I get in the mood from time to time for certain sounds of music. Right now I'm on a Joe Cocker, raspy voices, blues kind of mood and I'm searching for some new artists.

Any recommendations out there?

This may be softer than what you're looking for, but it's has the raspy quality.

If that is too mushy, this may be a better fit.

I'm not sure if you wanted Blues singers with raspy voices or just raspy voiced singers...

Although he is classified more as a Jazz musician, i've always enjoyed Louis Armstrong's voice, talk about raspy.

For female raspy voices, again maybe not technically blues, Bessie Smith, Janis Joplin and Macie Gray are always good.

Mazy Star
Billy Joel
Bruce Springsteen
Hank Williams Jr (I used to go hunting to his music when I was a kid, so I have a soft spot for him!)
Chris Cornell (his solo works are somewhat along the genre of what you were looking for)
B.B. King

Okay, I'm about tapped out!

You might also want to check out Pandora Radio (if you don't know about it alreay)

http://www.pandora.com/

You can create an account (free) and then you can create your own radio stations by clicking on the tab-Create a new station. Start by putting in the name of the artist or song you feel like listening to. It will start collating other artists who are similar to the one you picked. After that you give each song either a thumbs up or down and it will continue adjusting the collection to your own preferences.

For example, start by typing Sam Cooke and go from there.

Hope that helps.

As i think of more Blues singers with raspy voices i will keep posting them here.

If anyone could find a song by Bob Dylan titled "Tweeter and the Monkey Man", now that is a raspy song and the lyrics are twisted! It's so cool...

Also, as someone suggested Janis Joplin - "Peace of My Heart"...classic.

And, anything by Joe Cocker...

But, if anyone could find me a video of "Tweeter and the Monkey Man" I would be amazed! I got the song, but not a video...

Don't really have any raspy-voiced suggestions, but here are 5 songs that brightened my mood today:

Prince - Purple Rain (for some reason I've been listening to this religiously lately)

George Harrison - Let It Down (acoustic version - bonus track on All Things Must Pass - pretty raspy voice actually...)

R.E.M. - Flowers of Guatemala (R.E.M. at the height of their powers. Simple music done beautifully)

Beck - E-Pro (not much to say, but it's a pretty kick-a** song)

Joni Mitchell - Amelia (for some reason I envision flying through a Grand Canyon-like space when listening to this.)

The album that that song is on is totally flipped!

She was only famous for awhile, but she has heart and soul in her music...her lyrics are real. And for me, lyrics are what make the song, not the melody.

Just put all the good stuff in the CD player and hit "random" and let the thing do it's job. Take a journey...the happy and sad.

Turn it down...keep those ears safe.

While i prefer good lyrics and there are a lot of songs i like because of it, generally speaking, i must say i am the opposite. I say this because i listen to a lot of music from all over the world and i have no idea what they are saying. If the melody moves me, if i can groove to it, dance to it, or the music creates a certain type of mood inside me, that is all i need.
