play WILB in a 3-4. I know you know that.

Clemson DT Dorrell Scott said today that he has a visit set-up with Dallas

Yeah, I saw an article where he said that he has already worked out for or is gong to work out for the Cowboys, Dolphins, Giants, and Steelers.

Plus, it said that he was in the 2nd-3rd round range. Bunting was right about Scott. He's a # 51 target, imo. He may be gone by # 69. The Big Tuna is picking right behind Dallas in round 2.

I think it is interesting that the Dolphins like Marcus Freeman, too. It isn't a surprise, though.

You know the Big Tuna would take Scott over Freeman.

If you wanted to let one drop and take a chance at getting him at 69, you would take Scott and hope Freeman falls, imo. However, Freeman is exactly what Dallas needs at ILB. I bet he's at the top of the list. Plus, he would be picked to be the future starter. You never know, you might need him this year.

Also, can you pick a "backup" NT in round 2 if you have no plans to move Jay Ratliff? I have read where Scott could play DE in a 34, too. If that is the case, his value goes up for the Cowboys.

This could be very interesting. I think Dorell Scott is probably at the top of the NT list.

You could have a Scott vs Freeman pick at number 51.

Edit:

Dorell Scott says that 3-4 teams are looking at him exclusively for NT. He has already worked out for the Eagles and Patriots. He has visits planned for the Cowboys, Jets, Steelers, and Dolphins. The other report included the Giants.

Scott says that he expects to be drafted in about the 3rd round.

The Eagles are always sticking their nose into our business, imo.

For the heck of it, going off the list and the average projected round by several websites I'll list the players in this thread and what rounds they may be targeted in.

Again, these projected rounds are the average projections and value boards of several draft web sites. not mine, so don't shoot the messenger.:o:

Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU (Late Rd 1 to Mid Rd 2)
Jarron Gilbert, DE/DT, San Jose St (Rd 3)

Ron Brace, NT, Boston College (Late Rd 2 to Mid Rd 3)

Darry Beckwith, ILB, LSU (Rd 3)

Cody Brown, OLB/DE, Connecticut (Rd 3)
Zack Follett, OLB, California (Mid Rd 4 to Early Rd 5)

Cornelius Lewis, OT/OG, Tennessee St (Mid Rd 6 to UDFA)
Phil Loadholt, OT, Oklahoma (Rd 2)
Jaimie Thomas, OG, Maryland (Late Rd 6 to UDFA)

John Phillips, TE, Virginia (Mid Rd 5 to Mid Rd 6)

Demetrius Byrd, WR, LSU (Rd 3)
Juaquin Iglesia, WR, Oklahoma (Late Rd 1 to Early Rd 2)
Derrick Williams, WR, PSU (Rd 2)
Jarett Dillard, WR, Rice (Late Rd 3 to Early Rd 4)

Rudy Carpenter, QB, Arizona St (Rd 5)
Rhett Bomar, QB, Sam Houston St (Rd 2)
Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech (Rd 3)
Chase Holbrook, QB, New Mexico St (Rd 7 to UDFA)
Nate Davis, QB, Ball State (Rd 2)

This is mock draft 3.0 addition
2 - Ron Brace - BC/NT - 6'3 333lbs. If he is gone - Patrick Chung -ORE/S - 5 11 3/4 210.
3 - Tyrone Mckenzie - S.FL/OLB - 6'1 243lbs - Put him on the inside and he has good cover skills,ie, poss 3rd down option.
3 - I would acquire this pick by trading a 4th and 5th rounder to get another late in the third. With this pick i pick Kevin Ellison - USC/S - 6'2 225 lbs.
4 - Zach Follett -CAL/OLB - 6'2 240lbs, Put him on inside also, manly because he is better in a box then in space, also ST.
5 - Demetrius Byrd - LSU/WR - 6'0 200lbs 4.4 speed
5 - Ray Feing - BYU/OG - 6'4 330.
6 - Khalif Mitchell - E.CAR/DT,DE - 6'5 317 LBS ,He is a project possibly catch lightning in a botle?
6 - Chris Pressley -WIS/FB - 6'1 259lbs. He is a punishing blocker, but not a great pass catcher. Someone who will excell at his role? Not A FAN OF D.ANDERSON.
7 - Thomas Morestead - SMU/P - 6'4 225LBS, With the uncertainty of whether McBRIAR comes back at 100%?
7 - Mike Goodson - T.A&M/RB - 6'0 212, FAST GUY. SPECIAL TEAMS?
I still pick Ellison because if we get Brace then we can have our saftey too. However, if we get Chung we can sure up that position for the future with these two, because it has been a problem position for three years? Mckenzie,Folett gives us what we need, insurance if Brookins doesn't hold up,and Mckenzie takes Burnett's 3rd down job. Byrd is our deep threat,as i am not comfortable going to early for Wr. It is time to see what we have with the young guys here? D.Ander., enough said, Pressley is a punishing blocker. Mitchell or Goodson is a wait and see,not really important, while Morestead is our insurance? What do you think?

