We can't even watch a stupid TV show without this garbage being pushed down our throats.
First Lil Rounds last night cheerfully claimed "Obama Number 1".
Then tonight Stevie Wonder has to slip in, in the middle of one of his songs, "I love you Barack Obama!"
What is Stevie That you love? That he is going to bankrupt our children and our grandchildren? Or maybe the fact that he is going to socialize the medical industry? Or maybe you just love the way he rapidly selling America to the Chinese. Could that be it?
Please tell us Stevie, what exactly do you love?
Can't these people just shut up and sing???
Stupid freakin' people. :bang2:

I watched his Town meeting tonight. He really is gifted in how he relates to an audiance. I mean, all the questions were loaded so he got nothing difficult or anything that would reflect anything that was not Left but still and all, he does have a gift.
Unfortunate that people seldom listen and think about what is being said as opposed to just glazing on the surface stuff.

I couldn't agree more.. What is it with these hardheaded people who still support what this moron is doing?:bang2: Thanks to President Obama we will be able to witness the fall of a world super power (USA).... And the rise of a new world super power (China).
China is pouring more and more money into their military, while we want to do the complete opposite and take money away. Obama is too busy ****ing destroying our economy to worry about our foreign policies anyway. Obama will go hands down as the worst President in American History. He will be known as the one that allowed let the Great Empire of the United States collapse into a third world socialist nation.
Ohh and for all of you who voted for Obama. Thanks to you... Us the young Americans 18-35 our children and our childrens children will be calling someone from China "Boss". People have no idea what this man is doing right now. He talks to the American people like we are idiots. BUt then again we did vote him into office........hmmm. Maybe we are doomed. :(

Alarmist conservatives continue to race about the room with their hair on fire, screaming "Obama will socialize healthcare!" ... even when most indications are that the President's enthusiasm for it has been dampened and that we will not be moving to a single-payer system anytime soon - despite a majority of Americans seeming to be in favor of such a move.
From a March 5th CNN poll:
Seventy-two percent of those questioned in recent CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey say they favor increasing the federal government's influence over the country's health care system in an attempt to lower costs and provide health care coverage to more Americans, with 27 percent opposing such a move. Other recent polls show six in 10 think the government should provide health insurance or take responsibility for providing health care to all Americans.
One would have to be pretty dense not see the huge problems with our current healthcare system... principally, the bloated tick on it's neck - the health insurance industry.
We now return you to your regularly-scheduled irrational rant.

72% can say they are in favor of it but those 72% are casting votes based on an idea as opposed to factual information. Go ask England and see if 72% of those people like it.

Oh the drama.
If you have not noticed, our economy was destroyed before Obama took office and Bush has already established his place as the worst US President in history. It would be extremely hard for anyone to knock him out of that prestigious spot he put himself in.
And yes, I voted for Obama, as did the majority of this nation. Have we already forgotten how Bush has destroyed the reputation and respect our country had?
Give it time.....too many people expecting too much, too soon.

72% can say they are in favor of it but those 72% are casting votes based on an idea as opposed to factual information. Go ask England and see if 72% of those people like it.
If the results come back in the affirmative, then I would say that perhaps there is significance to those numbers.
Just for starters - NOT ONE CITIZEN goes without healthcare in the UK. Here, roughly on-in-five WORKERS is uninsured - and that's just among the employed.
And while roughly 15% of those in the UK would like to see their healthcare system COMPLETELY revamped - MOST Americans feel similarly.
Highest per capita healthcare spending IN THE WORLD - yet 47 million are uninsured. Overall outcomes lagging well behind those of other developed countries. And costs projected to double over the next seven years.
A major overhaul just seem so inevitable - why not get started now?

