Jameson.

Distant seconds would be Jack Daniels or Cuervo. Stoli makes a decent vodka, but I rarely drink vodka anymore.

agreed about stoli...I dont like cuervo much other than a marguarita mixer for my wife, Jack is decent tho...single barrel is real good but a little too pricey

Maybe you should put the bottle down and get some sleep :beer1:.

As for me, I don't drink but I mixed drinks for friends in college. Bacardi was always the liquor of choice.

Scotch is traditionally served "neat". Sometimes with ice or water.

Shots of scotch is like "shotgunning" Guiness.

Back when I drank, Everclear was my stand by. Mix it correctly with Sprite and you would never know you are drinking grain alcohol. Liked Jim Beam when I wanted something a little bit sweeter. If you're doing shots however, it's hard to beat Absolute Citron.

It actually is a different language -- Gaelic for "Straight of Islay." The distillery is on the Scottish island called Islay, which is a region that makes a very distinct flavor of Scotch (very peaty compared to other regions).

Apparently it's one of the biggest ingredients in Johnnie Walker scotches (which are just blends of other scotches). That's funny, because I don't like Johnnie Walker scotches because I don't think blends are worth a ****.

Johnnie Walker is a blend of other Scotches? Meaning a mix of other brands?Yes, that's absolutely correct. People think Johnnie Walker is top shelf Scotch, but any blend is by definition subpar. They blend in order to obtain a consistent flavor (i.e., single malts can change over the years, just like a wine from different vintages will change). But when you blend, you're necessarily obtaining a more generic flavor that is less distinct and less flavorful. I don't drink blends, unless I'm at a bar and am drinking solely to get drunk (in which case I'll add ice to my Scotch -- otherwise, you drink it neat or not at all).

I think that Scotch is one of those things that you really have to build a palette for, like good wine. It's easier to enjoy something like Walker Black when you first start drinking Scotch than it is to appreciate even something mid-range like Oban.

would have to disagree with all blends being subpar by definition. while that has traditionaly been the case with whisky like bells or grouse some of the modern blends are really top class and not necessarily worse than a single malt.

Hell, I think Dewars tastes better than many single malts. But I'd never put Dewars as a top shelf Scotch just because I like its taste.

I've attended several tastings where the folks from the distilleries running the tastings insisted that the bouquet of the liquor opens up with the addition of a splash of water. Not a ton of water but neat isn't necessarily the consensus on the best way to go. Depends of course what you are drinking -- a blend likely already has been watered to get it to exactly 80 proof.

Even single malts have been watered when they're bottled. Cask strength Scotches are straight from the cask and certainly do need water added.

I like white liquor... Grew up drinking dark liquor, so I can tolerate it. But now I tend to favor gins, rums, vodka, etc... I'm not very brand specific.

I have a bottle of Ciroc I haven't tried yet.

Grey Goose is a bit overrated, but it's nice.

As far as tequila, of course Patron, but the kind I really like is Antigua Cruz. Waaay better than Patron, but it's even more expensive than Patron, so I mooch off my friend's bottle when I go to their house.

I like Malibu Rum the most, but I'm not a snob.

I had the 25 y/o when I was at a steak and chop house in Schaumburg. One of the execs from Boston bought a round of shots @ 80 a pop. He is the type of guy with no kids so he can do that. I was so tore from earlier on in the night to even make the connection. The guy manning the bar(Owner) was giving us samplers of different scotchs and bourbons. I did notice that it went down without any whiskey face. No ice or water added either. I was told that the bottle went for 500. I'm not at that point yet where I can buy a bottle for 500.

I've heard this is from tastings led by reps from the distillery -- not saying it is the "right" way or not, only that expert opinions differ on the issue.

I would say it was 8 or 12 oz tumblers(I dunno the name of the glass used, it wasn't a shot glass) that were a little over a 1/4 full.

A lot of the experience came when the owner gave us samples of the top shelf stuff that came from Scotland, Ireland and The States. I used to be more of a tequila drinker, but this stuff had hints of scents and flavors in the same manner that a good Bordeaux does. AS far as punch. I don't know cause I was already pretty jacked.

And most of the people that I work with from the East Coast are show offs.