NFL Draft: Vaughn on Raiders, Bills Radar

Chip Vaughn (Wake Forest Athletics) By Ed Thompson
Scout.com Senior NFL Analyst
Posted Mar 28, 2009

Scout.com's Ed Thompson has the latest scoop on the Raiders and the Bills interest in Wake Forest safety Chip Vaughn.

Wake Forest safety Chip Vaughn has told Scout.com that he recently completed a visit with the Buffalo Bills and that he has a personal workout scheduled with the Oakland Raiders this week. Vaughn has already worked out for the New England Patriots.

The 6-foot-1, 221-pound defender has legitimate 4.4-second speed and was one of the top performers in the 40-yard dash and 20-yard shuttle at the Combine. He finished the 2007 season as the Deacons' leading tackler, and followed that up his senior year by posting the third-best total on the team with 87 stops. He also logged 2.5 tackles for a loss, picked off a pair of passes and recovered two fumbles during his final season at Wake Forest.

Vaughn shares the credit for his success with the coaches at Wake Forest, who put him in a defense that counts on the safety to make a lot of plays and to be a leader.

"Our system is kind of built around the safety because we do make all the calls and checks in the defense," he explained. "So really, it's the responsibility of the safety to put himself and the team in the best possible situation.

"We played a variety of coverage: Cover-2, Man-Free, Quarters Defense, Tampa-2, Cover-3, a lot of zone-blitz looks. We actually ran a mixture of what the Colts, the Steelers, and the Bears run."

Vaughn previously told Scout.com that at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, the Dallas Cowboys, San Diego Chargers, Houston Texans, Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots and the San Francisco 49ers were just a few of the teams that requested a formal interview with him.

Read more about him through the links on his Scout.com profile page.

Ravens keep eye on Toler

By Aaron Wilson, Times Staff Writer Sunday, March 29, 2009

OWINGS MILLS — The Baltimore Ravens are taking a look at small-school cornerback Greg Toler, an emerging NFL draft sleeper from tiny St. Paul’s College in rural Virginia.

A Washington, D.C., native, Toler is working out for the Ravens on Monday at Woodrow Wilson High. The New York Jets are also scheduled to work out Toler on Monday.

The Division II star had private workouts this past week for the Cleveland Browns and the Miami Dolphins.

Described as this year’s Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, the Arizona Cardinals cornerback drafted in the first round a year ago out of Tennessee State, Toler has designs on being selected somewhere between the second and the fourth round in next month’s NFL draft.

“I’m taking that small-school route and, hopefully, I’ll get the chance to prove that football is football on any level,” Toler said in a telephone interview. “Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie took this route to the NFL, and I’m looking to do the same thing. All I want is a good shot.

“If I had gone to a bigger school, I might have gotten complacent. From where I’m coming from, I treasure this a lot more. I don’t complain about anything, and I just appreciate the opportunity. This is my dream.”

According to NFL.com, Toler has been projected as a mid-round to late-round draft pick.

Toler said he has upcoming visits with the Washington Redskins, Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, Jets, Cardinals, Browns, Green Bay Packers, Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Dallas Cowboys are also scheduled to work out Toler at some point.

“Greg is definitely an exceptional athlete, don’t let the school fool you,” said St Paul’s defensive coordinator and secondary coach Kevin Grisby, who played for the Philadelphia Eagles. “If he had gone to a Division I school, he would have started and been a top draft pick. We were fortunate to have him. He made me sleep good at night.