It's hard to figure exactly how many, but when that number is thrown out it isn't taking into consideration many things...
This may help a bit...
It’s become a mantra that there are “47 million uninsured” Americans, a figure people use to back compulsory “universal” health insurance (http://www.patientpowernow.org/2008/03/25/universal-health-care-kills/) of some kind. Google found (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=52o&q=%2247+million+uninsured%22+site%3Adenverpost.com&btnG=Search) about fifty pages with the phrase on the Denver Post mentioned (http://www.jaredpolis.com/pdf/20060305_DailyCamera.pdf) 45 million, while Democrat Will Shafroth 50 million (http://www.dailycamera.com/news/2008/jul/12/dark-horse-no-longer/). Sure, 47 million sounds significant, until you look at the details behind the numbers.
The website alone. Democrat Jared Polis has Investor’s Business Daily reports (http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=273280379232127):The median household income, according to the data released this week, is $48,200. You might be surprised to discover that 38% of all the uninsured — that’s almost 18 million people — have incomes higher than $50,000 a year. An astounding 20% of all uninsured have incomes over $75,000. These are people who can afford coverage.
Is it really a good idea to tax working people to subsidize those who refuse to pay for a necessity they could easily buy? The answer, of course, is no.
The Census Bureau reports (http://www.census.gov/prod/2003pubs/p60-223.pdf) that “Spells without health insurance, measured on a monthly basis, tend to be short in duration — about three-quarters (74.7 percent) were over within 1 year.” The same study reports that 44% of spells without insurance lasted less than four months.
Further, HealthCareBS (http://www.healthcarebs.com/2007/09/20/uninsured-increase-some-actual-facts/) pulls some choice observations from the Jeff Goldsmith at the Health Affairs blog (http://healthaffairs.org/blog/2007/09/13/the-uninsured-47-million-hostages-our-dysfunctional-health-policy-process/):Almost the entire increase in people without health insurance from 2005 to 2006 took place in families with incomes above $50,000.Two-thirds of the 2005-2006 increase was actually in families with incomes above $75,000!
The number of uninsured people in families whose incomes were below $25,000 actually declined by about 4%.
Now consider this question by economist Arnold Kling:Question: How many American families have proper health insurance?
a) over 90 percent.
b) between 80 and 90 percent.
c) between 10 and 80 percent.
d) less than 10 percent.
Given that about 15 percent of American families do not have health insurance, the correct answer would appear to be (b). However, in my opinion, the correct answer is (d).
To understand his position, read his article here (http://www.cato-unbound.org/2007/01/08/arnold-kling/insulation-vs-insurance/).
Lacking insurance is nothing to trivialize. But the number of insured is not the problem itself, but the symptom of the main problem, government meddling in insurance and health care markets.

I was reading an article saying many come to the US for medical treatment including a young girl from New Zealand who is in need of a life saving transplant. Is that not offered in her home country where the parents said the only way their daughter could live is by coming to the US? I agree I think we need to do things to help reduce medical cost but we also need to be careful of putting so much on cost that we see a decrease in medical advancements and life saving treatments. I see no one talking about tort reform to help doctors lower their cost with malpractice insurance they are forced to carry. It's a wonder Cajun has any credibility in this political zone. I love his act, though. Highly entertaining.
Actually Cajun is highly thought of on this forum.
He has an obvious mad-on for Obama ..... but he admits that.
Brain and Cajun go at each other like this all the time ..... they enjoy it.
I will say that Cajun is one of the most caring people I have met on this forum.
He is just an opinionated person, just like the rest of us, sometimes ..... :)

The problem is, and I think it's been pretty well proven, is that under a Universal Health Care System, you get neither.
As one who has Universal Coverage, I'll be the first to say it's not perfect, but at least it's there. I don't know if it's possible to have that kind of coverage in the U.S., due to the nature of the State vs Federal governments, and due the nature of the Health Care industry in the U.S, but wouldn't it make sense to ensure that coverage was available to all?

I am very much against Universal Health care because I don't believe we can afford this kind of change at this point in time. I am not certain how many people can be covered by this kind of model here in the US. I mean, the tax burden is already carried by a relatively small number of people. To place the responsability of this kind of coverage on them would, IMO, break there collective backs.
Aside from that, I don't love the kind of care you receive. I know that the first time my Mom or my Dad, my Wife or one of my kids doesn't get the kind of care I want them to, there will be problems.

LOL at Iraq and Afghanistan having universal health care funded by our war effort.
If I was American and wanted universal health care, I'd be pissed as hell.
If I could actually trust the gov't to:
1. provide health care for all
2. make it less expensive than the current system
3. IMPROVE the quality of health care currently
Then I'd probably support it.
But seeing as how that's not going to happen.... its kind of hard to support it. Not to mention... its giving Democrats and Republicans more power, more money to spend, and in general, both sides do a lousy job.

I agree with your assertion that the census bureau data isn't the end-all-be-all, but it's "close enough for government work". And if your saying every household lumped into those income groups can necessarily afford insurance - you take too much for granted. These are "households" - which tend to be more loosely defined than an "insurance purchasing unit". If you are 24 and live with your cousin and his girlfriend, and between the three you average $25K income apiece - you're considered a $75K household. But since neither of you is immediately related - you're also three separate insurance purchasing units. Unless you have employee insurance - it's "ouch" for you! And that may be the key here. Because, beyond that - it's the canary in the coal mine.
People, who aren't independently wealthy, don't want health insurance the way I don't want a Ferrari. When a $75-100K family can't afford insurance because they've got a kid or two in college, plus the mortgage, and their non-group rated premium is $1000/mo - it starts to hit home. Or if they opt not to carry the pricey policy any longer because the non-group insurers continue to stiff them with high copays or coverage denials to the point it actually becomes a semi-rational bet to go "naked".
Either way - they ARE uninsured and the number of 47MM prevails all over the place as the officially cited number. And has been estimated to rise 1.1MM for every additional 1% unemployment.
So the problem here is "government meddling"? Nothing to do with the skyrocketing costs, a p***-poorly managed private system, and the gouging, greedy, and merciless stiffs who run the healthcare insurance industry?
Well you're certainly true to your libertarian self. Or what ever the heck you were calling your political bent... :D

You might be surprised at the level of care my family receives. As for the cost, that debate happens in any medical care system. As noted earlier, there is discussion on what treatments are available in what system. I haven't had difficulty in accessing what I need, and I can access a cardiologist or other specialist without difficulty. There is a cost in terms of public expense, and there's potential for abuse, but there are safeguards. As I mentioned earlier, it's more difficult to see how this would work in the U.S, but I would hope that some kind of compromise could happen so that people would not have to go bankrupt if they get sick.

Hey, as long as it doesn't touch you it's not a problem, right?
Bet here. If the gov't were to take a "two-siloed" approach to healthcare and make single-payer universal coverage an option for all Americans - in five years most (if not all) private healthcare insurers will be out of business. It's extremely unlikely that they can compete with a single-payer system on an efficiency basis when it comes to cost and delivery of care. Americans will migrate over to the universal silo in droves.
For those less self-absorbed, don't wait on Obama for this change, it'll be watered down to uselessness - back HR 676.

Health care can be affordable. However, on a personal level, I've had the pleasure of not being able to get a policy because according to a chart, my weight was not considered proportional to my height. So yep, I absolutely could afford it, but I couldn't get a policy. So I was an employed, able-bodied, person with no major pre-conditions and was denied an individual policy.
Fortunately, I never suffered any major health issue while I was uninsured. Whenever I had a problem, I just went to my primary like normal and paid the entire doctor bill. And because my doctors knew me, they gave me a break on my doctor's visits.
So while you're correct that people can afford it if they wanted to, those same people can be denied. Insurance companies can suck sometimes.

Health. I applied at a couple places and was denied both times. Ironic part is the two companies where I applied, I had already been covered under my prior employer-sponsored coverage. I'm currently covered under one of the insurers now under my employer-sponsored plan. Funny how that works.
I wasn't denied a life insurance policy, but I did get a different type of policy, because I do have a minor condition related to my vision.

That is really strange. I have had employees that I had to let go who could not get life insurance because of their Height/weight issues but never health insurance. As a matter of fact, at one point i was turned down for Life Insurance because of that but the idiot doctor put my height at 5'1 and my weight at 240 instead of 6'0". (Dope)
But I had never seen someone turned down based on height/weight. Also I know pre-existing conditions also play a role in it but still.

It could have been a mistake by your doctor if they asked for a physical prior to your application. If this happened twice, it sounds like an error on your Dr.s end. Again, I could be wrong but it is really odd.
I know it's not pressing now because you have insurance but, I would ask your Dr. to see your files and look at the vitals like your Ht/Wt reference and your BP and Cholesterol levels. I mean it only takes a dr. forgetting to put a decimal point in the right place to mess things up.

It never got to the point where I was asked for a physical.
It was simply a matter of applying online. Based on the info I provided, I was denied...and that info was given to me as a reason. I called the insurers directly and the reps just reiterated that reason.

The incident with my brother is from last year, WG. It is not an unusual occurance and actually typical for those self employed or the employed who're part of a small group "pool".
It helps to think of healthcare insurers as gamblers. And also that height/weight ratios are tabled - 6' 0" and 250lbs "looks" the same to them whether you are flabby or extremely muscular. And complications arising from obesity are well known to insurers - regardless of an individual's having a health history of low incidence (and I'm certainly not suggesting that's you, either - just pointing out that insurance providers take a very two-dimensional approach to risk). They have to project down the line.
Insurers make many coverage and rate decisions based on the pool-size of the insured. In a large pool, the more healthy will generally offset the losses incurred by covering the less healthy. So, typically, the larger the pool - the lower the rates and the more liberal the coverage.
But in smaller pools or on an individual basis - less to no offsetting factors are present.
When you move into smaller pools the insurers become much more conservative in their approach. The costs of insuring the riskier "bets" are more directly absorbed. so weight considerations are more inclined to become a barrier to coverage.
Let me reiterate that I don't believe insurers are evil or anything approaching that. The nature of their business model makes it necessary for them to refuse coverage, bump copayments, and deductibles to maintain profitability. And nobody is in business to give away money.
But that concept is at the very root of our healthcare problems. As a nation, we should halt the approach to healthcare as a "for profit" bizop - and make healthcare for ALL Americans a top priority.