Font Size: AAA.08.St. Paul’s Toler Is An NFL Sleeper
Posted by Aaron Wilson on March 27, 2009, 1:36 p.m. EDT
St. Paul’s (Va.) cornerback Greg Toler is making his bid to emerge as this year’s Domonique Rodgers-Cromartie, and has been drawing increased interest from NFL teams.

Toler had private workouts this week with the Cleveland Browns and the Miami Dolphins this week.

Toler told us in a telephone interview that he has upcoming visits with the Washington Redskins, Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“I’m hoping to get that chance to prove myself,” Toler said. “Domonique Rodgers-Cromartie took the small-school route, and I’m looking to do the same thing. If I had gone to a bigger school, I might have gotten complacent.

“From where I’m coming from, I treasure this a lot more. I don’t complain about anything, and I just appreciate the opportunity. This is my dream.”

According to NFL.com, Toler has been projected as a mid-round to late-round draft pick. He’s hoping to go as high as the second or third round.

Listed at 5-foot-11, 191 pounds, Toler has run a hand-timed 4.35 in the 40-yard dash. He intercepted 14 career passes at St. Paul’s.

Toler had academic problems coming out of high school in the Washington D.C. area. Now, he’s six credits shy of earning a degree.

“I didn’t take my classes very seriously at that time,” Toler said. “I was working at a JC Penney. I couldn’t see myself doing that for my life, so I was blessed to go to St. Paul’s. I don’t have any regrets. It’s a small, isolated school where you can concentrate on academics and football.

“The strength of my game is that I’m a cover cornerback. I’ll come up and tackle, too. I want to be one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL one day. I grew up watching Champ Bailey and Deion Sanders, and those are my favorite cornerbacks.”

Two players who boosted their stock during Wednesday’s workouts were defensive tackle Roy Miller and defensive end Henry Melton.

The 6-foot-1 Miller, who played at 290 pounds last season, weighed in at 313 for NFL scouts. But he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.8 seconds, faster than the 4.98 and 5.09 times he ran at the combine.

"I’ve gained 23 pounds and ... showed that I can still be athletic at 313 [pounds]. I think that’s pretty good," said Miller, who was downgraded at the combine for a lack of bulk. During the interim, Miller said he’s been working out while ingesting 4,800 calories per day.

A Killeen native, Miller said he has received significant attention from Dallas Cowboys scouts and would welcome the chance to play in his home state.

It just seems if Williams is there, Dallas is right there with him.

If he last till #69 I don't think I would have a problem with that pick.

USC DT Fili Moala told Scout.com that he plans to do a full workout at the school's Pro Day on April 1. The 6-foot-4, 305-pound lineman also said that the Chiefs, Chargers, Steelers, Cardinals, Broncos, Saints, Giants, Cowboys, Browns and Colts were among the teams that he had formal interviews with at the NFL Scouting Combine. So far, he's getting plenty of interest as a DT from teams that run a 4-3 defense and as a DE from teams that primarily use a 3-4 alignment. One of the teams he's already visited is the Buffalo Bills.

Sidbury In Demand
Posted by Aaron Wilson on March 31, 2009, 12:09 p.m.
University of Richmond defensive end/outside linebacker Lawrence Sidbury drew a big NFL crowd to his campus Pro Day workout with 31 NFL teams in attendance, according to Gil Brandt of NFL.com.

That included Carolina Panthers General Manager Marty Hurney as well as the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins’ linebackers coaches as Baltimore Ravens linebackers coach Vic Fangio oversaw the workout drills.

At 6-foot-2, 265 pounds, Sidbury is regarded as a strong pass rushing candidate. He has visited the Buffalo Bills and has schedule visits with the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans and St. Louis Rams.

Sidbury ran the 40-yard dash in 4.57 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine, bench pressing 225 pounds 28 times and turned in a 35-inch vertical leap.

Last season, Sidbury posted 7 1/2 sacks. His workout numbers are superior to his production at this point, but NFL teams are enamored of Sidbury’s potential.

Brinkley, who is considered a good fit in either a three- or four-linebacker scheme, is scheduled to visit the Dallas Cowboys on April 13, and Denver, Detroit, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Miami have requested private workouts. Kansas City and New England also have been in contact.

I think there's a huge chance that we draft Phillps in the 4th..we seem to be really interested in him and he's a Texas boy..he reminds me of Zach Thomas.

sorry but hes got tore up knee

I rather get BLAKE SCHLUETER/OC Some of you are now scrambling to your prospect lists to find SCHLUETER's name. Find it and mark it down, because this guy is slowly, but steadily, climbing up the ladder to draftable. The only knock on him is his weight @ 290 lbs., but everything else about him says he is a strong candidate to anchor an NFL OL for a long time. He strikes me as a younger version of a pretty solid guy, who plays with MR. PEYTON: JEFF SATURDAY.

The Cowboys still think he has potential. He was the #2 overall recruit coming out of high school. if he is there in the 5th, I see no harm bringing him in to compete. Also speed isn't everything. Rice, Owens, Fitzgerald, none of those guys ran fast forties, yet they all should be HOF receivers by the time its all said and done. I'm not saying Turner will be anything like the above mentioned, but speed is not the end all be all of playing the receiver position. You still need to get off the line, run crisp routes, get open, and catch the ball.

First, scouts seem to think that Phillips will recover just fine from his knee injury, or he would have dropped in the draft... second, if you think any 290 pound center can hold up in a Hudson Houck offensive line, well, let's just say that my initial impression of you is that you're not a draft guru... let Blake play for the Broncos, he'd fit right in there...

Hey not to call you out or anything but do you think you could hook up the Zone with those spreadsheets you made over at the Ranch? You really did a good job and more people need to see that.

But.. but.... you're forgetting that he's a perfect fit for Shanahan's offense next year!

Can you just imagine the conspiracy theories we're gonna see all year if Dallas picks up a couple of "smaller" linemen?

Webb drawing more interest

League sources report late Tuesday night that the Cleveland Browns are showing a great deal of interest in Nicholls State cornerback/return specialist Lardarius Webb.
The Colonel All-American defensive back, who is projected to be selected in the third round of the this weekend’s college draft, was visited at his home in Opelika, Ala., by Cleveland Browns defensive back coach Jerome Henderson.

Henderson, who played pro football for eight seasons in the NFL as a defensive back with the New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets, spent most of the day Monday and Tuesday interviewing Webb at his Alabama home.

The Browns currently do not have a selection in the third round of the 2009 NFL draft, but they do have the fourth pick in Round 4, the 104th overall selection. The Browns do have two second round selections in Saturday’s draft, the 36th overall pick and the 50th overall selection.

Reports are that the Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans, Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints along with the Cleveland Browns have shown the most interest in Webb.

Dang, Webb is shooting up the draft boards too. A 3rd now??? First Jason Williams, then Veikune, now Webb.

Next thing you know, Sam Hill will be projected in the 3rd too.

The good thing is that someone has to then slip. :)

And hopefully we'll be there waiting.

Yeah, but these guys are my pet cats!! :p:

You can tell how poor a draft is when the small school risers outnumber the big school risers. Most other drafts Barwin is a project pick, maybe 3rd rounder and Sidbury is a second day steal, not this year. Heck, the best all round ranked safety is from Western Michigan. Who the heck follows the guys at Kalamazoo??? :laugh1:

It really will be interesting how this draft turns out in 2 to 3 years.

And I have to say, if there was a year to have a lot of picks in the later rounds and not in Round 1, this is the year!

I think JJ and the scouts got that right, especially when you hear rumors that a lot of clubs are dying to trade out of the bottom half of Round 1 of this Draft.

yeah you have apoint there, but at same time this is where you go off of your head scouts, if you have a good scouting department, you can get the gems in the 2nd to 5th round. Look at the post i made about the 1986 49ers, they were drafting low in the first round, they traded out of first round, got extra 2nd, 3rd, and 4th and loaded up that way
they got steve wallace, tom rathan fullback, and charles haley and a wr, cant think of this name right now, but he was a good 2nd wr.

so you can get good picks in those rounds, and charles haley was taken in the 4th round, you just have to have a good scouting department and let them do the work and drafting.

That's true.

I'm just saying even without a Round 1 pick, we should be able to get quite a few good players. In fact, we should get much better value this year, IMO, compared to previous years.

But I know what you mean, had we still had a Round 1 pick, we could have parlayed that into a bunch of other picks.

Did a once through: spotted John Phillips and Rudy Carpenter on post #1, Jason Williams on #73, Michael Hamlin on #117, and Mike Mickens was on post #168 (but it looks like a mock draft not a Dallas interest report).
